VA. SPCA EXEC'S DOG DIES AFTER 4 HOURS IN HOT CAR
An executive for an anti-animal cruelty group says her 16-year-old blind and deaf dog died after she accidentally left him in her hot car for four hours. Robin Starr, the CEO of the Richmond Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, says she didn't realize "Louie" was in the car until noon. Starr's husband, Ed, told the Richmond Times-Dispatch he put the dog in her car as she got ready for work Aug. 19. She often took the dog to work with her. / AP

San Juan Bautista, CA
SHERIFF: DEAF, MUTE WOMAN TIED UP, RAPED
A San Juan Bautista man accused of holding a deaf and mute woman against her will and then raping her was arrested August 19. Sheriff's deputies said Roberto Carranza was arrested after he allegedly raped the 40-year-old woman in his San Juan Bautista trailer over the weekend. The woman, who is from Watsonville, went to Carranza's trailer voluntarily on Friday after being invited to a party. After the party, Carranza allegedly refused to take the woman home and held her captive during the weekend, tying her up and raping her several times, deputies said. / KSBW

DEAF, MUTE WESLACO WOMAN REMAINS MISSING
Weslaco police are asking for the public's help in locating a missing deaf and mute woman. Family members reported Carlota Mendoza missing on June 27, 2009. The 46-year-old woman left her home after a family misunderstanding. The family told Weslaco police that they have not heard from Carlota since. / Valley Central

DEAF SCHOOL DOWN TO SIX STUDENTS
On-campus enrollment at South Dakota School for the Deaf is down to six students this year as administrators shift their focus to helping deaf students at mainstream schools across the state. Enrollment was about 30 in January when Gov. Mike Rounds proposed closing the campus to save money. Federal stimulus money helped keep the doors open for at least another year. Jack Warner, executive director of the Board of Regents, which manages the deaf school, said the state will continue to serve students who use American Sign Language, but how and where they will do it is up for discussion. / Argus Leader

SCAM ALERT FOR ST. RITA'S SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF
St. Rita's School for the Deaf is warning the community about a potential scam. The school has been getting reports that several individuals are going door to door selling unauthorized raffle tickets for the chance to win money or a television in St. Rita's name. Administrators say the school does not solicit donations door to door. / Kentucky Post

ISDB GOING THROUGH CHANGES
The Idaho School for the Deaf and the Blind is starting out its school year with changes. Mary Dunne, ISDB's superintendent since 2007, retired this summer, ending a 37-year career at the school. ISDB has also shifted from being under the Idaho State Board of Education to an independent entity, the Idaho Bureau of Educational Services for the Deaf and the Blind, with its own board of directors. Aylee Schaefer, formerly the transition coordinator for the blind and visually impaired at the state board of education, is the interim administrator at ISDB. / Times-News

LOCAL MOTHER LEADS CRUSADE FOR DEAF AND BLIND EDUCATION
A local school is trying to get a new program off the ground for next fall geared towards helping the 185 deaf and blind children currently in Kentucky. Debbie Garvue is a teacher, but six years ago, she also became the mother of a deaf and blind daughter. Maddy is a student at the Heuser Hearing and Language Academy. She’s only been here for a year, but it's done wonders for her. So now her mom wants to make sure they not only continue to help Maddy, but everyone else like her. / WHAS11

CHINESE TEAM WILL NOT ATTEND DEAFLYMPICS OPENING: ORGANIZERS
The Chinese team that will participate in the Deaflympics Taipei 2009 is not expected to attend the opening ceremony on Sept. 5, a top organizer of the event said Monday. The 100-strong Chinese team is scheduled to arrive in Taiwan around 9: 40 p.m. Sept. 5, which means it will miss the opening which is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. the same day, said Emile C. J. Sheng, chief executive officer of the organizing committee for the Taipei Deaflympics. When asked by reporters at a news conference Monday whether the Chinese team was skipping the Deaflympics opening because of the Dalai Lama's current visit in Taiwan, Sheng said he had no information to that effect. / The China Post

