New York, NY
LAWSUIT IN FEDERAL COURT TO PROTECT THE RIGHTS OF NYPD OFFICERS WITH HEARING IMPAIRMENTS
Disability Rights Advocates is challenging a Department-wide policy that discriminates against NYPD officers who use hearing aids, regardless of how well they do their jobs. The plaintiffs both suffered hearing loss in the line of duty and have exemplary records in their service to the citizens of New York City both before and after their injuries. However, the Department has chosen to end their careers as police officers based on a discriminatory, blanket policy that prohibits employment of any officers who use hearing aids. / Disability Rights Advocates

Brattleboro, VT
SIGN LANGUAGE SERVICE RETURNS
Even though Nancy Groff knew the Vermont Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing was facing tough financial realities she was still surprised about the center's abrupt closing in September. Groff worked for the VCDHH Interpreter Referral Service, and she was told on Sept. 9 that the center was going to close its doors at the end of the week. After a few weeks when there was little she could do but leave a message on her answering machine instructing people to find an interpreter on their own, The Vermont Interpreter Referral Service is back in business. / Brattleboro Reformer

Morganton, NC

INJURED NORWEGIAN CYCLIST HOME AFTER NY MARATHON
It was Aug. 22 when Harald Vik left a Sioux Falls motel on the second day of a planned trip by tandem bicycle to Lincoln, Neb. It was a month ago that he traveled to New York City to take part in the marathon there. In between, the blind-deaf Norwegian spent weeks hospitalized and in a rehabilitation center after he was injured when his bicycle was hit from behind by a Jeep. We're talking multiple broken bones. I'm late with this, but it's never to late to celebrate such an accomplishment. / Argus Leader

Wilbraham, MA
DEAF, DEVELOPMENTALLY DISABLED IN MASS. FACE UNCERTAIN FUTURE AFTER TURNING 22
Before his 22nd birthday on Oct. 31, Andrew Goolishian, who is profoundly deaf and intellectually disabled, spent Monday through Friday in a residential program at American School for the Deaf in West Hartford, surrounded by other young deaf peers and deaf adults. Since he turned 22 – other than his mother, Betsy Davison, and step-father, Van Gothner, who both converse with him in sign language – Andrew has been isolated culturally, linguistically and socially from the world he knew before and wondering when he'll be going back to school. / The Republican

Lafayette, LA
PROGRAMS SPARSE FOR DEAF AND BLIND IN ACADIANA
On the northern end of Lafayette is where you will find Amelia Manor Nursing Home. Some of the residents are in wheelchairs, some are confined to their beds. But there are also a number of residents whose only affliction is that they cannot hear or see. Some, like 57-year-old Phillip Quibodeaux, are both deaf and blind. For people like Quibodeaux, life can be a lonely existence. Speaking through an interpreter, Quibodeaux described how he came to live in the home. / The Advertiser

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE FAKE NELSON MANDELA INTERPRETER?
In the 12 months since Nelson Mandela died aged 95, South Africa has wrestled with a turbulent year in politics. But for Thamsanqa Jantjie , who grabbed headlines around the world by appearing to fake the sign language interpretation of Mandela's memorial service, 2014 has been a chance for a change of career. DEAF, DUMB TAKE OVER IMO GOVT HOUSE
Recently, angry members of the Imo State Deaf Sports Association stormed the Government House in protest of the non-release of N23 million ($123,000 US) meant to enable them travel to Abuja to participate in the ongoing National Deaf Games. They had barricaded the main gate to the Government House for over three hours, making the security personnel at the gate looked helpless as the association members ensured that no one entered or left the Government House until their demands were met. / The Sun

DEAF REACH SCHOOL OPENS DOORS FOR THE UNDER-PRIVILEGED IN PAKISTAN
There are 1.25 million deaf children in Pakistan. Of them, less than two per cent attend school. This is not because they are lacking in ability; rather they suffer from the lack of opportunities to polish their abilities. Speaking at the inauguration of the new deaf reach school in Rashidabad on Saturday, Sindh education minister Nisar Ahmed Khuhro said: “You are not just building a school. You are building a future for these kids.” / The Express Tribune

RIGHT ON TARGET
Bradley Goodyear had been looking for a job for so long, and been rejected for even longer, that he thought an interview at Target last year would be nothing more than another disappointment. He figured it was another phone call he wouldn’t receive. Another door closing before he went through it. But the 40-year-old told The Telegram this week it was nothing like what he had built it up to be. "John (Pritchett, team leader of the department store), called and said I got the job," Goodyear said through ASL translator Sheila Keats. / The Telegram

IMPROVEMENTS HELP PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES TAKE ADVANTAGE OF OPPORTUNITIES
Without the advancement of assistive technology Leanna Rowe’s disability may have forced her down a different road than the one she ended up on. "If I didn't have these technologies -- cochlear implants, hearing aids, electronic stethoscope -- I would be in a much different place than I am now," said the fourth-year nursing student. Rowe has been deaf since birth. However, at the age of seven she had her first cochlear implant — a surgically implanted electronic device — in her right ear. / The Aurora

HOW A DEAF-BLIND LAWYER USES TECHNOLOGY TO REPRESENT HER DISABLED CLIENTS
Haben Girma isn’t your typical lawyer. For starters, she’s a Harvard Law graduate. But that’s not all. She was also named a White House “Champion of Change” in 2013. To top it off, she serves as a Skadden Fellowship Attorney at Disability Rights Advocates. Pretty impressive for someone who is only 26 years old — especially when you consider she’s both deaf and blind. That’s right — Haben is a deaf-blind lawyer. But she hasn’t let her disabilities get in her way. / Above the Law

INTERPRETERS FOR THE DEAF TELL OF THEIR ROLE
For Isaiah Tyler, a key issue for students being trained as interpreters is to give them the skills for providing quality services to the deaf and hard of hearing in the court system. "People's lives can be impacted in a devastating way," said Tyler, 29, one of eight students headed for careers in interpreting who had a poster on display Tuesday at Rochester Institute of Technology's National Technical Institute for the Deaf. / Democrat and Chronicle

DEAF STUDENT FEELS THE MUSIC WITH HIGH TECH HELP
Fourteen-year-old James Graugnard was born with almost no hearing and went fully deaf within a few years. Today, he plays the French horn in the Dutchtown High School marching band. Diagnosed at 18 months with sensorineural hearing loss, James grew up with sophisticated hearing aids. His hearing was getting worse with age. When he was 6, James received his first cochlear implant — an exciting moment, he remembers. “It’s a unique experience when you first get to hear everything,” he said. / The Advocate
