ARIZONA SCHOOLS FOR DEAF, BLIND IN UPHEAVAL
This spring, students at the Arizona State Schools for the Deaf and the Blind gathered rubber ducks and a coffin and staged elaborate protests with a goal of forcing a face-to-face conversation with Superintendent Robert Hill. At one protest, the students, many of them deaf, took to the sidewalks with signs urging passing cars to “honk loud.” They made masks of Hill’s face and held a pseudo-funeral, “burying” the administrator who they said had buried them with his disregard. They didn’t get what they wanted. Hill is still there. / The Republic

185-YEAR OVERDUE BOOK REMINDS COMMUNITY OF BOND BETWEEN CENTRE, KY. SCHOOL FOR DEAF
No one likes paying library fines, least of all the one incurred by a Centre College library book recently found in a desk at Jacobs Hall Museum on the campus of Danville’s Kentucky School for the Deaf. The book, which has the date “December, 1828″ scrawled on its inside cover, is unofficially 185 years overdue. At the Grace Doherty Library’s current overdue rate of 10 cents per day, the fine easily exceeds $6,000. / KyForward.com

DEAF CAMP TURNS 40, CONTINUES STRONG
For 40 years, the Indiana Deaf Camp has provided a fun experience for deaf children, plus their hearing siblings and children with deaf parents. On Sunday, the camp marked this anniversary with a special ceremony. Entitled “40 Years of Joy and Grace,” the ceremony highlighted the efforts of camp co-founders Grace Nunery and Joyce Smith to launch a deaf camp during a time when there were no closed-caption televisions, no emails or texts. The camp — first for adults — came to fruition in 1973 with over 80 attendees participating. / Stacey Page Online

KANSAS COMMUNITY TO LEARN SIGNING TO COMMUNICATE WITH DEAF CHILD
Residents in the north-central Kansas town of Courtland in Republic County are getting the chance to learn sign language so they can better communicate with a young hearing-impaired resident. The parents of 4-year-old Brandt Carlgren say they discovered their son was deaf when he was four weeks old. The Carlgrens say they immediately learned how to sign. / KAKE

TEXTING 911 AN OPTION FOR SOME IN MONROE COUNTY
It is now possible for some to contact emergency personnel in Monroe County without uttering a word. Thanks to a program launched last week called “Text to 9-1-1”, the Emergency Communications Department of Monroe County can now hold texting conversations with Verizon customers who cannot communicate via call for whatever reason, said Operations Manager Tina Carson. Sprint, T-Mobile and AT&T are expected to follow by August, 2014, Carson said. / Democrat and Chronicle

"You're scum, man, going after someone like that," said Const. Fabio Marion with the Windsor police financial crimes unit. The lottery scam began in March 2012. BREE SPROULE OFF TO DEAF OLYMPICS WITH TEAM CANADA
For most of her young life, volleyball player Bree Sproule has been a rarity in the small community of Oyama. She was the only deaf player on her school and club volleyball teams and the only deaf kid of six siblings. But over the past year Sproule, 19, has been hanging with people much like her. TECHNOLOGY THAT LETS DEAF PEOPLE HEAR HAS A DOWNSIDE; IT THREATENS SIGN LANGUAGE
Born profoundly deaf, William Mager, a film-maker, gained some hearing in December. It was technical wizardry, not a miracle: a cochlear implant in his head which turns sounds into nerve signals. Switched on in a glossy central London hospital, it prompted “probably the worst day of my life”, he says. Harsh, robotic sounds bombarded his brain. Now things are improving. The noises are becoming “meatier and richer” as his brain learns to interpret the din. / The Economist

JAIL TERM REDUCED FOR MAN WHO STOLE FROM DEAF CARLISLE PENSIONER
Bryan Dance and his son, Steven Dance, pretended to be door-to-door salesmen to gain the trust of their 77-year-old victim, and then fled with £150 ($228 US) cash while she was making them a cup of tea. Bryan Dance, 50, was jailed for six years at the city’s crown court in November last year after being found guilty of burglary. His sentence has now been cut to five years though by judges sitting at London’s Criminal Appeal Court, who said the original term was “excessive." / Times & Star

DEVICE THAT TRANSLATES SIGN LANGUAGE INTO TEXT FOR DEAF
Researchers have developed a novel computer system that enables deaf people to translate gestures used in sign language into text. Using the new technology, people who are deaf or hard of hearing can simply type words and sentences using a keyboard and read those typed to them, researchers said. They stressed that their system is still a work in progress but hope to eventually create a system that is fully functional and reasonably inexpensive. / Business Standard

TWO DEAF MEN OPEN COMICS STORE
Mikey Marts and Craig Herman knew they were destined to be business partners. Since childhood, Marts buried himself in comic books; Herman never stopped collecting sports figures and cards. After three years of research and planning, the two men combined their passions and expertise to open a Riverside store called Sphinx Comics, Cards and Collectibles. What makes their venture unusual is that Marts, 49, and Herman, 46, are totally deaf — and less than 1 percent of all businesses in the country are deaf-owned. / The Press-Enterprise
