From the White House to City Hall, the 20th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was commemorated with speeches that fell on deaf ears in Hollywood as taxi cab operators refused to transport deaf tourists and a security guard choked a deaf shoplifting suspect for failing to comply with verbal instructions. We've come a long way but it’s apparent that some folks still haven’t gotten the message. / CityWatch

Blind or deaf consumers, who have fought to make home phones and television more accessible, say they are now being left behind on the Web and many mobile devices. Touch-based smart-phone screens confound blind people who rely on buttons and raised type. Web video means little to the deaf without captioning. But new legislation is in the works to put the same pressure on consumer electronics companies that revolutionized an earlier generation of technology for the vision- and hearing-impaired. / The Washington Post

On July 26, the Department of Justice issued four advanced notice of proposed rulemaking calling for public comments about proposed updates to the Americans with Disabilities Act which would affect the rules for websites, movie theatres, 9-1-1 services, and equipment/furniture manufacturers. The National Association of the Deaf urges the deaf and hard of hearing community to tell the DOJ what our community needs. / NAD

DEAF MAN, 24, ACCUSED OF RAPING GIRL, 7
An East Boston man arrested during a Bible study session at an Allston church last Wednesday night, according to police, was arraigned the next day on charges that he raped a 7-year-old girl, the daughter of another parishioner, multiple times over the past six months. Erik Roldan, who is hearing impaired, had met the girl’s family at the church and was occasionally counseled by the father. / Boston Globe

JUDGE TO ISSUE VERDICT TO DEAF MAN SEPT. 3
A Summit County judge will announce his decision early next month in the long-running murder case of an Akron man who cannot hear or speak, authorities said. Jerron W. Johnson, 24, is charged with the rape and murder of an Akron woman, the sexual assaults of two other women, an unrelated voyeurism charge and other offenses. Summit Common Pleas Thomas A. Teodosio took the matter under advisement after last week's closing arguments and will announce his decision in court at 1 p.m. Sept. 3. / Akron Beacon-Journal

NCSD DIRECTOR REMAINS ON SUSPENSION
The investigation into abuse and neglect allegations at the North Carolina School for the Deaf is continuing, but officials expect it will be wrapped up by the end of the week. Renee McCoy, a spokeswoman for the state, said on Monday the school’s director, Janet McDaniel, remains suspended. The state suspended McDaniel, whose salary is $97,115 a year, with pay on July 16. Dr. Esther Brassell has been serving as director of the school during the investigation. / The News Herald

SCHOOL FOR DEAF PURCHASES LOURDESMONT FOR $2.4 MILLION
The Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf has purchased the Lourdesmont school campus for $2.4 million. The purchase of the 100-acre property on Venard Road shows "we're here to stay," Superintendent Donald Rhoten said Monday. "We're putting our money where our mouth is." / The Times-Tribune

BLIND, DEAF SCHOOLS PROJECT TO BE CUT BACK
The proposed redesign of the Ohio schools for the deaf and blind will be substantially scaled back to save money, and a provision for union-only labor might be jettisoned now that state officials have discovered that it likely added to the price. "I think all options have to be on the table," Richard Murray, director of the Ohio School Facilities Commission, said last Friday. / Columbus Dispatch

SUNSHINE COTTAGE OPENS NEW BUILDING FOR HEARING-IMPAIRED KIDS
The thud of book bags hitting the floor, the rustle of folders and the clatter of classroom toys make up the background noise of a typical first day of school. For the students who began their day Thursday at Sunshine Cottage School for Deaf Children, listening for those sounds is part of their learning. The school's goal is not to teach hearing-impaired children to sign or lip-read, but to listen and speak. That process may be made easier as Sunshine Cottage transitions into its third campus since its founding in 1947. / Express-News

MS SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF GETS A DORM MAKEOVER
Classes start for children at the Mississippi School for the Deaf Monday. Some of the students arrived at their dorm room Sunday evening and got a huge surprise. Building C which houses younger and older boys was completely made over by the Junior League of Jackson. Volunteers spent weeks painting walls, monogramming towels, buying new bedding and outfitting bathrooms. / WLBT

