LAWSUIT HIGHLIGHTS HEALTH CARE DIFFICULTIES FOR THE DEAF
The U.S. Department of Justice is suing a Florida doctor and his medical practice for discrimination after allegedly immediately dropping as patients a deaf couple after learning they planned to sue a local hospital for failing to provide a sign language interpreter in the emergency room. In a case that highlights the struggles the hearing impaired sometimes face in finding adequate health care, the suit against Dr. Hal Brown and Primary Care of the Treasure Coast of Vero Beach, Fla., alleges that the doctor and the medical practice violated the Americans with Disabilities Act. / The Republic

The Pennsylvania School for the Deaf has been named as a defendant in a civil suit accusing the Philadelphia-based educational institution of violating the Americans with Disabilities Act for allegedly firing a former teacher because she requested special accommodations due to her medical conditions. Joanne Webb-Barnum, of Sicklerville, N.J., filed suit against the school on July 31 in federal court in Philadelphia. She alleges she was terminated last July after going out on medical leave less than six months earlier for treatment of her disabilities. / Pennsylvania Record

HENDERSON SETTLES COMPLAINT INVOLVING POLICE AND DEALINGS WITH THE DEAF
The city of Henderson and the U.S. Department of Justice reached a settlement Monday after receiving complaints about the Police Department’s dealings with the deaf. According to officials, the complaints, filed under the Americans with Disabilities Act, alleged that the Henderson Police Department was not providing sufficient access to sign language interpreters or other aids when dealing with the deaf or hard of hearing. When asked if they would be willing to resolve the complaints voluntarily, the city of Henderson readily agreed. / Las Vegas Review-Journal

SPRINGFIELD TO HONOR DEAF MAN FOR SAVING FAMILY FROM BURNING HOME
Edward Williams stood outside an unfamiliar house along West Rolling Road, desperately banging on the front door as the top of the home became engulfed in flames. For about seven minutes, no one answered. It was near 4:45 a.m. and the screen door was locked — signs that led Williams to believe people were inside, maybe even still sleeping. His fist hurt from pounding and he could feel the sweltering heat of the inferno, but he persisted. / Daily Times

FOX40 VIEWERS BUY DEAF MAN A BIKE AFTER THIEF TOOK HIS

After our story aired on Monday, dozens of viewers called and e-mailed the FOX40 newsroom asking if they could help./ FOX40

ALUMS, PRESERVATIONISTS FEAR CASPER DEAF-SCHOOL DEMOLITION
The former Wyoming School for the Deaf is more than just an old building to some. To Dan Frazier, who attended the school in the ‘80s, it was a life-changing experience. Julianne Orth, an alumna from the 1970s and ’80s, described learning sign language and playing sports on the playground. They, other alumni and the Casper Historic Preservation Commission believe its future is in jeopardy, though, and are attempting to garner enough support to save it. / Billings Gazette

DEAF PUPILS SUE GOVERNMENT OVER 'ABUSE COVERUP'
Former pupils from one of the country's two specialist deaf schools are suing the Government over alleged historic abuse they say was "condoned and covered up" by authorities. The former students say the Kelston School for the Deaf in Auckland failed to stop violence being committed against them when they were children and have outlined assaults they say include beatings, broken arms and a girl being thrown into a pool. The Ministry of Education has agreed to consider an out-of-court process to settle the claims, however at least one family wants to see the accused held accountable in court. / Stuff.co.nz

DOCTORS TO GIVE DEAF BOY EARS GROWN FROM HIS OWN RIBS
A boy born deaf and without any ears will grow a set from his own ribs. Surgeons will use 8-year-old Kieran Sorkin’s cartilage to build a pair of ears and graft them on to the side of his head. His birth condition, microtia, affects just one in 100,000 babies on both sides of the head and left Kieran with only small lobes where his ears should be. Kieran’s hearing is improving gradually thanks to several operations and a hearing aid anchored to his bone, but all he wants is a pair of ears so he looks like other children in the playground. / London Evening Standard

DEAF MAN BARELY ESCAPES HOUSE FIRE
The first warning Bernard Rachinski had that something was wrong was when the doorbell light in his bedroom flicked on and woke him up at 1 a.m. Tuesday. Rachinski, 64, is deaf. He rents a room on the second floor of a house in Saskatoon. As he got dressed and went downstairs to see who could be at the door, he smelled smoke. When he got to the bottom of the stairs, the smoke was too thick to go much further. That's when he saw the fire in the doorway, which had shorted out the doorbell. / The Star Phoenix

DEAF SOCIETY HEARTBROKEN BY BUILDING'S DEMOLITION
Carol King remembers sewing the curtains for the Deaf Society of Canterbury's building in Armagh St decades ago. This afternoon, she watched with tears in her eyes as the same curtains were put in a rubbish skip. ''It's pretty emotional to see it go,'' King told The Press. ''I wanted to run in and save the curtains.'' Dozens of members of Christchurch's deaf community gathered today as their ''home of the last 50 years'' was torn down in front of them. The centre, built in 1964, was badly damaged in the February 2011 earthquake. / Stuff.co.nz

COMMON DEVICES ALLOW DEAF-BLIND TO COMMUNICATE WITH THE WORLD
Jackie Broussard was born deaf. She had inherited the genetic condition called Usher syndrome, which not only causes deafness, but often robs people of their sight later in life, too. That’s what happened to Broussard. “My vision started to fade really fast,” Broussard said. Because she communicated with sign language, approaching blindness threatened to isolate her in a world turned dark and silent. Today, Broussard is anything but isolated. / The Advertiser

USD STUDENT AIMS TO EDUCATE DEAF IN EAST AFRICA
Many of us tend to take speaking and hearing for granted, until we lose the ability to do either. So, imagine the challenge of pitching a business idea in sign language. USD is a far cry from Burundi in East Africa, where Isidore Niyongabo lost his hearing at the age of 10 after suffering from spinal meningitis, a disease many people die from in Africa, he says speaking through an interpreter. MASCOT: THE ARKANSAS SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF LEOPARDS
It can be easy at first to assume that the Arkansas School for the Deaf (Little Rock) and a world famous British metal band from the 80s have a connection. It's actually just a coincidence - one that makes this school one of the most recognizable in the nation. At ASD they are the Leopards. So when it's spoken in its entirety, the school and mascot name combo ends with Deaf Leopards, eerily similar to Def Leppard. / MaxPreps
