3 STUDENTS AT SCHOOL FOR DEAF HOSPITALIZED AFTER EATING POT-LACED BROWNIES
Three female students at California School for the Deaf, Riverside, were hospitalized Wednesday, Oct. 21, after eating brownies that contained marijuana. "The three students were accompanied to the hospital and each student's parent was immediately notified about the incident," Scott Kerby, the school's interim site superintendent, wrote in a letter to staff that was furnished by the state Department of Education. "The students were released from the hospital the same afternoon." The school is investigating the incident, Kerby wrote. / The Press-Enterprise

MAN SUSPECTED OF ASSAULTING DEAF WOMAN IN THE MISSION ARRESTED
Police have arrested a man who allegedly assaulted a 31-year-old deaf woman in San Francisco's Mission District early Thursday morning, a police spokeswoman said. At about 2:40 a.m., San Francisco police were called to a gas station where a woman was injured and in need of help, San Francisco police spokeswoman Grace Gatpandan said. Since the woman was deaf, she gestured to police that she had been attacked and then pointed to her attacker, who was nearby, Gatpandan explained. / KTVU

DEAF MAN SAYS HOME INVASION HAS LEFT HIM FEELING VIOLATED AND VULNERABLE
An elderly deaf man said he sensed something was wrong, even though he couldn't hear the danger when intruders ransacked his Northland home. Earl, 83, awoke in the middle of the night when the burglars turned on a light. “It’s a bad dream,” Earl remembered thinking, still half asleep. “I can`t believe it happened.” But the nightmare was very much a frightening reality for the man, who has been legally deaf since birth. / fox4kc.com

DEAF WOMAN ARRESTED BY NYPD SETTLES CASE AGAINST CITY
A deaf woman who said she was wrongly arrested by cops who ignored her disability settled her case for $750,000 Tuesday — a figure her attorneys say is the largest of its kind. Diana Williams charged in her suit filed in Manhattan Federal Court that the NYPD officers who slapped her in cuffs ignored police guidelines requiring them to request a sign language interpreter when interacting with deaf people. “Deaf individuals have rights, and they do not have to tolerate discrimination and injustices of any kind,” her attorneys Andrew Rozynski and Eric Baum said in a statement. / NY Daily News

DEAF STUDENTS SAY AGGIE HAND GESTURE OFFENSIVE, NEEDS TO BE CHANGED
At Matt Cerar’s first basketball game last year, he was shocked, and it had nothing to do with the scoreboard. Cerar is a graduate student in USU's deaf education program. He said the current symbol for school spirit — a hand gesture in which the thumbs and index fingers are brought together, forming a diamond shape, with the pinkie fingers of both hands extended — is simply unacceptable. “It’s supposed to be representing an ‘A’ for Aggies,” Cerar explained. In ASL, the sign is a technical reference to female anatomy./ Deseret News

DEAF-MUTE INDIAN WOMAN, STRANDED 12 YEARS IN PAKISTAN, RETURNS HOME
A rare, heartwarming story played out between arch rivals India and Pakistan when a deaf and mute woman in her early 20s who accidentally crossed the border into Pakistan 12 years ago returned home Monday. Draped in a bright red and white kurta (shirt) and salwar, Geeta waved as she stepped out at New Delhi airport to a warm welcome from scores of people, Indian authorities and members of the Pakistan High Commission. / VOA News

A hearing and speech impaired minor girl, who had come to the city along with her mother to help her elder sister, was raped by a man who lived in Rajendra Nagar, the colony where the survivor too was living. THAT TIME MARILYN MANSON AND HIS BAND COVERED A DEAF GROUPIE WITH MEAT AND PEED ON HER
Story time! Once upon a time, around the year of 1993, Marilyn Manson and his band took a brief break from recording sessions in South Beach Studios to grab something to eat, and ended up covering a deaf girl with meat and peeing on her. The gal's name is Adina Slotsky (born in 1975), also known as Alyssa, and the moment she entered the studio in which the band, members of Nine Inch Nails and producer Sean Beavan were hanging out, things escalated quickly. / Ultimate-Guitar.com

HOW BELGIUM CAMPUS IS CREATING A FUTURE IN TECHNOLOGY FOR DEAF STUDENTS
Belgium Campus is relatively small. With only 600 students, the private university started back in 1999 with a clear goal in mind: to alleviate the educational and unemployment challenges that exist in South Africa. But today, they’re not only producing highly-skilled graduates, they’re creating strides with a new program in particular, one that specifically tackles another educational need in the country: creating opportunities for the deaf. / htxt.africa

