'DEAFHEADS' MARKED A MILESTONE OF THEIR OWN AT FINAL GRATEFUL DEAD SHOWS
Jeff Rosen went to his first Grateful Dead concert in 1982 just to experience the vibes–deaf since birth, he didn’t know what songs the band was playing, or what lyrics Jerry Garcia and company were singing. Yet he plunged himself into the experience, absorbing the physical vibrations from the music and soaking up the atmosphere in an arena packed with dancing fans. This past weekend at Soldier Field stadium in Chicago, Rosen and about 40 other deaf and hard of hearing fans experienced the Grateful Dead live in a more enhanced way. / The Wall Street Journal

'WAREHOUSED': DEAF STUDENT WINS $1 MILLION SETTLEMENT FROM GRANDVIEW SCHOOLS
The Grandview School District has settled a federal civil rights lawsuit filed on behalf of a deaf student for $1 million, attorneys for the student announced Tuesday. Jose Garcia was basically “warehoused” in special education classes even though he was hearing impaired, not developmentally delayed, Seattle attorney Karen Koehler said in a news release about the settlement, which she called a record in an educational deprivation case. “What happened to Jose Garcia was hideous,” Koehler said. / Yakima Herald

DEAF COMMUNITY OUTRAGED OVER BEATEN MAN
Following the news of a beating and robbery of a deaf man at a Coffee Bean on June 24, some in the deaf community are voicing their concerns about the attack. Riverside native Brazton Burnes described the incident as “really disturbing.” Burnes himself is not deaf, but is a “CODA”–a child of a deaf adult(s). Daniel Davies said,“It’s nothing new to me.” Boswell Burnes, older brother to Brazton, shared Davies’ feelings of disgust and outrage over the incident. / Canyon News

MAN WITH HEARING IMPAIRMENT FILES LAWSUIT AGAINST BONITA HOTEL
A big part of Dianna Druding's job is making sure the deaf and hearing impaired in Southwest Florida are treated fairly. She spends a lot of time at the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Center talking with frustrated people. Druding wasn't surprised about the new federal lawsuit filed in downtown Fort Myers by a hearing impaired man in Broward County. In it, he says the Holiday Inn Express and Suites in Bonita Springs violated the American Disabilities Act because they didn't provide a TTY device when he tried to check in. / NBC-2

DEAF, BLIND CANYON COUNTRY VETERAN GUIDES OTHERS WHO NEED ASSISTANCE
When you’re standing by the curb along the Santa Clarita Fourth of July Parade route Saturday, watch for a local war hero recognized nationally as one of the country’s most outstanding volunteers. It might prove challenging to pick him out of the hundreds of parade participants. He’s unassuming, quiet-spoken, legally blind and legally deaf. His name is James Hogan, retired U.S. Navy petty officer 3rd class, and in February was named America’s 2014 National Veteran Volunteer of the Year. / Santa Clarita Valley Signal

The North Dakota School for the Deaf was filled to overflowing this weekend with former students, faculty and staff as they celebrated the last 125 years. Dr. Connie Hovendick, Superintendent of NDSD gave everyone a warm welcome upon arrival at the Carl F. Smith Building. She graciously made sure everyone signed in and received a commemorative gift. “The celebration of the 125th anniversary of the North Dakota School for the Deaf was an overwhelming success,” Hovendick told the Journal on Tuesday morning. / Devils Lake Journal

JACOB LANDIS IS BICYCLING ACROSS COUNTRY TO RAISE MONEY, AWARENESS FOR COCHLEAR IMPLANTS
By the time Jacob Landis was 10 years old, he had grown totally deaf. A cochlear implant allowed him to be fully functional in the hearing world. Today, he is bicycling across the country to raise awareness about the benefits of cochlear implants for the deaf and hard of hearing and raising money for people who need a cochlear implant but cannot afford it. He will make a stop for a reception at Garden Spot Village on Thursday, July 16, at 1:30 p.m. / Berks-Mont News

GERMAN ATTEMPTS TO BREAK DOWN BARRIERS FOR DEAF IN NORTH KOREA
In a country with zero kindergartens specifically for the deaf, Robert Grund wants to help establish the first — just a small suite of rooms for perhaps a couple dozen kids, in North Korea's capital, Pyongyang, a city of roughly 2.5 million. It's a small step, but Grund, the Pyongyang representative of the World Federation of the Deaf and the city's only full-time deaf foreign resident, sees it as part of a larger push to end isolation for the deaf here by helping them be heard, involved and empowered in projects about them. He appears to be making progress. / The Associated Press

DUCK HEE-LEE, BORN COMPLETELY DEAF, BATTLES THROUGH AT WIMBLEDON
Second seed junior Duck Hee-Lee battled past Marc Polmans in three sets to progress to the third round of the Boys' Singles at Wimbledon on Tuesday, despite being completely deaf. His story is a remarkable one, battling up the world rankings despite being unable to hear line calls or the score from the umpire, instead relying on vibrations and hand gestures. He was once described as an inspiration by Rafael Nadal, praised for "staying on the right path with his strong determination and mental toughness." / Daily Mail

GOING TO A MUSIC FESTIVAL: AN IMPOSSIBLE DREAM IF YOU'RE DEAF OR DISABLED?
With Glastonbury, The Isle of Wight Festival and Download over for another year and Latitude, V Festival, Reading and Leeds around the corner it's safe to say that the UK festival season is in full swing. Boutique festivals, one day city festivals, themed festivals as well as the big favourites there seems to be no end of opportunities to don a flower hair garland, pull on your hunter wellies and join your friends and family in some time away from the pressures of real life. But what if you are deaf or disabled? / The Huffington Post

