Sacramento, CA
BLIND, DEAF MAN WITH CEREBRAL PALSY MURDERED OUTSIDE HOME
Legally blind, partially deaf, walking with a limp, and stuttering while he spoke, Frank Knight posed no risk to anyone. But Sacramento County Sheriff’s investigators say someone gunned down the 58-year-old man as he shuffled from his apartment door to his ParaTransit stop before work on Monday morning. “I really don’t know why anyone would want to shoot someone like that,” his neighbor, who didn’t want to be named out of fear of retaliation, said. / CBS Sacramento

Los Angeles, CA
HOLLYWOOD STUDIOS, NETFLIX NAMED IN CLOSED-CAPTIONING CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT
Disney, Fox, Warner Bros, Paramount, Universal, Sony and Netflix are named in a class action lawsuit accusing the studios and streaming service of discriminating against the deaf and hearing impaired. The suit was filed Monday at the Los Angeles Superior Court. “While the dialogue of some movies or shows are indeed fully subtitled, the practice of not subtitling song/music lyrics is frustratingly widespread,” the complaint stated. / The Wrap

Amazon has agreed to provide captioning on nearly all of its videos for rent or sale by 2016 as part of a deal with the National Association of the Deaf (NAD). The deaf advocacy group announced that by the end of next year, Amazon will caption 100 percent of movies and television shows that have been watched at least 10 times in a three-month period. “We are happy to partner with NAD to extend captions even deeper into our back catalog of titles,” said Jim Freeman, vice president of Amazon Video. / The Hill

DEAF ARIZONA STARBUCKS WORKER ALLEGES DISCRIMINATION IN LAWSUIT
A Surprise woman who worked for a local Starbucks store for seven years has filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Phoenix, alleging that the store fired her for repeatedly asking for interpreters and special accommodation for her deafness. Laura Roberts, 56, worked at a Starbucks store in Peoria from 2007 to 2014, relying mostly on lip-reading to serve customers at the counter. But Roberts, who has been deaf since infancy, communicates primarily in non-verbal ASL, which has a syntax and grammar different from English. As such, her attorneys maintain, she is not entirely fluent in English, and has difficulty reading long documents in English. / The Arizona Republic

Maui, Hawaii
PARENT SUES DOE FOR LACK OF DEAF, HARD-OF-HEARING SERVICES
A Maui mother is suing the Department of Education, claiming it's unable to provide the deaf and hard-of-hearing services that her daughter needs. Coty Luke is not talking about American Sign Language, she says it's called an “oral system." Her daughter, Taysia-Lee, is near deaf. But the implants she has can make her hear, and Luke wants Taysia-Lee to be able to speak without using sign language. / Hawaii News Now

Riverside, CA
'MAJOR OVERHAUL' UNDERWAY AT SCHOOL FOR DEAF
To the thousands of motorists who drive daily past the California School for the Deaf, Riverside, it’s no secret that a mini-building boom is underway. The 60-acre campus, which dates to the early 1950s, has seen renovations through the years, but nothing like today’s work. “This is the first major overhaul of the campus,” said Scott Kerby, the school’s interim superintendent. “After 50 years you can only renovate so much.” / Press-Enterprise

Atlanta, GA
DEAF MAN RESCUED FROM HOUSE FIRE
Firefighters rescued a deaf man from a house fire in the Virginia Highland area on Friday. According to Atlanta Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Sean Johnson, crews were working in the basement of a home at 839 Crestridge Drive when the fire broke out around 10 a.m. The fire extended from the basement to the first floor. Johnson said a woman in the home told firefighters that there were kittens in home, but didn't mention that a man was also in the house. / 11Alive News

A first of its kind apartment community in the state is now open in Henrietta. It's designed to better accommodate income-eligible tenants who are deaf, hard-of hearing and use ASL. Dawn Tomasino couldn't wait to move into her new place at Rochester View Apartments. HOW THE DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING CAN BE PREPARED
Jennifer Saari, a meteorologist with the Huntsville office of the National Weather Service, has spent countless hours putting herself in a deaf or hard-of-hearing person’s shoes. “Most weather alerts are audible, so you may need to actually hear the alert to receive it,” she said. Nowadays, there are several adapters to choose from to attach to your NOAA Weather Radio, such as visual alerts, like strobe lights, and bed and pillow shakers to ensure that you wake up when you need to seek more information. / WAFF

