NETFLIX SUED BY DEAF GROUP OVER LACK OF SUBTITLES
Netflix has been sued by the National Association of the Deaf for failing to offer closed-captioning on enough of its streaming content. In a lawsuit filed last Thursday in U.S. District Court for the district of Massachusetts, the NAD alleges that Netflix is in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act by not providing captions for most of its "Watch Instantly" streamed movies and TV shows. The ADA requires that all "places of entertainment" provide "full and equal enjoyment" for people with disabilities, according to the NAD, which is asking the court to declare Netflix in violation of the act and order the company to provide captions on all streaming content. / CNET

SUIT DEMANDS CNN OFFER ONLINE CAPTIONS FOR DEAF
As increasing numbers of Americans get their news online, the owner of CNN.com was accused in an Alameda County lawsuit Wednesday of discriminating against the hard-of-hearing by failing to provide closed captions for videos posted on the Internet. CNN's refusal to offer computer users the captions it provides to its television audience "excludes Californians who are deaf or hard of hearing from a wealth of critical information regarding current events," said the suit, a proposed class action in Superior Court on behalf of the state's hearing-impaired residents. / San Francisco Chronicle

LAWSUIT FILED FOR 2 DEAF DETAINEES AT NC PRISON
Two deaf men being held at a federal prison in North Carolina cannot receive counseling, participate in religious services or do many other things that hearing people can do, because the government has refused to provide them with the specialized interpreters they need, their attorneys say in a lawsuit. The lawsuit was filed Monday against the federal Bureau of Prisons on behalf of Robert Boyd, 56, and Thomas Heyer, 46, who have been held at the prison in Butner since 2008. / The Associated Press

MILWAUKIE WOMAN ACCUSED OF STEALING FROM CHARITY FOR THE DEAF
A Milwaukie woman has been charged with embezzling $1,200 from a charitable organization for the deaf, where she worked as business manager. Melody Anne McDaniel, 46, was arraigned in Multnomah County Circuit Court on charges of first-degree theft and fraudulent use of a credit card. Trial is set for Aug. 4. Meanwhile, she is free on her own recognizance. McDaniel, who is deaf, is accused of stealing $750 in 2009 from World Deaf Timberfest, a Stayton-based nonprofit organization that helps to support Camp Taloali for deaf and hearing-impaired children. / The Oregonian

COLLEGE TO END TRAINING INTERPRETERS FOR THE DEAF
When the ax fell at Seattle Central Community College this week, one of the programs chosen for elimination was the school's interpreter-training program, which trains people to translate for the deaf. Seattle Central Community College President Paul Killpatrick said interpreter training is one of three programs that had a low completion rate, poor track record of job placement and high per-student cost. Supporters of the interpreter program say it is more successful than has been portrayed. / Seattle Times Newspaper

HEARING SPEECH AND DEAF CENTER OPENS HEALTH LIBRARY
Last year, the Hearing Speech and Deaf Center was awarded $100,000 from health and benefits company Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM) to support health literacy programs for the hearing-impaired. Last Thursday the Center celebrated its progress with a ceremonial ribbon-cutting for a new media center. In addition to the media center, Humana’s grant enabled the Hearing Speech and Deaf Center to hire a health advocate to assist the deaf community with health-related issues. / Business Wire

DEAF MAN ATTACKED, ROBBED
Police are looking for the man who attacked and robbed a hearing-impaired man on Tuesday. The unidentified black male struck and robbed 20-year-old Zackary Evan Fisher on South Murray Street and made off with the cash in his wallet, according to McKinney police reports. Fisher told responding police officers that he was jumped and struck by an unidentified black male from behind. The suspect took Fisher's wallet containing approximately $80 in cash and fled the scene, McKinney police Deputy Chief Scott Brewer said. / McKinney Courier-Gazette

MUGSHOT: DEAF WOMAN CHARGED WITH BATTERING HER GRANDMOTHER IN LEHIGH
A 45-year-old Lehigh Acres woman was jailed last Thursday, accused of hitting her 84-year-old grandmother. Anita Ann Perry was charged with battery on a person 65 years old or older. According to a Lee County Sheriff’s Office report, two residents of a 55-plus complex were concerned for the safety of a neighbor “because of what they perceived to be violent arguments between her and her granddaughter.” They also said Perry is deaf and yells at her grandmother, and they can hear banging on the walls when the two argue. / Naples Daily News

DEAF/MUTE TEEN CHARGED WITH MOLESTING BOY, 3
Police arrested a 13-year-old boy who is deaf and cannot speak and accused him of performing a sexual act on a younger child, reports show. The identity of the boy charged with a felony, lewd and lascivious molestation, was redacted off a police report released Monday. According to the report, on May 31 a 7-year-old cousin saw the 13-year-old with his underwear pulled down lying on top of the 3-year-old boy, who also had his underwear pulled down, in a bedroom. The cousin left the room but did not report what she saw, police said. / Daytona Beach News-Journal

POLICE STATION OFFERING INTERPRETATION SERVICE FOR DEAF AND DUMB PEOPLE IN JAIPUR
To ensure deliverance of justice, Jaipur police authorities have been maintaining an interpretation centre for deaf and dumb people to help them to report crime and lodge official police complaints against culprits. Operating since 2004, the initiative has been benefiting 6000-8000 people. DEAF GROUP SHOWS SUPPORT FOR RAPE-SLAY VICTIM
Members of the Cebu Association of the Deaf trooped to Lapu-Lapu City Police Station in Cebu on Friday upon learning of the arrest of the rapists and murderers of 17-year-old deaf-mute Cherame Gitgano. The group went to the police station to show their condemnation for the brutal act. The three suspects, Fiel Pinote, Renante Limpangog and LG Mesa, were arrested Thursday after being identified by a witness. Another man, believed to the crime’s mastermind, is still at large. / ABS-CBN News

