PRINCIPAL OF SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF IN MILLCREEK RESIGNS, CHASTISING LEADERSHIP
Just one week into the new school year, Jill Radford has resigned as principal
of Jean Massieu School of the Deaf in Millcreek, citing differences with the
superintendent of the Utah Schools for the Deaf and the Blind. “If I hope
to exact real and measurable change, I simply cannot continue to work for a
superintendent who so blatantly demoralizes the efforts, dedication and passion
of the faculty and staff at JMS,” Radford wrote in a letter after she
announced her resignation. / The

TEACHER FOR DEAF SENTENCED FOR SEX WITH UNDERAGE GIRL HE MET ON THE
INTERNET
A student teacher for the deaf was sentenced last Wednesday to one to three
years in prison for engaging in sex with a 15-year-old Marcellus girl he met
over the Internet. That sentence will be served at the same time as a 20-year
sentence Micah S. Brown received the previous week in federal court for luring
the girl into a sexually explicit relationship on the Internet. Brown, 31, had
nothing to say in court as County Judge William Walsh sentenced him for third-degree
criminal sexual act. / Syracuse

DEAF GIRL'S MOTHER FILES LAWSUIT AGAINST SCHOOL BOARD, ALLEGES HARASSMENT
The mother of a deaf student filed a lawsuit against the Kanawha County Board
of Education last week, asking a judge to temporarily prevent school officials
from forcing her daughter to attend Capital High School amid allegations that
an interpreter there had been harassing her. For at least the past two years,
Regina M. Pine has been asking school officials to allow her daughter Ariel
Depp, 16, to attend South Charleston High School, which lies next door to the
family's home. But Ariel must attend Capital, as it is the only high school
in the county equipped to teach hearing-impaired children. / The

BUS NEVER ARRIVES FOR DEAF STUDENTS
A couple of special needs students are supposed to catch the bus to school every
day. But their parents said that’s not what’s happening. Fourteen-year-old
Courtney Alladin was looking forward to the new school year at J.L. Long Middle
School but he missed the first six days of class. “I was mad. It was six
days,” he said. His mother Tracey Alladin said the bus never picked him
up and she had no other way to get him to school. / MyFox

IOWA SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF AVOIDS BUDGET FIGHTS
The three public universities overseen by the Iowa Board of Regents must frequently
fight to stave off budget cuts, but the regent's small School for the Deaf has
managed to largely avoid reductions thanks to strong support from lawmakers
and the community. Backing for the 141-year-old school on the outskirts of Council
Bluffs comes despite a big per-student cost -- an average of $97,609 per child.
Legislators appear to agree with students and others, who argue the school is
worth the price. / Chicago

DRIVER BLINDED BY SUN HITS DEAF PEDESTRIAN IN CEDAR RAPIDS
Sunlight blinded a Cedar Rapids driver Monday, causing her to hit a pedestrian,
police said. Police said a westbound PT Cruiser hit Duane Imoehl, 47, of Cedar

VSDB WAITING FOR COMPUTERS
As students and teachers at the Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind close
out the first week of school, they look forward to the day when the school will
be fully equipped with computers again. Although it could be months before they
see that. They have finally untangled themselves after eight years from the
state's computer agency and its restrictions. But the school had to give back
most of the computers it had been renting from the agency. And it can't yet
buy enough to replace them all. / The

STATE SCRAPS INVESTIGATION OF SUITS AND A KEG FUNDRAISER
The state Human Rights Commission closed its investigation into the guy-centric
fundraiser “Suits and a Keg” because it could not locate the woman
who allegedly filed the complaint, its director said Thursday. A woman claiming
to be deaf and breast-feeding a baby filed a complaint with the state on July
29, saying that organizers of the Aug. 12 event told her she and her infant
could not attend the fundraiser, which featured whiskey, beer and cigars. But
no record of the woman, a Rebecca Pulliam, could be found by The Columbian.

HISTORIC DEAF CENTER CLOSES
A support group for deaf people in North Kirklees has closed after 120 years.
Dewsbury, Batley and Spenborough Centre for the Deaf has existed since 1891,
when the group set up shop in St Hilda’s Church in Batley. It later moved
to Dewsbury, and for the last 40 years the centre has been based in Oxford Road.
However, numbers have fallen in recent years, so that now the group only has
around 20 members. Chairman John Parker said numbers were too low to justify
keeping such a large building for the group, so the premises were sold in May.

DEAF MAN THANKS GOD FOR RESTORED HEARING AFTER EARTHQUAKE
Calling it a miracle, a 75-year-old veteran from Virginia has credited God and
the powerful earthquake that shook much of the East Coast for helping to restore
his hearing. "It was God's blessing," Robert Valderzak told ABC News.
"It was a miracle for me." Valderzak had fallen and fractured his
skull on June 19, Father's Day, and suffered severe hearing loss, according
to doctors. His diagnosis changed, however, when the 5.8-magnitude earthquake,
centered near Richmond, literally shook Valderzak out of his bed last week.

it was a deaf preacher signing a sermon to a deaf congregation. One recent Sunday,

SUBTITLE GLASSES FOR THE DEAF, FROM SONY
Surprisingly few cinemas make the effort to cater for the deaf and when they
do, they tend to have screenings at less popular times. It would be a very rare
occurrence for a deaf person to be able to enjoy a subtitled film on a very
popular night of the week which more or less excludes them from the mainstream.
It is therefore great news that Sony has announced their intention to develop
glasses that function as a subtitle machine. / Gadget