DEAF PLAYERS IN TEARS
It was a pathetic sight when deaf players burst into tears after they learnt that they will not be going to the Deaflympics Games in China. Officials of the National Sports Commission (NSC) Sunday revealed the shocking news to the players in camp at the Liberty Stadium, Ibadan, Oyo State. The deaf players, who could not believe that their preparation for the Games, which kicks off in China Taipei on Friday, would come to nothing broke down, cursed the authorities for wasting their time at the camp all this while. Nigeria pulled out of the Deaflympic Games due to lack of funds. / The PM News

GIRL, 9, MASTERS 600 SIGN LANGUAGE GESTURES SO SHE CAN TELL DEAF MOTHER 'I LOVE YOU'
Learning another language is a skill that most adults struggle to master. And when the words have to be signed rather than spoken it's doubly difficult. But nine-year-old Tayla Reynolds has taken it in her stride and become one of the youngest people to learn the art of sign language. In just six months she has mastered 600 hand movements and can communicate with others proficient in British Sign Language. Among them is her mother Debbie, 35, who is hard of hearing. / Daily Mail

YOBS MAKE DEAF MUM'S LIFE HELL
A profoundly deaf woman is being made a prisoner in her own home after a three year campaign by local vandals left her scared to step out of her own front door. Alison Morgan, 50, who has been deaf since birth, lives in Newport, with her 10-year-old daughter Aimee Waters. But since the family moved in 2006 her mother says they have been subject to a sustained series of attacks by local youths, including having their door kicked in, car wing mirrors smashed, graffiti sprayed on walls and even an iron bar thrown at Miss Morgan’s mother June Morgan. / South Wales Argus

OLYMPIC CREW'S SIGN OF THE TIMES
A team of web enthusiasts from Grangemouth, near Falkirk, is travelling to Taiwan to gather footage of this year's Deaflympics. Andrew Thomson, 45, and his crew are filming the games, where 4,000 athletes are competing - including 200 from the UK, for the Sign-tube site. The service, which attracts about one million hits a month, is considered the "deaf version" of YouTube. / BBC News

DEAF BOY IN HIT-AND-RUN
A nine-year-old deaf boy is in a serious condition in a Durban hospital after he was knocked over by a hit-and-run driver on his way to school August 19. The unnamed schoolboy from Amanzimtoti was crossing Adams Road outside the Durban School for the Hearing Impaired when he was knocked down in front of other pupils. The driver of the car sped off but later handed himself over to police. / The Times

DEAF BOY, 14, WAS BADLY HURT IN SUV SMASH
A 14-year-old deaf boy remained in intensive care yesterday after an SUV smashed into a Hamilton courier office last Friday and pinned him against a wall. The victim was a summer student on his last day at work. His mother told The Royal Gazette: "He's a deaf child. He has injuries to his abdomen his colon was torn and his bowel was punctured. He was working behind the counter at the time and he was a direct hit. The SUV pushed him through a wall and he was pinned there." / The Royal Gazette

UPCOMING VATICAN CONFERENCE FOCUSES ON ROLE OF THE DEAF IN THE CHURCH
In response to numerous requests for how the Catholic community could increase its attention toward the deaf, the Vatican has organized an upcoming conference focusing on the role of deaf people in the church. The Pontifical Council for Health Care Ministry decided to dedicate its annual international conference this year to the condition, needs and experiences of deaf people, including deaf religious and laypeople and their families. / Catholic News Service

CHURCH BUILDING NEW DEAF OUTREACH CENTER
Christ Lutheran Church for the Deaf, which has been in Jacksonville for more than 60 years, is building a new outreach center. Ground was broken for the footings at the end of July by Buhl Masonry. The new building will replace the old parsonage, which suffered severe water damage in January. It will include new rest rooms, a meeting room and a new office and workroom. / Journal-Courier

KIDS OF DEAF PARENTS FIND NEW FRIENDS AT PITTSFORD CAMP
Connor Hamilton learned sign language when he was 3 years old -- out of necessity. Connor, now 8, needed to be able to communicate with his parents, who are deaf. Two weeks ago, he found himself among other hearing children who share that common bond. The five-day Camp for Children of the Deaf Adult, which ended August 25, was held at the Pittsford Community Center. / Democrat and Chronicle

