A VIGIL WAS HELD FOR MICHIGAN SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF
Members of the deaf community say they feel they are shut out on plans to renovate the Michigan School for the Deaf campus in Flint and are calling for the governor to hold off on signing the bill until she hears from them first. Students, staff and supporters of those from MSD held a quiet candlelight vigil Tuesday night to send that message to Lansing. The state legislature recently approved a bill that allows a Genesee county developer to buy the school. Lurvey White Ventures will buy the property for more than $1 million. / abc12

SEATTLE POLICE RELEASE VIDEO OF POLICE KILLING OF DEAF NATIVE AMERICAN
Seattle Police have released footage of the killing of a deaf Native American woodcarver who was carrying a knife. Officer Ian Burk killed Native American woodcarver, John T. Williams who was carrying a small knife used for woodcarving. While officer Burk did ask Williams to drop his knife, Williams was deaf in one ear according to his family. While the actual killing does not occur on tape, you can hear the shots and confrontaion of the incident through the dashboard camera. / News One

FIRE DESTROYS CARLYSS HOME
It was very early Monday morning and within days of Christmas that a devastating fire destroyed the Carlyss home of Gaye Cormier and her three children. No injuries were reported. According to David Currie, Gaye's father, her 12 year-old daughter Megan heard the fire and woke up her mother, who is deaf, her sister Molly, 11, and her brother Matt, 5. Their dog managed to hide next to the bathtub and survive the fire. / Sulphur Daily News

WOMAN, TWO CHILDREN FLEE FIRE AT DES MOINES HOME
A fire forced a deaf woman and her two children out of their Des Moines home early Wednesday morning. The mother, whose name was not made public, woke up to the smell of smoke shortly after 12:20 a.m. at the family’s 1620 Allison St. home. A 10-year-old called 911, and the family escaped the home without injury. Damage to the home was estimated at $35,000. / The Des Moines Register

FOR DEAF JEWS, JEWISH COMMUNITY ONLY SLOWLY OPENING UP
Alexis Kashar was listening intently to the speaker at a recent Jewish federation event in this New York City suburb. A closer look revealed that her eyes were trained not on the podium but on Naomi Brunnlehrman, who was seated in front of the speaker translating the lecture into American Sign Language. Kashar, 43, a longtime civil rights lawyer, has been deaf since birth. / JTA

BORN-DEAF DUNBAR SECOND-GRADER WINS UIL PRIZE FOR STORYTELLING
To win a medal in a University Interscholastic League (UIL) academic competition is viewed as an accomplishment for any second-grader. For Kade Carr, 7, his fourth-place medal in storytelling is a testament to years of speech and auditory therapy for the boy who was born profoundly deaf. / The Lufkin Daily News

A DEAF-AND-DUMB DETAINED BY MINSK POLICE FOR SHOUTING ANTI-GOVERNMENT SLOGANS
Belarusian police detained a deaf-and-dumb man, allegedly shouting anti-government slogans during a crackdown of the opposition rally in Minsk after the presidential elections. Tuesday, December 21, the Central district court of Minsk heard the case of Antonov S., who, according to the police report, had participated in an unsanctioned rally and shouted anti-government slogans. The defendant could not answer the judge's questions, as he turned out to be deaf and dumb. / Telegraf

DEAF WORKER CATALYZES MISSIONS EFFORTS IN PRAGUE
Never underestimate the difference one person can make. Mark and Vesta Sauter came to the Czech Republic to start churches among the nation’s 50,000 Deaf. But the missionaries weren’t seeing a lot of interest until God brought them an unlikely volunteer -- 90-year-old Lillian Beard. Lillian was a pioneer for Deaf work among Southern Baptists and a life-long mentor to Vesta. The women shared a common bond; as hearing children of Deaf parents, both learned sign as their first language. / Florida Baptist Witness

