DEAF BUSINESS OWNERS OVERCOME OBSTACLES AND PREJUDICE
Soon after customers arrive at Mozzeria for the first time, they notice something's different about the restaurant: Virtually every staffer is deaf. Owners Russ and Melody Stein also are deaf, and have run their San Francisco restaurant since 2011. Like the Steins, many deaf business owners face challenges that those who can hear may not. They often encounter prejudice. Many don't have the resources they need. And while the Internet has made it possible for them to connect with vendors, bankers, customers and government offices, it's not as accessible as it could be. / The Associated Press

PARKVIEW, DEAF MAN SETTLE SUIT
Parkview Medical Center and a deaf man have settled his lawsuit that alleged the Pueblo hospital violated federal law by not providing effective means of communication to hearing-impaired persons. “Mr. (George) Baca and Parkview worked together to reach an agreement,” the Center for Civil Rights Education and Enforcement said in a statement. Attorney Amy Robertson of the nonprofit center in Denver represented Baca. / The Pueblo Chieftain

Located in the town of Henrietta, the new 61-unit affordable housing project by DePaul Properties was designed and implemented with members of the deaf and hard of hearing community. “The goal was to promote the well-being of individuals in a welcoming environment that is affordable, accessible, and focused on resident safety,” says developer Gillian Conde, vice president of DePaul. / Housing Finance Magazine

WOMAN ADVENTURER GOING BLIND, DEAF WILL NOT FADE AWAY
Rebecca Alexander is a psychotherapist with two master's degrees. She's an avid athlete who has climbed Africa's highest peak, finished the Alcatraz Swim for Sight, she's a cycling instructor, a volunteer and recently published her book, "Not Fade Away." She's accomplished goals many of us can't even imagine doing, all while almost completely deaf and blind. She relies on cochlear implants to hear and a cane to get around. / KSNV

SIGN LANGUAGE TEACHER'S VIRAL VIDEO DANCE HAS A POSITIVE IMPACT
Kyle Kiser danced like nobody was watching, but the world did. The ASL teacher, who is deaf/hard-of-hearing himself, danced and signed to energize his class at Cleveland Community College. Emily Norwood, one of Kiser’s students, recorded the dance and posted it to Facebook. With a message describing Kiser as a "fun and wonderful teacher," she said, “Let's see if we can make this dancing sign language teacher viral!!” After only a week and a half, Norwood’s video had received almost 13 million views and nearly 500,000 shares on Facebook. / Shelby Star

SILENT POETRY ADOPTS VISUAL RHYME
Kenny Lerner stole a wallet from an inadvertent man at a gas station, handing it to Peter Cook, who then gave out the money to the audience in the fully-packed Sanders Auditorium. Row by row, the audience threw the money around, creating a chain of hand waves from the stage to the technical booth. No money was actually present. No voices spoken. No inadvertent man indeed. Only movement and imagination dominated the room. It was an ASL poetry performance lamenting fossil fuel investment by Peter Cook and Kenny Lerner, spotlight artists of the Creative Arts Across Disciplines Initiative (CAAD) last week at Vassar. / The Miscellany News

Jorja Hope, 12, is expected to lose her hearing in the next year. She is also a major Taylor Swift fangirl. PROTESTERS DEMAND DEAF LEADER FOR DEAF SCHOOLS

It’s enough. We want a deaf superintendent, someone who understands and knows and who can lead our children to success,” Tim Mallach said at a protest in London Friday. “It’s 2015.” / The London Free Press

Her thesis could open doors for the use of technology for deaf academics and the deaf community. / University Affairs

A deaf woman was refused entry into a pub restaurant because she had an assistance dog with her. Carol Butler and her family were in the Horse and Jockey pub when they were told they could not eat in the restaurant with other diners. Deaf children who were victims of sexual abuse for decades at a Woodford Green deaf school have come forward. In an investigation by TV’s Newsnight and See Hear, former pupils of the Woodford School for Deaf Children have said they were serially abused by headteacher Beatrice Ingall’s husband Eric. Beatrice and Eric had set up the school in 1951. Mr Ingall was the bursar and handyman. Former pupil Miriam, not her real name, told the BBC: “It was something that took place every day, at any time – morning, afternoon, evening, round-the-clock.” / Ilford Recorder

FLORIDA SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF & THE BLIND: DESTINEE GERMANY'S STORY
Growing up in Chattahoochee at 6 years old, Destinee Germany was misdiagnosed by Gadsden County Schools. “They said, ‘She’s retarded. There’s nothing much we can do for her,’” her mother, Latrecia Germany, recalled. “I cried like a baby." That’s when Latrecia and husband Robert packed up and moved to Leon County. Destinee was enrolled in W.T. Moore Elementary School, where she spent first through seventh grade. A year in, one of her teachers there discussed behavior — good when he faced Destinee, bad when he turned his back. It turned out, she was deaf. / Tallahassee Democrat