DEAF STUDENTS TEST SIGN LANGUAGE ON SMARTPHONES
For most people, video chat on cellphones is a fun application. But for some users, video chat could make a huge difference to their quality of life. Engineers at the University of Washington have developed a system that helps deaf and hearing-challenged users communicate using video chat efficiently and at low cost over 3G networks. DEAF MUTE DIES IN HIT-AND-RUN IN MANILA
A 16-year-old deaf mute was killed in a hit-and-run incident involving a delivery truck in Manila, before dawn Saturday. Senior Police Officer 2 Glenmore Vallejo, Manila police investigator, said Sarah Bautista was crossing Lawton Avenue around 2 a.m. when a delivery truck hit her. Vallejo said the delivery truck's driver sped off, leaving Bautista dead. / ABS-CBN News

'SENCITY' MUSIC PARTY GETS THE DEAF DANCING TO THE BEAT
How can the hearing impaired experience music? A club in Berlin has just held the German premier of 'Sencity', a music party with vibrating dance floors, aroma jockeys and sign language dancers. 'Sencity' is a mix of music, dance, theater, circus and audience participation that makes use of all the senses to interpret the sounds the deaf cannot hear. The world tour of 'Sencity' is currently in Berlin, after stops in Finland, South Africa, Brazil, Jamaica and the United States. / Deutsche Welle

FAMILY OF DEAF BRISTOL PENSIONER WHO DIED WEEKS AFTER MUGGING SPEAK OUT
The family of a deaf Bristol pensioner who died within weeks of being mugged have spoken of their disgust at his attackers. Ron Dalby, 74, who also needed walking sticks, was pounced upon after visiting a local shop on on July 9. He was knocked to the floor by two women and robbed of his wallet, hitting and cutting his head in the process. After spells in and out of hospital, his health deteriorated and he died at Bristol Royal Infirmary last Thursday. / Evening Post

DEAF AND DUMB ATTACKER COULD FACE PRISON TERM
A deaf and dumb man could face jail for attacking his elderly neighbors in their home after downing eight cans of cider. Robert Brooks, 47, admitted assaulting John and Janice Miller, with Mr. Miller, who had recently endured a major heart operation, resorting to brandishing an axe and an air rifle to try to get the defendant out of his house. Brooks, said his lawyer, had apparently become annoyed over some gardening work Mr. Miller had carried out on a communal area near his home on August 4. / Daily Mail

DEAF TO GET EMERGENCY ADVICE
The deaf and hearing-impaired will get potentially life-saving advice from a DVD on emergency planning launched today, Civil Defence Minister John Carter says. The DVD was captioned and information was provided in sign language. "Public education is essential to ensure New Zealand is resilient to the number of natural hazards we are vulnerable to including earthquakes, tsunami, volcanic activity and weather related emergencies," Mr Carter said. / Stuff.co.nz

But even at that volume, the mix of rap and heavy metal from Rage Against the Machine reverberates through the 19-year-old’s Mississauga home. Parents of today’s teens may have good reason to be concerned. She's participated in the school band, is a cheerleader, took dance classes for years, played softball with the Lady Wildcats and has even squeezed in a weekend job at Paisley's Steakhouse in Big Creek for the past four years. The Deaf Camp Picnic, at one time a prominent event on Aspen's entertainment calendar, returned Sunday, setting the stage for even bigger things next year. The Aspen Camp of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (yes, its name has changed since the last picnic took place at least a decade ago) is in the midst of not only rejuvenating the popular fundraising event, but expanding its facilities and its programming. CSD, one of the nation's largest relay and human service organizations for deaf and hard of hearing people, began renovations and preparations to open a new contact center in Sioux Falls, S.D., later this year. The contact center is part of a two-year project that calls for a nationwide awareness campaign and marketing initiative that combines subsidized broadband, technology training, and specialized equipment -- among other things -- for a targeted populace of 200,000 deaf and hard of hearing people. / CSD