ABUSE AT A DEAF SCHOOL: 'I SCREAMED AT NIGHT, BUT NO ONE COULD HEAR ME'
Many children have positive stories from St Joseph’s School For Deaf Boys in Cabra, Dublin, from its 150-year history. It was the chance for many to learn Irish Sign Language, allowing them to communicate and express themselves comfortably. Others learned trades and were able to leave school and earn a living. The school became known worldwide for its high standards of education – but it also has a murky history starting from the middle of last century. / The Journal

Cork, Ireland
DEAF MAN'S CARE REGIME IMPEDED BY LACK OF INTERPRETER
A Cork woman has aired her frustration at the lack of interpreters available for her deaf son who also has schizophrenia. Jo, who works in a pub in Cork, also revealed that six of her customers took up sign language to aid her 38-year-old son John, who has had a number of psychiatric appointments cancelled because his HSE-appointed interpreter has failed to show. “I require the assistance of their interpreter four times a year and they have let me down, not turned up, rang me at the last minute and no interpreter available,” she said. / Irish Examiner

Toronto, ON, Canada
WHY CBC USED SIGN LANGUAGE TO INTERPRET FEDERAL LEADER INTERVIEWS
In what is said to be an election first, a 90-minute special edition of Mansbridge One on One will include ASL interpretation of Peter Mansbridge's interviews with the federal party leaders. Gary Malkowski, an adviser to the Canadian Hearing Society, says it's the first time a Canadian broadcaster has showcased ASL during a federal election. But Michael Hale, an activist in the deaf community, said that while he salutes the broadcast, he says CBC shouldn't put more money into adding sign language to programs. / CBC News

RESIDENTS OUTRAGED AFTER BLIND, DEAF DOG PURPOSELY RUN OVER, SHOT
Collingwood residents are demanding answers after a video surfaced showing an animal being run over and then shot by someone driving an OPP vehicle Monday night. Police responded to a call for someone who reported seeing a large coyote in the area of Seventh Street, between Walnut and Oak streets, sometime around 9:30 p.m. In a news release issued Tuesday, police said that “for the safety of the community police had to put down this animal.” / CP24.com

Dundee, Scotland
OUTRAGE AFTER DEAF GROUP'S 'SPIRITUAL HOME' IN DUNDEE IS SOLD
A member of Dundee’s deaf community has become embroiled in a row with a national charity. Brian Hogan, secretary of the Tayside Deaf Hub, hit out at Edinburgh-based Deaf Action’s decision to sell a meeting place he claims has been the “spiritual home” of many deaf people in the city for more than 80 years. Mr Hogan insists closing the venue will be a blow to the community, and claimed Dundee won’t see a penny of the profits from the sale. However, property owners Deaf Action say maintaining the building was simply no longer viable. / The Courier

70% OF DEAF PEOPLE WITH DOGS TURNED AWAY FROM SHOPS & RESTAURANTS
Nearly three quarters of deaf people who have a dog to help them say shops and restaurants have turned them away, according to a Buckinghamshire charity. Hearing Dogs for Deaf People have been asking the people they help about the issues they face on the High Street. Sue Curtis, from the charity, says it's disappointing: "It's such a shame. For our recipients, what we try and do is find them confidence to go out and about, so when they get challenged like this it really knocks their confidence." / Mix96.co.uk

PARTIALLY BLIND AND DEAF PIANIST DOES IT HIS WAY
Pianist James Paul Kenny’s renditions of traditional hymnal songs are unlike anything you’ve ever heard. Kenny’s versions are upbeat, jazzy medleys. For as long as the Rigby resident can remember, he’s been doing things his own way. As a young pianist he frustrated his piano teacher by adding his own riffs and improvisations to his sheet music. Kenny’s unique approach has been fostered by both his attitude and his obstacles. He is partially blind and deaf, but those challenges haven’t stopped him from chasing his dreams. / Post Register