HOUSTON DEAF CHURCH ENHANCES SANCTUARY WITH VIBRATING FLOOR AND HIGH-TECH LIGHTING
As Southern Baptists, members of northwest Houston's Woodhaven Baptist Church are accustomed to being moved by God's word. That was certainly the case when they arrived for services Sunday -- the first in a sanctuary transformed by a $1 million renovation. More than 60 percent of the church's 175 members are deaf, and recently completed improvements to the church sanctuary -- originally designed for use as a basketball gym and worship space -- are expected to enhance the experience of both the hearing-impaired and their hearing relatives. / Houston Chronicle

STOLEN BLIND, DEAF DOG REUNITED WITH FAMILY
Shadow, a blind, deaf cocker spaniel who was stolen from his yard, sees his family for the first time in a week. 11/15/15 Whoever stole Shadow, a senior cocker spaniel, from his Wilmington yard Nov. 8 chose a most vulnerable target. The partially blind, deaf dog who rarely barks epitomizes "See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil." That Shadow is back home without physical harm after a harrowing week is a credit to his street smarts, concerned neighbors and the unsung heroes of animal rescue. / The News Journal

TOPEKA TEEN BORN DEAF SAYS SHE'S LUCKY THANKS TO COCHLEAR IMPLANT
It was 14 years ago when 13 NEWS first met a baby girl named Reagan Emerson. She was born deaf. "No one wants to have a child with that diagnosis, but we are glad there are technologies to overcome," says Allison Emerson, Reagan's mother. At 9-months-old, Reagan was the youngest person ever to receive a cochlear implant to help her hear. She wore a pack on her back and a microphone on her head to help capture sound. "The day Reagan's device was turned on was overwhelming. It's honestly been remarkable," says Allison. / WIBW

HEARING LOSS DOESN'T STOP MUSIC SCHOOL OWNER
The path to success can often be detoured by naysayers, but such negativity didn’t stop Anne Rosato. A native of Palm Harbor and the new owner of a music academy, she was once told by a college counselor not to pursue music as a career. “He said that because I’m hearing impaired, I should choose a different profession,” said Rosato. “I decided instead to pursue my talents and dreams and see where they would lead me.” It’s a good thing she listened to herself. / The Suncoast News

'SPRING AWAKENING' BRINGS BROADWAY ACTORS -- AND SPIRIT OF INCLUSION -- TO THE WHITE HOUSE
Spencer Liff puts bodies in motion under some remarkably high-stress conditions, most prominently for the popular television competition show, “So You Think You Can Dance” — an assignment that even earned him an Emmy nomination. But that was a relative breeze compared to the challenge he would later take on, creating production numbers for an ensemble of both deaf and hearing stage actors. “We worked for hours just to get everyone to stand up at the same time,” Liff recalled recently, sitting in the balcony of Broadway’s Brooks Atkinson Theatre. / The Washington Post

'CREED' STAR PROUDLY PLAYS HEARING-IMPAIRED CHARACTER
While characters wearing eyeglasses are commonplace in movies and TV, hearing aids are seldom seen on the screen — especially on leading ladies. That’s why actress Tessa Thompson was honored to play a strong woman who wears the devices in the upcoming Rocky franchise spin-off, “Creed." Thompson plays Bianca, the love interest of title character Adonis Creed, and we learn early in the film that she has degenerative hearing loss. “People with disabilities are hugely underrepresented in culture,” Thompson said. / The Associated Press

REVIEW: 'CAPTIVE AUDIENCES,' SEVEN PLAYS BY DAVID IVES BY NEW YORK DEAF THEATRE
There’s little middle ground in “Captive Audience,” a collection of short works by David Ives: Each play here either sinks onstage or is wonderful to watch. Though, to the credit of the cast, even the pieces that wane don’t lack for trying. That cast is made up of four deaf and four hearing actors, in a production by New York Deaf Theatre. / The New York Times

EXHIBIT CELEBRATES DEAF ARTIST WHO TEACHES HIGH SCHOOLERS HOW TO DRAW, PAINT, SCULPT
Since losing most of his hearing at age 5, Bob Wright has relied on gestures to understand other people. Moving lips. Darting eyes. Flailing limbs. “Because I’m deaf, I depend on body language to tell me what people are thinking,” said Wright, 63. What is perhaps unsurprising, then, is that, in his paintings, the Lancaster artist often focuses on people in motion — swimmers, dancers, hockey players. A sense of movement is plainly evident in many of the 56 pieces in the exhibit “Robert Wright Up to Now,” on the Lancaster campus of Ohio University. / The Columbus Dispatch