CARER STOLE $27,000 FROM BLIND, DEAF WOMAN, AGED 103
A woman has pleaded guilty to stealing almost $27,000 from a blind, partially deaf 103-year-old woman she was hired to care for. Michele Bronwyn Kotukutuk Stirling appeared in Perth Magistrates Court on Tuesday charged with one count of stealing as a servant. She had been employed to care for the elderly woman. Between December 2012 and January 2015, she stole $26,963 by unlawfully accessing her client’s bank account. / The Australian

CHARITY STEPPING IN TO HELP DEAF KIDS
More than fifty deaf kids could have their hearing restored if The National Foundation for the Deaf is successful in it's latest fundraiser. But CEO Louise Carroll thinks it is a tragedy that a charity is being forced to step in on behalf of these children, when the Ministry of Health should be footing the bill. According to Carroll, many parents may only receive funding for the hearing aids if their children are failing at school. "Families are buying equipment they can't afford to, they are putting it on their mortgages," she said. / Newstalk ZB

SILENT SHUTTERBUGS: PHOTOGRAPHY PROJECT GATHERS SCENES BY SISTER ISLAND'S DEAF CHILDREN
Jonathan Diaz has no idea what waves sound like, or a horse, for that matter, but the surrealistic beauty of his image “Horse in Lake” is undeniable, and shows a definite awareness of and connection to the elegance of the world around him. JEFFERSON LAB TO HOST CAMP FOR DEAF AND HARD-OF-HEARING YOUTH
Rising fourth- through rising eighth-graders who are deaf or hard-of-hearing have the opportunity this summer to participate in a science camp at Jefferson Lab geared toward their needs. Brita Hampton, the Science Education Administrator at Jefferson Lab, first got the idea for the camp after she took an ASL course. “I started thinking of a way to combine my love of science, my love of teaching and my love of sign language, which is when I brought the idea back to Jefferson Lab,” Hampton said. / Williamsburg Yorktown Daily

TECHNOLOGY BREAKING DOWN BARRIERS BETWEEN DEAF AND HEARING COMMUNITIES
Communication has always been key to opportunity for the deaf community. But technological advances, which have changed the way everyone communicates, and a growing popularity among college students to learn ASL have removed even more obstacles to the deaf community and the hearing community connecting. "Recent technology advances have been very good to bridge gaps between deaf and hearing people," said Christopher Krentz, an English and ASL professor at the University of Virginia, using video-phone technology to speak. / Deseret News National

THANK YOU, DONALD TRUMP FROM PEPLE WHO ARE DEAF OR HARD OF HEARING!
Dear Donald Trump: People who are deaf and hard of hearing need to thank you. Years ago, I contacted you about the horrific captions on the The Apprentice. For example, "Bordeaux" (you know, the small French region where wine is made) was spelled like two animals: "boar" and "doe." Your office staff didn't care when I contacted them, nor did your production team, Mark Burnett Productions. The woman whose job it was to do this told me that I was "stressing her out" by complaining. / The Huffington Post

HEARING LOOP HELPS HEARING IMPAIRED
For those with hearing loss, hearing aids alone sometimes aren't enough. In crowded rooms or in a lecture or a performance, sound interference can keep hearing aids from picking up the right sound. The result can be a jumbled mess of sounds, background noise and confusion. But luckily, there's a solution, and it's coming to the Beloit Public Library: Hearing loops technology will allow sounds to be transmitted from a microphone straight to a hearing aid. / Beloit Daily News

INTERPRETER GIVES VOICE TO DEAF COMMUNITY
There was always a time Battle Creek’s Valoree Boyer could hear the call even when many others could not. It was the call of those who needed to be heard, who needed a voice, who needed to communicate in the only way available to them “It was just fluid throughout my life,” she said. “I have the best job in the world.” For Boyer, 35, and an interpreter for the deaf and hard of hearing since she was 16, there was really no other job for her to do. / Battle Creek Enquirer

GIVING THE HEARING IMPAIRED ACCESS TO TODAY'S WIRELESS DEVICES
Advanced Bionics made two big announcements in the past month – one involving European approval for a device, and the second, perhaps more revolutionary technology – creating hearing capabilities in a world of wireless devices. It’s newest hearing assist device, the Naida CI Q90 EAS, received approval for distribution in Europe, giving people combined access to cochlear implants with electrical stimulation and hearing aid amplification in one device. / SCVBJ

DEAF WEST'S 'SPRING AWAKENING' SETS BROADWAY DATES, THEATER
Deaf West Theater’s well-received production of Tony-winning musical “Spring Awakening” has set the dates for a Broadway run, snapping up the Brooks Atkinson Theater for an 18-week stay. The show snagged a piece of real estate at a time when seemingly every Broadway theater is occupied or has an upcoming booking. The Brooks Atkinson freed up only recently, when the musical “It Shoulda Been You,” which has struggled at the box office since it began performances in the spring, announced it would close in August. / Variety

'THE TRIBE' PULLS US INTO THE WORLD OF DEAF CHILDREN -- AND THEN REPELS US
The Tribe is a brilliant formal achievement that marks Ukrainian writer-director Miroslav Slaboshpitsky as a filmmaker to watch. It takes place at a boarding school for deaf children, with all the roles played by deaf performers; the dialogue is entirely in Ukrainian sign language, and there are no subtitles or narration to translate the conversations for hearing viewers. (Even those schooled in American Sign Language will be baffled.) / Chicago Reader