7 YEARS SINCE MOPAC BIRTH, GIRL AT CENTER OF DEAF SCHOOL'S HOMECOMING
Amelie Egbert was born into Austin traffic. Literally. On a Thursday morning in October 1998, her parents Denise and Clyde Egbert, were on South MoPac Boulevard when Denise realized the baby wasn’t going to wait and told Clyde to pull the van into the breakdown lane. Three Austin police officers got to the van just as Amelie entered the world. She didn’t wait long to make headlines. We brought you her story later that month. And last Friday, the student at the Texas School for the Deaf turned 7, just ahead of homecoming festivities, at which Amelia served as a crown/ring bearer as part of the homecoming court. / Austin American-Statesman

THIS 3D PRINTED HAIRCLIP HELPS THE DEAF 'HEAR' USING VIBRATIONS AND LIGHT
In a society where sound plays such an important role in the way that humans communicate and navigate through the world, how do you help the deaf community adapt? Well, a small 3D printed device called Ontenna is quickly proving itself to be a great alternative to uncomfortable hearing aids and invasive surgical procedures. Rather than experiencing sound through the ears, Ontenna is clipped on the wearer’s hair where it acts similarly to a cat’s whiskers, so the wearer can actually feel and see sound. / 3DPrint.com

THE DE L'EPEE DEAF CENTER RECEIVES GRANT FROM BEAU RIVAGE
For the deaf, the de l’Epee Deaf Center in Gulfport is their safe haven. Director Greg Crapo said, “This is where the deaf congregate for all of their Christmas parties, Thanksgiving events, everything where they can come to socialize with each other and actually interact with people who speak their language.” They are a non-profit that receives no federal funding. They are largely funded by the Catholic Diocese of Biloxi, but they also rely heavily on community grants. Today the deaf center received a little help from some Beau Rivage employees who presented Executive Director Greg Crapo with a $10,000 check. / WXXV 25

DEAF STAR OF BROADWAY MUSICAL LINKS SUCCESS TO THE SYNAGOGUE
Perhaps it’s not so surprising that Spring Awakening has been revived on Broadway, even if it’s only been six years since it ended its successful run. Certainly more startling, though, is that the current production of “Spring Awakening” features a cast of deaf actors signing their lines — and songs. Even one of the show’s most high-profile stars, Marlee Matlin, who is making her Broadway debut here, concedes that people might consider the idea — deaf actors performing a musical — a bit strange. / Haaretz

CHARTER SCHOOL OPENS 'A LARGER WORLD'
When Raphael Martinez helped launch the Albuquerque Sign Language Academy six years ago, he wondered if the charter school would take off, but he was driven to try for the sake of his now 12-year-old son Ben, who is deaf and has special needs. Today, the K-12 academy has 100 children enrolled, a waiting list of 40 and plans to expand to a much larger building near Downtown Albuquerque. The 30,000-square-foot facility would triple the school’s space, allowing it to comfortably serve 200 students and provide amenities such as a fitness center and community garden. / Albuquerque Journal

DEAF TALENT, SEEN AND HEARD
Howie Seago didn’t like Don Nguyen’s play Sound the first time he read it. It explores the controversial issue of cochlear implants through a dispute between a Deaf father and his hearing ex-wife over whether their daughter should get them, but what bothered Seago was the parallel story of Alexander Graham Bell’s quest to invent the first hearing aid to “cure” deafness. He felt the play was too nice to Bell, who’s not exactly a hero in the Deaf community for his views that deaf people should be sterilized and not intermarry. / American Theatre

MOVIE REVIEW: DARK UNDERCURRENTS RUN THROUGH 'THE TRIBE'
Schoolkids gone bad, bullying the young, mugging strangers. Teen girls turned into truck stop prostitutes, rough boys fighting and drinking. It’s the stuff of juvenile delinquent films dating back to the ’50s. The difference in “The Tribe” — and it is a difference that’s persistently haunting — is that all the kids are deaf and are played by hearing-impaired actors. Not one word is spoken in the movie and no subtitles are used either, although all the mundane sounds of life — doors shutting, cars driving by, the clunk of a wooden hammer on a skull — are still there. Sound goes on, just not for these kids. / The Detroit News