PROFOUNDLY DEAF TEACHER CROWNED BEST IN NORTH-EAST
A deaf teacher, described by one of her students as inspirational, has been named the best in the North-East. Noreen Chaplin, who teaches British Sign Language levels one and two and Deaf Awareness at Darlington College, was nominated for Teacher of the Year awards by one of her students. Signature, the awards body and website for British Sign Language, yesterday bestowed Mrs Chaplin with the award. After beating hundreds of other nominations from the region, Mrs Chaplin will represent the North-East at the national finals in November. / Darlington and Stockton Times

DEAF CHARITY ANXIOUS ABOUT TEACHING ROLES
Council bosses have declined to commit to protecting current levels of services for deaf children. Stoke-on-Trent City Council has reduced its number of teachers of the deaf from eight in April 2009 to four. The authority admitted in a freedom of information request submitted by charity the National Deaf Children's Society, that it did not know how many teachers of the deaf it would employ by January. David Heap, regional director at NDCS, said: "It confirmed what we and parents had feared: Support for Stoke-on-Trent's 200 deaf children has been halved." / This is Staffordshire

It is pure agony for Lomagugu Shongwe of Mayiwane, a mother of three children who have speech and hearing impairments and what makes matters worse, they cannot further their studies because their family is too poor and government stopped subsidising their school fees. Online services innovator Nefsis announced last week that Wright State University has implemented its "Deaf Off Drugs and Alcohol" (DODA) long distance treatment counseling using the Nefsis global, cloud-based HD video conferencing service. DODA is a grant-funded project to improve alcohol and drug treatment services for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. Located next to the menu marquee in the drive-through lane at the Culver's in O'Fallon is a giant button that hearing-impaired customers can press to alert employees inside that a deaf customers wants to place an order. These customers are then handed a form so they can fill out their order at the window. LEXINGTON SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF RECOGNIZES LOCAL COMPANIES
High school seniors from Lexington School for the Deaf hosted an Employer Appreciation Day luncheon on June 10 to thank several area companies and organizations for giving internship opportunities, which afforded the students the chance to gain an insight into the workforce. Using fingers and palms, Fred Seitz, 18, signed a thank-you letter he wrote -- speaking with his hands a language he had never heard. The letter was to the board of education during its May 23 meeting, with mother Rose and dad Fred by his side. It was a lengthy letter the senior, afflicted with Goldenhar syndrome and deaf since age 3, could not have written years earlier. $1.75 MILLION GIFT HELPS FUND NEW RESEARCH BUILDING AT NTID
A grant of $1.75 million is being given to the National Technical Institute for the Deaf, a college of Rochester Institute of Technology, to help construct a new building devoted to innovation and research. The grant -- which includes a $250,000 matching challenge -- is from the William G. McGowan Charitable Fund, based in Chicago. It will help construct Sebastian and Lenore Rosica Hall, an $8 million, two-story, 23,000 sq. ft. building expected to be completed in 2013. / RIT News

They've converted a woman into a baseball fan and inspired a peer to become bilingual. And they didn't have to speak a word to do it. That's not to say the Flores twins, Ronnie and Danny, don't talk. But instead of using their tongues, they use their hands, eyes, arms, faces and smiles. Qualification/Education/Experience:
Master’s degree in social service or related field plus 5 yrs supervisory/clinical experience. Provides crisis on call coverage as assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
-- Pro-actively call individuals listed on the company "Hot List"
-- Educate the individual about CSDVRS's product offerings
-- "Sell" the CSDVRS product and features to the individual
-- Convert the "Individual" into a CSDVRS "Customer"
-- End of call should result in the "Customer" placing a confirmation call to CSDVRS audio customer service.
-- Close at least one "verified" customer per hour while working.
-- Maintain up-to-date knowledge on all of CSDVRS's product offerings through a combination of product demonstrations, Tele-Sales meetings, and marketing materials)
-- Transfer all business leads to the Director Internal Ops.

Summary: The Business Account Executive will be responsible for introducing ZVRS to new business customers and residential customers. Also responsible for sharing new exciting products and features with customers who desire to use video relay service in their place of employment by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate supervisors.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
-- Planning and directing sales and service programs to promote new markets, improve competitive position in area, and provide fast and efficient customer service.
-- Prospecting assigned region for new customers.
-- Suggesting and implementing creative and practical methods for selling ZVRS, strengthening client relationships, and increasing visibility.
-- Coordinating aspects of ZVRS marketing efforts.
-- Working with other Business Account Executives to plan and implement state and region-wide events and promotions.
-- Overseeing a group of Z sales specialists within the region
-- Coordinating installations of ZVRS equipment in homes, agencies, and/or businesses through our National Sales Engineers and installation program;
-- Conferring with potential customer to ascertain equipment, supplies, and service needs.
-- Communicating with and submitting regular activity reports to the Senior Sales Director.
-- Performing additional sales related responsibilities and other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience:
-- 1 -2 years of sales experience preferred.
-- Bachelor's Degree in related field strongly preferred.
-- Computer knowledge and Microsoft office

Qualifications:
-- Must have strong knowledge of Telecommunications Relay Service Industry.
-- Must have excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work successfully with a variety of people.