DC'S UNDERGROUND CULTURE
A lot of people go to DC to see the regular tourist stuff like the Smithsonian, Vietnam Memorial, Holocaust Museum, and Arlington National Cemetery. However there is one blip that a lot of people miss or don’t know about D.C., that is this city is considered to be the center of deaf culture in the United States due to the proximity of a little university called Gallaudet, located in the Northeast corner just a few blocks behind Union Station. Gallaudet is the world’s only four year liberal arts university for the deaf and hard of hearing, established in 1856, when Abraham Lincoln signed the school charter. It may seem like a small and insignificant little school, but its bell tower used to be the center piece of the town, waking up congress, letting them know it was time to head to their morning sessions. / OnMilwaukee

DEAL HELPS DISABLED DISPUTE CREDIT CARD CHARGES
New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo says HSBC bank's credit card division is agreeing to a new national standard to serve customers who are blind or deaf. Cuomo says the agreement comes after a blind New Yorker was repeatedly told that she couldn't dispute a charge unless she completed a written form. HSBC Card Services Inc. will make several changes in customer service and on its Web site to help customers with vision or hearing loss or other disabilities challenge charges on their accounts. / AP

EXERCISE PUTS MEDICAL STUDENTS IN DEAF PATIENTS' SHOES
India Johnson went from a primary care physician to a psychiatrist to an emergency room to a social worker and a pharmacy, all as part of a lesson in empathy. The 22-year-old from Hinesville, Ga., was among about 100 first-year medical students last Friday at Deaf Strong Hospital, a role-reversal exercise at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. The event, the only one of its type in the country, has students consult "health providers" who are actually members of the local deaf community. IN THE TRENCHES: SALES IN SIGN LANGUAGE
Dia Pileta and Tray Bournazian are using their fluency in American Sign Language to aid car shoppers at John Marazzi Nissan who communicate primarily through that language. Pileta learned the language about one and a half years ago with her daughter Jennifer, 11, who has a close friend who is deaf. Bournazian's parents were deaf, so he began signing as a child so he could communicate with and assist them. Lori Timson, executive director of the Deaf Service Center of Southwest Florida, in south Fort Myers, said John Marazzi Nissan is the only local dealership that offers sign language services. / News-Press

Keith Wann's ASL Comedy Tour 2009-2010

FORMER SOONER FACING MOLESTATION, PORN CHARGES
A former University of Oklahoma football player who wrote an autobiography about being a deaf athlete and depression has been charged with child molestation and pornography. A Norman police affidavit says 29-year-old Eric Thunander was arrested last Tuesday and has confessed. He's being held in the Cleveland County jail on three counts of lewd acts with a child and one count of possession of child pornography. / AP

DEAF 7'0 NBA PROSPECT READY TO QUIT
One more summer league training camp, one more round of false promises and exaggerated hope, and Lance Allred found himself on the Orlando Magic’s bench honoring the final days of a useless July commitment. As the deaf son of a polygamist colony, the most improbable 7-foot prospect, an NBA front office had once more underestimated his abilities. “I will just say this about the end in Orlando: Some people don’t understand that because my hearing is impaired, I’m really, really good at reading lips from even across the gym,” Allred said. “With some of these [team executives], it’s just like you’re in high school again with all the cliques, the way that they talk about you. QUIET STAR?
The running back tears down the field, scoring a touchdown before defenders have even reached the 10-yard line. The Michigan School for the Deaf football team is back. The members have got a long way to go before the season starts in about two weeks. They are a team of players who have never competed and who have minimal equipment. But, the players say they are ready. They've been ready for a while. Location: District of Columbia

Position summary: This full-time position is responsible for Telecommunications Relay Services (TRS) and Captioned Telephone Relay Service (CapTel®) outreach activities, marketing, and gathering information which will help improve the quality of service and increase the number of customers served in the District of Columbia. Individual will be required to travel as needed.

Preferred education, experience and skills:
Knowledge of American Sign Language is preferred.
Experience in public relations activities.
Direct work experience with Telecommunication Relay Service or knowledge of Captioned Telephone Relay Service is helpful.

Ability to organize and prioritize work and meet deadlines.
Strong written, analytical and interpersonal skills.
