FEDS PROBE ROCKVILLE VIDEO COMPANY
The Rockville headquarters of Viable Inc., which provides video interpreting services for hearing-impaired people, was visited by federal investigators recently, and the company is "cooperating fully" with investigators, a Viable spokesman said. Glenn Lockhart said in an e-mail Saturday that federal investigators visited the company's headquarters in June. He referred specific questions to company attorney Timothy Sullivan, who did not return calls seeking comment on the reason for the investigation Monday. READ MORE (The Gazette)

STATE TO CONSIDER NEW TEST FOR TEACHER
The state department of education has responded to the case of Daniela Ioannides, a deaf teacher of American Sign Language at Andover High School whose contract has not been renewed. Ioannides was told on June 23 - the last week of school - that her contract would not be renewed because she has failed to pass the English competency part of the state's teacher certification exam. A SIGN OF APATHY FOR DEAF
Sarah Burke was cooking dinner for her family when police came knocking at her door. As she tells it, the Denver officers kept ignoring the obvious fact that both she and her husband are profoundly deaf and unable to read lips. Police finally asked the couple's son to sign to Burke that she had a bench warrant for allegedly failing to file paperwork related to a 2-year-old misdemeanor case. "Contempt of court" was a concept that the 8-year-old boy couldn't grasp, let alone interpret. READ MORE (Denver Post)

CAT SAVES DEAF WOMAN FROM SALT LAKE CITY FIRE
People in a Trolley Square neighborhood are calling a cat a hero. The animal apparently acted up Sunday morning [July 5] letting a deaf person know that her house was on fire. Elva Petersen says she escaped from that burning building. READ MORE (ABC-4)

SERVICE DOG FOR HEARING IMPAIRED RESCUES TERRIER FROM TRASH BIN
Sadly, it wasn't the first time Animal Services Director Paul O'Neill had heard of a live dog being dumped in a large trash bin and left for dead. But a black terrier mix, aptly named "Indy" after being rescued on Independence Day, owes its life to a service dog for the hearing impaired. READ MORE (Midland Reporter-Telegram)

BHI LAUNCHES 'BETTER HEARING BLOG' FOR PEOPLE WITH HEARING LOSS CONCERNS
The Better Hearing Institute (BHI) yesterday launched a seven topic mega-blog that offers the latest hearing health news and that provides a forum for people to discuss hearing concerns and personal stories and challenges. FRAUDSTERS CONTINUE TO EXPLOIT RELAY SERVICES
Over the last few years, the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) has received thousands of complaints pertaining to scam artists using Telecommunications Relay Services (TRS) to defraud U.S. businesses and consumers. A new twist involves several recent reports of perpetrators of these schemes exploiting auto repair shops by using TRS to request services for a vehicle. The fraudster claims the vehicle has to be shipped to the shop and requests the repairs and shipping fees be charged to a credit card. READ MORE (FBI)

POLICE ACCUSED OF KILLING DEAF SHEPHERD IN ALLEGED FAKE ENCOUNTER
The Bagerji Police on Tuesday allegedly killed a deaf shepherd identified as Shuban son of Shahnwaz Jatoi in an alleged fake encounter in Katcha area near Bagerji. Relatives of the deceased alleged that the police asked the murdered person to stop, but due to his deafness he did not hear the policemen due to which they opened indiscriminate firing on him, leaving him dead on the spot. TEEN SAVES DEAF PARENTS IN STORM
If not for their 15-year-old daughter, Azizan Ahmad, his wife Bashah Bahari and their 11-day-old son may have been seriously injured, or worse. The couple were sleeping blissfully unaware that a storm had ripped away the roof of their home in Kampung Sri Muda, early Sunday. Blissfully unaware because they are both deaf and mute. DEAF SWIMMERS' LAKE CROSSING DELAYED FOR WARMER WEATHER
Brenda Lussier's plan to swim across Lake Ontario has been delayed. A decision was made late Wednesday night to push the start of the crossing to July 22 instead of this Sunday due to lower than normal temperatures in Lake Ontario. DEAF MINISTRY COMES OUT OF CYBER-SPACE
Though he may have a mighty presence vlogging salvation over the Internet, Father Mike Depcik, OSFS, is even more engaging in person. His presence was felt at a Deaf retreat last month in the Lower Mainland. Father Depcik is one of only about a half dozen or so Deaf Catholic priests in the world, and his time is in high demand. CONDUCTOR DIES IN SUICIDE CENTER
Renowned British conductor Sir Edward Thomas Downes has died at the age of 85, after travelling to the assisted suicide centre Dignitas with his wife. He and his 74-year-old wife Joan, who was terminally ill, chose to end their lives at the Swiss centre, their family said in a statement. Sir Edward had a 40-year relationship with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra. "Our father, who was 85 years old, almost blind and increasingly deaf, had a long, vigorous and distinguished career as a conductor," his family said. READ MORE (BBC News)

AIR CANADA PAYS HEARING LOSS COMPENSATION
A ramp coordinator working for Air Canada at Heathrow Airport has been awarded GBP6,000* compensation. Michael Honeker, aged 49, has worked for Air Canada since 1977. In 1998, he was transferred to the ramp baggage area. NEW TAXI FIRM EASES THE RIDE FOR THE DEAF

