APPLE, AT&T PARTNER TO ASSIST DEAF WITH iPHONE 4 AND FACETIME
Apple and AT&T have teamed with ZVRS to bring video relay calling for deaf
and hard-of-hearing users via the iPhone 4 and its FaceTime video chat functionality.
Video relay services allow deaf, hard-of-hearing and speech-impaired people
to communicate with hearing people in real-time, via a sign language interpreter.
In addition to hardware, ZVRS makes video relay software for both Macs and PCs.
And with the help of Apple and AT&T, it will now bring its latest software
-- dubbed iZ -- to the iPhone 4. / AppleInsider

FATHER WON'T SUE AFTER DEAF GIRL STRUCK, KILLED
The family of a 15-year-old girl who was struck and killed by an SUV driven
by a man who claimed he hadn't taken his schizophrenia medication will not sue.
An attorney for the family of Dawn Boozer-Carter said the family had planned
to sue Derek Dewitt, 43, who admitted striking the girl and her mother, Tina
Boozer-Carter, 41, and his father, who owned the car. But the attorney said
last Thursday that they are working it out with the insurance companies and
that the family will be compensated for their suffering. / WRTV

DEAF INMATE SAYS FINGERPRINT PROVES HIS INNOCENCE
Through a sign-language interpreter at the Dallas County Jail, Stephen Brodie
cops to all sorts of crimes save the one that put him behind bars for 10 years:
sexual assault of a 5-year-old girl. He insists he is innocent, and there's
support for his claim. A fingerprint at the crime scene matches another man
convicted in the sexual assault of a child. Brodie's confession came during
18 hours of questioning and included admissions to fictitious crimes made up
by investigators to test his credibility. Also, Brodie is deaf and doesn't speak
clearly, but police didn't use an interpreter for about half of their interviews.

COLLEGE FOR DEAF HAS COME A LONG WAY IN 30 YEARS
Considering the school began with a converted military hospital and not much
else, it’s fair to say SouthWest Collegiate Institute for the Deaf has
come a long way in three decades. Current and former students and staff, as
well as a long list of well-wishers were present on campus this past weekend
as SWCID celebrated its 30th reunion. While fun and games were also on the reunion
agenda, the event mainly gave people a chance to reflect on just how far SWCID,
the only self-contained community college for the deaf and hard of hearing the
United States, has come since its first class enrolled in 1980. / Big

OSCAR GRANT VERDICT, OAKLAND RIOT: VIDEO IS KEY
Today, Oriana Bolden sent a video she created in downtown Oakland on Thursday
that gives a very comprehensive view of the reactions of the crowd after the
Oscar Grant / Johannes Mehserle verdict, and the events leading up to the Oakland
riot. The video has some shocking events, foremost being how a deaf woman was
ran over by a police car. It was not clear where at all the police car was going.
We see the angry crowd descend on the police car after it ran over the deaf
woman. Also, the crowd tries to make room for an ambulance to get in to where

TV REVIEW: THE SILENCE
Never, in all the hundreds of thousands of times we went for cigs together,
did Sesame and I witness a brutal gang-related murder. And if we had, I'd like
to think we would have maybe mentioned it to someone, even if it meant 'fessing
up to the smoking. But then I wasn't profoundly deaf, as Amelia is; she has
a difficult relationship with the hearing world, further complicated by the
recent fitting of cochlear implants. / The

INVENTION ALLOWS DEAF TO FEEL SOUND
A North Melbourne product designer is a contender on the world stage for his
invention that enables the deaf to feel sound. Swinburne University industrial
design graduate Jack Allwood, 21, has created the Outer Ear, a non-surgical
alternative to the cochlear implant and hearing aids. Working on a similar principle
to a human eardrum, which receives and translates sound waves into signals that
the brain can interpret, the device is worn between the wrist and the elbow
on the inner forearm. / Mooney

COSTLY COCHLEAR IMPLANTS BEYOND REACH OF MASSES
About one in 1000 babies born in India is profoundly deaf. So, given the nearly
50,000 births in the country per day, the number of fully deaf children would
be incredibly high. But what’s scarier is the cost for the only solution
available to bestow hearing to deaf children. Cochlear implants -- devices that
electronically stimulate the hearing nerve of the cochlea (auditory portion
of the inner ear) to enable people to hear -- cost an exorbitant Rs 5-10 lakh
($10,700 to $21,400 US). / DNA

There is one beggar who comes to my house and I find him extremely irritating.
It is this deaf and dumb man who comes around once every fortnight. Everyone

the certificate that he is deaf and dumb and unable to find suitable work. /