DEAF ICELANDIC CHEF WINS INTERNATIONAL CONTEST
Icelander Unnur Pétursdóttir was the winner of the international Deaf Chef cooking contest in Valby, Denmark Oct. 24. The contest is, as the name implies, solely for chefs that are hearing impaired. In an interview with Morgunblaðið, Pétursdóttir said, "A chef's work is taxing and very busy but it's got nothing to do with being deaf." Pétursdóttir, who is only 21 years old, works as a chef at the prestigious Lava restaurant at the Blue Lagoon in South Iceland. / Icelandic Monitor

DEAF ONTARIO MAN CLASHES WITH CRA OVER ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY
An Ontario man who is deaf says the assistive technology meant to help him communicate more readily with large organizations is now the source of conflict between him and the Canada Revenue Agency. Mitchell LaFrance has been trying to get help from the government organization about his account and said his efforts were thwarted earlier this month when the CRA refused to deal with him via a relay service. "I feel that they are using the old policies and stuck with it," said LaFrance in an email. / The Canadian Press

WIDOW, 84, 'LEFT PENNILESS' IN FEUD WITH DEAF DAUGHTER
An 84-year-old widow has been left penniless after a bitter court feud with her profoundly deaf daughter over ownership of the family’s £1million-plus Chiswick home. Evelyn James ended up in court after her daughter Sheila Wombwell sued her, claiming she had gone back on a promise to give her part of the house. In return for Mrs Wombwell paying £72,000 to update the Victorian property, her mother had promised she could have the bulk of it, she said. Mrs James denied ever making the promise, but has now been ordered by judges to hand over the greater part of the house to her daughter. / London Evening Standard

SIGNS OF LIFE: HOW DEAF THEATRE CAN REINVIGORATE THE SPOKEN WORD
Fourteen years ago I went to Exeter to see Jenny Sealey’s staging of The Changeling. What made it so vivid was the signing, which added layer upon layer to the drama, multiplying the gaps between the way we interpret language and misconstrue intention. The signing wasn’t a distraction, it was a bonus that added to our understanding of the drama, whether we could hear the text or not. That was a long time ago, but we’re finally seeing more artists, deaf or not, understand the creative potential of signing on stage. / The Guardian

DEAF GIRL USES SIGN LANGAUGE TO COMMUNICATE WITH PET DOG
A deaf New Mexico girl is using sign language to communicate with her pet dog. “She does everything with him,” said Neeva’s mom Chelsea Goff. While Neeva, 4, eats, her dog Baxter cleans up her crumbs. When it’s time to go outside and play, he is by her side. “He is just always with her. If she’s asleep in bed, we can guarantee that he is in her room with her,” said Goff. Neeva and Baxter aren’t your average pair. “We found out right away after she was born that she didn’t have hearing,” said Goff. / KRQE News 13

DEAF DOG HAS ITS DAY AT SCHOOL
Sutherland Public School students were treated to an assembly Tuesday, featuring Eric Melvin and his dog, Angelyne. The pair visited with children to share their life stories. “I adopted her and when I took her to classes, she would not come to me even though I called her,” Melvin said. When Melvin took her to the veterinarian, he learned she was born deaf and was asked what he wanted to do. He had two options, let her go or keep her and deal with the disability. He chose the latter. / North Platte Telegraph

A DEAF ARTIST EXPLAINS THE RULES OF 'SOUND ETIQUETTE' -- AND WHY SHE'S KICKING THEM TO THE CURB
Deaf since birth, artist and TED Fellow Christine Sun Kim learned the rules of what she calls "sound etiquette" by watching how hearing people behave and respond to sound. She knew, for example, not to slam the door or eat noisily from a potato chip bag. Now she's ditching the rules in favor of creating her own. Instead of allowing sound to disempower her, she would reclaim it through art. / Tech Insider

SPRING LAKE PARK YOUTH FOOTBALL AGREES TO ACCOMMODATE DEAF PLAYERS
When Dov Nathanson, a deaf fourth-grader, plays football, the vibrations from a drum on the sidelines help him feel the “huts” barked by the quarterback. A sign-language interpreter allows him to follow along in team huddles. When Dov’s parents felt that the Spring Lake Park Panther Youth Football Association was balking at the cost and perceived inconvenience of such accommodations, they sued it under the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Minnesota Human Rights Act.