DEAF HARTLEPOOL GOLFER SCOTT PHILLIPS DEFIES ODDS
A North golfer has been celebrating after winning a regional tournament - despite being stone deaf. Scott Phillips inherited a rare condition from his mum, which caused tumours to grow on the hearing nerve in his ears. After three operations, which left him completely deaf and with severe problems with his balance, the keen sportsman feared he would never pick up a club again. READ MORE (Sunday Sun)

80 PERSONS PROVIDED HEARING AIDS
Spandan, an authorised dealer for Starkey Hearing Aids, in association with The Times of India, organised a free hearing test and evaluation camp on July 11 and 12 for creating awareness about hearing impairment. This was the first such camp in the city. Nearly 150 persons attended the camp. They were tested and evaluated for hearing impairment. As many as 80 persons were provided hearing aids. PEOPLE WITH HEARING DISABILITIES NOW WANT THE RIGHT TO DRIVE
CARE for Belize and other stakeholders are lobbying the Government of Belize to amend the Road and Traffic Act to allow persons who are deaf to qualify for a valid driver’s license. IOWA WEST AWARDS $4.2M IN 2Q
The Iowa School for the Deaf in Council Bluffs has received a $300,000 grant from the Iowa West Foundation for a new science center. STARKEY HEARING FOUNDATION MARKS 25 YEARS OF HELPING
Tonight [July 11], the group will hold its annual fundraising gala in St. Paul, featuring Elton John, Billy Crystal, Gladys Knight and Tony Bennett. Last year's dinner and auction raised $5 million, and the 25-year-old organization credits the event with allowing it to continue providing hearing aids to those who can't afford them. Keith Wann's ASL Comedy Tour 2009-2010

Keith Wann, renowned for his hilarious, sidesplitting comedy performances, is now producing and hosting the ASL Comedy Tour 2009, which will travel the U.S. this year. GILLIES READY TO SHOW SKILLS AT FUTURES GAME
Acceleration has been the key word for Seattle prospect Tyson Gillies this season. And he's done it against the odds. At age 4, Gillies was diagnosed with a hearing impairment that has left him with 30 percent hearing in one ear and 60 percent in the other. Thanks to the use of hearing aids and an ability to read lips that he learned before his impairment had even been diagnosed by doctors, though, Gillies has not let what some would view as a "disability" stop him, on the field or off of it. WORLD DEAF SURFING CHAMPIONSHIPS IN WAIKIKI
It was a day these surfers had been waiting for. "Chris Levitzke-Grey from Australia in the black," boomed a surf contest speaker. While they may not have heard the announcer...these surfers still knew how to put on a good show for the crowd. Even those from down under. And despite living thousands of miles away from each other, it's the universal sign of surfing that brought them to Waikiki beach. All for the 2009 World Deaf Surfing Championships. STRIVING TO INSPIRE
Like most youngsters, Matt Lake will never forget his first trip to Tiger Stadium. Lake met a player that day who made a big impact — Curtis Pride. He was a deaf outfielder who played two seasons with Detroit in the 1990s. Like Pride, Lake was born with a hearing problem. And, like Pride, he wants to inspire others though athletics. His sport is golf and the 24-year-old Lambertville resident will play next week in the United States Deaf Golfers Association National Tournament in Colorado. READ MORE (Monroe News)

Description of Duties:
The Assistant Director for Residential Services is responsible for providing effective leadership for all aspects of the residential program. The first priority for this position is the health, safety and welfare of our students. Expectations for successful performance include, but are not limited to, managing, supervising, and recruiting staff; enforcing the school’s Student Code of Conduct; scheduling student activities in collaboration with the Assistant Director for Instruction, Assistant Director for Administrative Operations, and the Director; coordinating student transportation; responding quickly to unforeseen disruptive events, mishaps, and conflicts involving students and/or staff that take place outside normal work hours; serving as a member of the school’s Leadership Team; helping promote the school to the general public, Local Education Agencies, and the deaf community; organizing Family Learning Weekend; securing ongoing training for staff; and collaboratively developing goals, interventions, and strategies for the School Improvement Plan.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in education, psychology, sociology, or a related field; experience managing programs in a residential setting; and American Sign Language (ASL) basic skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
Preference will be given to applicants who, in addition to meeting the minimum qualifications, possess one or more of the following:
-0 Master’s degree in education, psychology, sociology, or a related field
-1 Georgia educator certification
-2 Three or more years professional, full-time experience managing programs in a residential setting
-3 Experience working with the deaf community and/or in a school for deaf students
-4 Experience successfully managing student behavior and disciplinary issues
-5 Advanced American Sign Language (ASL) skills

Salary/Benefits:
Pay grade 17- Annual salary range $43,063.23 (minimum) to $75,523.31 (maximum) depending on current employment and relevant education/training and work experience. Benefit options include life, disability, dental and health insurance, annual/sick leave, and Georgia State Employees Pension and Savings Plan.
