ENDORSEMENT

The National Association of the Deaf is holding its biennial conference this week in Kentucky and will be electing a new president. On behalf of Deafweekly, I am endorsing CHRIS WAGNER for the job. I started out supporting his opponent, Sheri Ann Farinha, mostly because I know her and don't know Chris. But as the campaign went on and I read what people said on the candidates' Facebook pages, I was reminded of the old saying, "You can tell a lot about a person by the company they keep." I realized that Sheri attracted the militant deaf people, those who spend all their time blogging and vlogging and pounding out long comments on other people's websites, whereas Chris attracts the deaf community's grown-ups, those who actually DO things. It made me fear that a Sheri Ann Farinha presidency would be marked by divisiveness and contentiousness and pickets and protests over every little issue, whereas a Chris Wagner presidency might see things actually getting done. I was especially encouraged by Chris's pledge to have NAD apply for at least 25 grants each year. NAD always says it doesn't have any money but does very little to change that picture. Chris knows that there is a lot of money available through government, foundation and corporate grants and he wants to ensure that we deaf people get our fair share. Further, I believe that Chris will represent ALL deaf and hard-of-hearing people, whereas Sheri would represent only the born deaf, native ASL users. The deaf community is too small to be encouraging further division. We need to appreciate and respect the full range of deaf people, and I believe Chris feels the same way. Thus I am pleased to support Chris Wagner as NAD president.

DEAF COMMUNITY OUTRAGED BY DIRTY SIGN LANGUAGE BOOK
An online petition has received over 3,600 signatures asking that the book “Super Smutty Sign Language” not be printed because many claim that the book promotes disrespectful attitudes to Deaf culture and American Sign Language (ASL). The book is written by Kristin Henson, a self-proclaimed ASL amateur from Philadelphia. The book comes after a series of YouTube videos where Henson teaches viewers how to sign vulgar phrases, such as, “How much for a blow job?” and “I’ve got 99 problems but a bitch ain’t one.” / The Horn

APACHE ASL TRAILS -- PLEASE READ THE IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT BELOW
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development recently issued a finding that undermines Apache ASL Trails’ ability to fulfill its purpose of providing quality supportive housing to deaf, hard-of-hearing and deaf-blind individuals. This callous and uninformed ruling hurts not only the many current residents who call Apache ASL Trails home, but the many potential future residents who can only dream of a home like Apache. Adding insult to injury, HUD is even insisting that Apache eliminate “ASL” from its name to ensure that all references to deaf culture at the property are eradicated. / Apache ASL Trails

ROCKY MOUNTAIN DEAF SCHOOL GETS APPROVAL TO MOVE FORWARD
The Rocky Mountain Deaf School received the Lakewood City Council’s go-ahead to build a new school at the council’s June 25 meeting, with an 8-3 vote to rezone the land. Voting against the rezoning of the 10-acre plot at 2090 S. Wright St. were council members David Wiechman, Ramey Johnson and Pete Roybal. Because a legal protest has been filed, the council had to pass the ordinance to rezone with a two-thirds majority. / Our Colorado News

DEAF VALLEJO WOMAN RECEIVES APOLOGIES FROM BLOOD CENTER AFTER TURNED AWAY
A blood center apologized to a local woman who was turned away from donating her blood because she is deaf. Wendy Chadd-Guido said she drove by a blood drive bus in Vallejo recently when she decided on a whim to donate blood. The mother of two said she got a pen and paper and wrote down, "I'm deaf. But I would like to donate blood." Chadd-Guido said an attendant wrote down, "We can't do it because if you were to have a reaction and pass out I can't communicate with you. I'm sorry." / Vallejo Times-Herald

NETFLIX LOST ITS COURT CASE AGAINST THE DEAF
Netflix has to provide closed captioning on its online video, according to a court ruling in a lawsuit brought by the National Association for the Deaf. This is interesting for its online ramifications, and also because Ars Technica has an article about it where a law professor redefines the term “going ballistic.” If websites must comply with the ADA, all hell will break loose. Could YouTube be obligated to close-caption videos on the site? (This case seems to leave that door open.) Could every website using Flash have to redesign their sites for browsers that read the screen? / UPROXX

DEAF RIGHT IGNITE DEBATE
A handful of state officials, who spoke at a House Judiciary Committee hearing regarding the Deaf Child's Bill of Rights, said legislation is already in place that covers rights and policies for children with disabilities. But deaf advocates and some legislators disagree. Those who addressed the committee on June 20 included Wilson's deaf community, officials within the Exceptional Children's Division of the Department of Public Instruction, a nonprofit leader, attorney and parent of a child who has moderate hearing loss. Various views on the issue ignited debate. / The Wilson Daily Times

DEAF CONFERENCE EXPECTED TO DRAW THOUSANDS IN LOUISVILLE
The crack of a baseball bat. A vendor yelling "cold beer here!" A roaring crowd on a hot July night. Those are the sounds associated with the ballpark and America's past time. They are also the sounds many people take for granted. Imagine watching a baseball in silence. A group of nearly 1200 deaf or hard of hearing people did just that by attending Tuesday's nights Louisville Bats game. It kicked off the week long National Association of the Deaf conference here in Louisville. / WDRB
