PRONEWS 7 INVESTIGATES: TEACHING THE DEAF IN AISD
Right now, the Deaf and American Sign Language (ASL) community is greatly concerned about the Amarillo Independent School District's (AISD) policy on not using ASL as the primary language of interaction for Deaf students in the classroom. AISD, instead of using ASL uses Morphemic Sign System (MSS) to instruct Deaf students. AISD says MSS is English and promotes reading and speech skills, but critics said it is isolating and limiting Deaf student's ability to thrive outside of the walls of their classroom. / ConnectAmarillo.com

DEAF KINDERGARTENER LEFT ON BUS AFTER PARENTS SAY DRIVER 'FORGOT' HER
Not once, but twice. That's the amount of times a North Columbus family says their 5-year-old deaf daughter was left on a Columbus City School Bus too long. Jessica and Carl Foster say when their daughter Kaleigh didn't get dropped off her bus route at her regular time Wednesday, they began calling her school and the bus garage. They say transportation officials blamed the error on a subsitute bus driver. / WTTE

FAKE LOTTERY EMAIL TARGETS HEARING IMPAIRED
Criminals are now targeting the hearing impaired. A viewer contacted 12 On Your Side after she was fooled into believing she'd hit the jackpot. You've probably never heard of the U.S.A. Deaf Lottery and it's for good reason: it doesn't exist. But that's not stopping cyber crooks. The viewer, who admittedly fell for this, was too embarrassed to talk on camera but didn't want anyone else to be fooled and called 12 On Your Side to spread the word. / NBC12

HEARING IMPAIRED WOMAN FEELS DISCRIMINATED AGAINST BY MACYS
A woman from Somers, who is deaf, said she felt slighted by a major department store. Bernadette Balletti has been a loyal Macy's customer for decades, but said she was told that the only way she could get a replacement Macy's card was to talk with a representative on the phone. "It's wrong on so many levels," Balletti said. / WFSB 3

INQUEST INTO DEATH OF DEAF TEEN TOLD OF COMMUNICATIONS PROBLEMS AT YOUTH CENTER
An inquest has been told that staff at the Prince Albert Youth Residence had trouble communicating with a 16-year-old deaf boy who died after going into medical distress at the facility. Dylan LaChance was taken by police to the residence the day after a fight outside the high school on the Big River First Nation a year ago. Brad Impey, a case management worker, testified that early on, staff noticed LaChance had trouble communicating as they went over rules, policies and procedures. / Prince George Citizen

'MY PARTNER IS DEAF BUT WON'T ADMIT IT'
Dear Virginia: My partner is deaf but won’t admit it. The TV is on so loud that the neighbors complain, and no one can hear what she’s saying and she accuses them of being deaf. Doorbells are accused of being faulty, and she says that phones don’t ring for long enough. We don’t start conversations, because everything has to be repeated. Any suggestions? / The Independent

A deaf mute homeless man who killed another man by knocking him under a Dublin Bus may be sent to the UK for treatment as there are no appropriate services for him here. A jury found Edward Connors, 30, guilty last May following an eight-day manslaughter trial. He also admitted injuring, threatening or intimating two people with a syringe in separate incidents. THEATRE REVIEW: DEAF ACTOR'S ONE-WOMAN SHOW DIVES INTO OFFBEAT HUMOR
The one-woman show "The Sound of Waves" is inspired by the experiences of profoundly deaf actor Jodie Harris, who received a cochlear implant and had to learn to negotiate a whole new stage of sound. Playwright Gareth Ellis dives into Harris's emotional landscape -- or seascape, actually -- through whimsical submarine allegory. Harris adopts an alter-ego, a girl called Shelley whose primary school teacher, Mrs Black, has some sort of hideous personality disorder and is constantly threatening to kill off her students in gruesome ways. / Sydney Morning Herald

DEAF FOUNDATION CALLS FOR REVISION OF HEARING AID FUNDING
One in every six New Zealanders live with some type of hearing loss. Hearing aid technologies are significant key to many of them living a full life. The Ministry of Health's Hearing Aid Funding Scheme was established to cover the cost of hearing aids for adults with long-term hearing difficulties and dual disability or low income. Results from a recent survey indicate that the current hearing aid funding scheme does not meet the needs of many adults who fit the policy criteria. / Scoop News

Between dropped calls, lost connections and choppy or missing video, the VPs had performance issues. Ultimately, technicians decided the only alternative left was to move the VPs off the base network on to commercial connections.