DEAF WOMAN WRESTLER TO DEBUT IN TOKYO
Yakami Aoi is an active Deaf professional woman wrestler belonging to Toromon Japan, a Deaf professional wrestler group. It was recently learned that she is debuting to the Deaf wrestling match scheduled for December 23 at Korakuen in Tokyo. Command Bolshoi, a popular hearing wrestler of JWP (Japan Wrestling Produce), came to know about her and asked about fighting together in the ring. Yakami accepted the offer and will challenge the match for the first time as a Deaf woman wrestler this time. / Deaf Japan News

Deaf Way Foundation near Khanna offers six-month free course in computer software, besides English and personality classes. The 6-month free course enrolled 20 deaf students who had come from various parts of the state. Unlike the majority of deaf people, David Bellamy has no trouble pinpointing the moment when he began to lose his hearing. Not for him the gradual deterioration brought on by age. As befits the larger-than-life TV personality that entranced generations of science-mad children, he went deaf with a bang. ATTACKER JAILED FOR KNOCKING DEAF MAN OUT
Punching a deaf man unconscious has landed a 20-year-old in jail. Ambrose Frost has been jailed for 13 months after knocking out his victim with a punch to the head. Frost admitted assault causing grievous bodily harm. Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court heard victim Chris Moran suffered a fractured skull and bruising to the brain following the attack, which took place on June 27, the day England were knocked out of the World Cup by Germany. / Stoke & Staffordshire

CLASSMATES GIVE SIGN OF SUPPORT FOR DEAF BOY AT CAROL CONCERT
Young Luke Champney was born profoundly deaf -- but it certainly hasn't got in the way of enjoying Christmas carols this year. Staff and pupils at Wimborne Juniors have gone the extra mile to set up a special 35-strong choir where youngsters sign along to recorded music. And this year's unorthodox carol service for parents was such a hit, the school arranged a second performance for hundreds of pupils to enjoy and sign along to. / Portsmouth Today

Henry Blair-Allwright’s family believes in Christmas miracles. Henry is a deaf tabby with only three legs who went missing 150 days ago. DEAF COME TOGETHER AT HOLIDAY CELEBRATION
A seasonal celebration was held Saturday for families who receive services through Tri-County GLAD, a nonprofit agency serving the deaf and hard-of-hearing community. The organization’s 21st annual holiday celebration was held at the Elks Lodge in Oxnard and featured a signing Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus, who handed out gifts of books to the children. “We want to provide a great spirit for everybody and give parents the opportunity to mingle with other parents and share their experiences, and the children can identify when they see other deaf children,” said Tri-County GLAD Director Julianna Fjeld. / Ventura County Star

'SIGNING SANTA' BRINGS HOLIDAY TO DEAF CHILDREN
Joshua Kittrell, 10, turned the corner into a room at Norton Elementary School, and his eyes went wide. "Santa!" he signed to one of his teachers. He waited patiently for his turn to receive his present -- the largest box on the table. He tore through it to find a Hot Wheels race course set -- exactly what he wanted. It is moments like those that have kept Ed Mills, who is deaf, coming back to sign for the children, although age and illness have slowed him down. / Herald-Tribune

A FAMILY'S JOURNEY TO BRING THEIR CHILD SUCCESS
Courtland Collins was born profoundly deaf in January of 2009. In December 2009, he received a device called a Cochlear Ear Implant. Courtland's mother Kendra Collins said after her son received the implant at first it was an adjustment. NAD CALLS OUT NETFLIX ON 'DEAF TAX'
The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) sent a follow-up letter to Netflix last Friday requesting that they do the following: caption all of their Watch Instantly videos; in the interim, provide an easy way to search for videos that are captioned; and address concerns about Netflix's plan to charge increased fees for access to DVDs which are generally captioned while Watch Instantly videos are largely uncaptioned. The NAD urges consumer advocates to contact Netflix to demand that they caption all of their videos. / NAD

These girls were forced to be leaders early, and then started looking towards some lofty goals. Trey Gordon has been playing basketball since he was 3 years old. Now a senior at Alabama School for the Deaf, Gordon’s years of practice are paying off in big ways. The Silent Warriors are undefeated, ranked eighth in Class 1A and won the Hackney Classic. In addition to team triumphs, Gordon surpassed an individual milestone as well this season. The 6-4 senior has scored more than 1,000 points in his varsity career at ASD, a goal he reached in the third quarter against Atlanta Area School for the Deaf earlier this month. / The Daily Home

