INCOMING GALLAUDET PRESIDENT HURWITZ KEEPING MANY ROOTS IN ROCHESTER
Alan Hurwitz heads for Washington, D.C., next month to become president of Gallaudet
University -- the world's leading liberal arts institution for the deaf. But
he realizes that much of his future life will remain anchored in Rochester.
After 39 years, he's not willing to pull up roots. He and his wife, Vicki, will
keep their Pittsford home when they move into House One -- the elegant president's
mansion on Gallaudet's campus. "Rochester is far and away the most deaf-friendly
town I've ever been to," said Hurwitz. "We intend to retire here."

HO HO HO, 'DEAF SANTA' SIGNS TO KIDS
Some 112 public school children who are deaf or hard of hearing got to tell
"Deaf Santa" what they want for Christmas at a holiday celebration
last Thursday at Pearlridge Center. But absent from the crowd were about 20
of their Neighbor Island buddies, whose school districts couldn't afford the
flights to O'ahu this year. To accommodate children who couldn't come, organizers
tried to link up Santa to Neighbor Island classrooms by video conference. Only

Mitchel Watterson, 10, is a proud big brother to his sister, Bridget, who is
deaf. Bridget is 8; her progressive hearing loss was identified by the time
she was 1. Mitchel recently spoke to his mother, Debbie, about his relationship

of a benefit: "On one hand, you get to meet so many other hearing-impaired
people that you would have never known if your sister wasn't deaf. "But
people make fun of her in school, and she'll come home, and she's all upset
about it." / NPR

DEAF-DUMB CHILD LABORER GETS BEATING FOR EVERY MISTAKE HE MAKES
A momentary lapse of concentration, and there is no getting away with it. But
at the age of seven it's not so easy for Ibrahim to maintain concentration for
12 hours since daybreak every day. The work seems never-ending to him like the
coils of rope he produces every day at a rope factory. Perhaps, he got his mind
off the work for a moment recalling once again that he cannot communicate with
anyone like the other kids as he was born deaf and dumb. With full force his
master's muscled hand would land on his face several times, leaving a little
Ibrahim, who works at Tk 60 ($1.21 US) per day, trembling and tossing with fear.

WEB ACCESSIBILITY NO LONGER AN AFTERTHOUGHT
Yahoo's Victor Tsaran knows how much time Web designers spend agonizing over
color and font-width choices when laying out an application. So when he started
Yahoo's accessibility push two years ago, he had a tough time arousing sympathy
for engineers grousing about how much extra time was needed to create accessibility
features. Fortunately for Tsaran, Yahoo's accessibility manager, he's running
into that problem less and less. Web designers are starting to take accessibility
seriously, improving the Web experience not only for people like Tsaran -- who
lost his sight at the age of five -- but for Web users in general. / CNET

GROUP BRIDGES A GAP FOR DEAF THEATERGOERS
Seattle's Rhonda Cochran inherited her mother's love for theater, even though
-- being deaf -- she couldn't hear the performances they went to see. As an
adult, her interest was rekindled when she attended a performance of "Fame"
at The Paramount Theatre, which was interpreted in American Sign Language. That
led her to believe most shows were. But under the Americans with Disabilities
Act, theaters are required only to provide "reasonable" access for
such events, and the 34-year-old Cochran has found her theater options generally
limited. / Seattle