CENTER OF THE DEAF FILLING NEW, PROFITABLE NICHE
Knoxville Center of the Deaf's new role in deaf-hearing telecommunications could translate into a substantial amount of money. On Monday, KCD became a "queue" for New York City-based Video Relay Service provider LifeLinks -- meaning that when deaf callers, or hearing people who are calling a deaf person, go through KCD for the call, KCD gets a portion of the call's cost. Now, for each caller who goes through KCD's KCDVRS.TV channel to make a VRS call, KCD receives 18 percent of the federal subsidy. / Knoxville News Sentinel

Founded in Dallas in 1975, the Deaf Action Center was established to eliminate barriers for the deaf and hard of hearing. Was it a meltdown or misinterpretation? Whatever it was, Oscar-winning diva Marlee Matlin spent part of Thursday [July 22] on Twitter trying to downplay a stormy appearance at an event associated with the Miss Deaf International pageant in Las Vegas. In town for appearances associated with the World Deaf Expo, Matlin had just finished taping an interview with a TV reporter in a Sands Expo ballroom. Matlin's demeanor switched from upbeat to icy when she was approached by Bonita Leek, a top executive with Miss Deaf International. / Las Vegas Review-Journal

RETIRED TEACHER PUTS HEART (AND HANDS) INTO HIS WORK
John Roy Wilson would hesitate to use his name in the same sentence as Pablo Picasso or Michelangelo Buonarroti. But all summer he has been been channeling the spirit of these great artists in an effort to inspire students at the Oregon School for the Deaf. The Salem resident is creating a mural in an outdoor passageway that students use daily. He spends most days on a portable scaffold, painting the 21-by-11-foot wall. / Statesman Journal

When American Sign Language storyteller Kathy MacMillan saw her audience for the “Signs Under the Sea” presentation at the Taneytown branch of Carroll County Public Library July 21, she had to do some quick recalculation. The children who showed up for the “all ages” session ranged in age from 9 months to 6 years old. “For the summer programs, it’s usually more school-age,” she commented. MacMillan smoothly shifted to the younger age group, as she spent the session using American Sign Language to present a look at the world of underwater animals. / Carroll County Times

Zach Kerger’s life has been about adaptation. Deaf since age three, Kerger had to learn not only how to communicate with others but how to adapt to a hearing world. “My first day at Prattville High, I was very nervous,”?Kerger said through his interpreter Shay Hicks. “I was embarrassed because I was deaf. But that was before I became involved with cheerleading. I’ve always been social.” Kerger said he wanted to be involved in something competitive. “I wanted to prove that a deaf person could be an athlete,” said Kerger. / The Wetempka Herald

STUDY: NASCAR POSES MAJOR HEARING LOSS RISK

NATIONAL EMPLOYMENT SURVEY NEEDS YOUR HELP!

Hello, many of you have responded to my previous advertisements for the National DETS survey, but the study needs more responses to be useful to both deaf and hard of hearing communities. Allow me to explain.

My name is James Schiller and I am a faculty member at Gallaudet University, Department of Social Work, and a Doctoral candidate at Walden University, School of Health and Human Services. This study is the basis for my Dissertation in Social Policy and Planning.

If you are deaf or hard of hearing, and currently employed, I invite you to take part in research examining how technology is associated with the employment of deaf and hard of hearing people. The purpose of this research is to equip social policy makers, programs, educators, and funding sources with current data so they can continue providing valued resources to deaf and hard of hearing communities. A link will take you to the web survey at the end of this message,.

Risks and Benefits of participating in the Study: The survey is confidential and anonymous. There may be some questions that are uncomfortable to answer. Participants are free to skip those questions or exit the study at any time. The potential benefit of participating in this study is updating the body of knowledge about deaf and hard of hearing people in the United States.

Compensation: While some organizations have agreed to advertise this study, all funding supporting the study is my own. This study relies on volunteers to submit the survey. There is no compensation for participating in this study. This study is approved by Walden University and Gallaudet University IRB committees.