Harriet M. Williams, 91, a retired teacher and administrator at schools for deaf and hearing-impaired students in Philadelphia's public and private schools, died of a stroke Thursday, Dec. 9, at Brittany Pointe Estates, Lansdale. Mrs. Williams, whose maiden name was MacKay, had lived at the retirement community since 1998. Summary: The National Account Manager will be responsible for introducing CSDVRS to new business customers, while also strengthening CSDVRS' relationship with current business customers. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
* Plans and directs sales and service programs to promote new markets, improve competitive position in area, and provide fast and efficient customer service.
* Primary POC for Business users in assigned region.
* Prospect assigned region for new customers.
* Suggesting and implementing creative and practical methods for selling CSDVRS, strengthening client relationships, and increasing visibility.
* Coordinating aspects of CSDVRS marketing efforts.
* Work with other Regional Account Managers to plan and implement state and region-wide events and promotions.
* Coordinate referrals of installations of CSDVRS equipment in homes, agencies, and/or businesses through our installation program; Confers with potential customer to ascertain equipment, supplies, and service needs.
* Work closely with local interpreting agencies.
* Communicate with and submit regular activity reports to the General Manager of BVS.
* Perform additional sales related responsibilities and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
* Must have strong knowledge of Telecommunications Relay Service Industry.
* Must have excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work successfully with a variety of people.
* Must have the ability to communicate fluently in American Sign Language
* Must have a good understanding of Deaf Culture.
* Must have strong written and verbal communication skills.
* Must have extensive customer service experience.
* Must be willing to work a variety of hours and to travel frequently.
* Must have knowledge of Video applications.

Requirements:

Education and/or Experience:
* 1-2 years of sales experience preferred.
* Bachelor's Degree in related field strongly preferred.
* Computer knowledge and Microsoft office

This position directs and supervises all aspects of Client Support Services (CSS) offices as well as specialized programs. Represents the agency in educational and advocacy contexts; coordinates program development and evaluation, and monitors department budget. This position reports to the Executive Director.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
-- Coordinate and implement staffing and programs in the San Leandro, Fremont, San Jose, and Fremont Oak Gardens (FOG) Client Support Services offices
-- Provide training and supervision to all Client Support Specialists, Program Developer, and contractors (for ASL classes and computer classes)
-- Develop linkages and working relationships with other agencies serving the deaf and hard of hearing community
-- Implement grant research and grant writing priorities to sustain the programs within the agency
-- Oversee the compliance of contracts that fund programs within the agency
-- Conduct evaluations of programs to ensure that services are meeting the current needs in the community
-- Monitor department budget
-- Facilitate regularly scheduled department meetings
-- Participate in management team meetings to support department as well as agency operations
-- Represent DCARA and/or the deaf and hard of hearing community at meetings and community events
-- Other responsibilities as assigned by the Executive Director.

REQUIRED SKILLS:
-- Bachelor’s degree in counseling, social services, deafness, or related areas. MA degree preferred.
-- Experience in supervision and management
-- At least two years experience in program service delivery
-- Demonstrated organizational, analytical, and writing skills
-- Demonstrated ability to work well with others and to initiate projects independently
-- Knowledge of MS windows software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
-- Proficiency in American Sign Language and English
-- Positive cultural perspective of Deaf people
-- Able to travel during the week (and occasional weeknights/ weekends) and throughout the DCARA service area

Director of Employment Services (Full Time)

DCARA has a full-time job opening for the position of Director of Employment Services. This position has two major responsibilities: 1. Manage the Employment Services Department which is charged with the task of working with Deaf and hard of hearing residents of the San Francisco Bay Area to enhance their vocational skills, increase their employability, place them in jobs, and work with them to retain their employment; and 2. Develop and implement the Deaf Employment Training Center, a pre-employment skills training and development program for Deaf and hard of hearing individuals. This position will report to the Executive Director and will occupy an office at the Fremont EDD office (primarily) and at DCARA Headquarters in San Leandro.
