COURT PAPERS ALLEGE PRINCIPAL TRIED TO COVER UP SEX ASSAULT SCANDAL
For nearly a decade, Sydney Dickerson was the principal for the Hawaii School for the Deaf and Blind. It was under her watch that dozens of students were robbed, raped and even gang raped by other students State taxpayers wound up paying $5.75 million to settle lawsuits linked to the violence, and five students were convicted as minors on sex assault charges. Now, new court records obtained by Hawaii News Now show that school staffers and contractors had asked Dickerson at least half a dozen times since 2006 to investigate sex assault allegations. They alleged that Dickerson either didn't look into them or didn't report the allegations to law enforcement. / Hawaii News Now

FAKE FUNDRAISER LEADS TO SCAM ALERT FROM MICHIGAN SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF
The Michigan School for the Deaf is warning people about a scam involving a young man telling people he's raising money for a trip. Incidents of people being asked for money took place in Warren and Ferndale, where the person that is deaf handed someone a note. "The note said that he plays football for Michigan School for the Deaf and is asking for donations to travel to Washington DC for a game," reads an alert from the Flint school, adding "That young Deaf gentleman is scamming people." / MLive.com

TAXI COMPANY ACCUSED OF DENYING SERVICE TO DEAF WOMAN
A taxi company in Passaic County has been accused by the state Attorney General's office of illegally denying service to a deaf woman who was using a telecommunications relay system to get service during a snowstorm. The state has filed a civil complaint in Superior Court in Passaic County accusing Clifton Taxi and Limousine of violating the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination by denying service on the basis of a disability, Acting Attorney General Robert Lougy said in a statement. / NJ.com

When Iromilson “Ro” Centeio came to America from his native Cape Verde, he was 13 years old. Not only could Centeio not speak English when he immigrated to Dorchester, he couldn’t communicate at all. Centeio is deaf, and had little formal schooling, leaving him with no common language to get his feelings or points across to anyone in his life. On Friday, Centeio graduated from the Learning Center for the Deaf. Not only can Centeio now communicate with his family and friends, he became president of his class. / MetroWest Daily News

DEAF WOMAN MISSING AFTER NIGHT OUT IN GLASGOW
A deaf woman has gone missing after a night out at a Glasgow bar. Kirsty Aitchison, 30, from Robroyston, who is a mother-of four, was last seen leaving the Campus bar in Sauchiehall Street at about 03:00 on Sunday. She is understood to communicate with sign language and had been attending a deaf event at the bar. Police have now issued an appeal in British Sign Language to encourage members of the deaf community to contact police with information. / BBC News

CHANNEL 4 TO AIR LIVE FOOTAGE OF DEAF PEOPLE HEARING FOR THE FIRST TIME
Channel 4 is to broadcast live the moment that a group of deaf people are given the power of hearing for the first time, in what the broadcaster says will be a groundbreaking documentary. The program will follow a group of profoundly deaf people who are preparing to undergo surgery to have cochlear implants fitted. Each of the participants will have a miniature electronic device fitted, replicating the function of their damaged inner ear, but the implants will not be activated until the cameras are rolling. / The Telegraph

COLCHESTER'S FIRST CAFE WITH DEAF WAITRESS CATERS TO BSL USERS
Deaf customers at a Colchester café will now be able to sign for their order. Pete Hope, director of the Pavilion Café, wishes to establish the first commercial eatery in the town where staff can communicate with deaf people using British Sign Language (BSL). Each Thursday, deaf waitress Jessica White, 21, will man the counter. The inclusive venture will be evaluated monthly and subject to a successful trial, will continue. / Daily Gazette

CLAIMS BIRKDALE DEAF SCHOOL IS STILL BLIGHTED BY YOBS
A town centre councillor has claimed that the Birkdale deaf school site was not properly secured. Birkdale School for Hearing Impaired Children, which has been vacant since 2003, has become an eyesore in recent years. Yobs torched the Lancaster Road building in 2010, and residents have repeatedly complained about its poor condition. Now Clr Tony Dawson has claimed that contractors recently failed to secure the site properly. He also claimed that yobs intent on anti-social behaviour were still able to access the site. / Southport Visiter

MARGATE DEAF SCHOOL ABUSE: MP CRAIG MACKINLAY SEEKS URGENT REFORMS
Abuse at a school for the deaf was so severe that urgent reform of care is needed for the "extremely vulnerable," an MP's report has said. The Royal School for Deaf Children and its post-16 unit Westgate College in Margate, Kent, closed last December. Mobile-phone footage later showed carers drinking, stripping and swearing in front of vulnerable residents. Claims in the report by local MP Craig Mackinlay include staff taking "Motability cars on booze cruises." / BBC News

PRIEST BORN DEAF URGES SACRAMENTS FOR CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES
No matter how complicated it is to do, all children have a need and a right to religious education and access to the sacraments, said a priest who was born deaf and became blind 16 years ago. Opening the Year of Mercy jubilee celebration for the sick and persons with disabilities, Redemptorist Father Cyril Axelrod insisted sign language, tactile sign language and body language are "gifts of the Holy Spirit" meant to help Christians share the Gospel with all people. / Catholic News Service

NPA DENY BUNGLING DEAF MAN'S CASE
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has denied that it failed to place back on the roll the matter of a deaf man whose attacker was let go without being prosecuted. This was after the victim’s father found out last week when he went to court that the case was still not on the roll, despite promises by the NPA to ensure his deaf son received justice. The Star had reported how the prosecutor removed the matter from the roll, saying it would be difficult to prosecute. / IOL.co.za

WORLD DEAF TEAM FORCED TO AXE 8 OVER BUDGET
The Deaf Athletics Association of Kenya (DAAK) on Tuesday dropped eight athletes from the squad travelling to the World Deaf Athletics Championship in Bulgaria. The decision to reduce the travelling contingent from 31 to 23 was reached after the Ministry of Sports, Culture and Arts ordered the association to cut the number and the team ’s training camp period to fit into a constricted budget. DAAK subsequently presented a shorter list with major casualties being athletes participating in disciplines least likely to produce medals. / Citizen TV

MINISTER CHECKS IN WITH DEAF FOOD COURT CLEANER
Singapore’s Minister for Social and Family Development Tan Chuan-Jin says country can and should do more to treat people with special needs with empathy and respect. The comments come after a video of a female customer verbally abusing a deaf food court cleaner was widely circulated online across the island and region. Tan visited the suddenly-famous Png Lye Heng on Friday, later telling his Facebook followers the man’s gracious reaction to the public incident was a testament to his character. /hrmasia

A Catholic priest who serves the Archdiocese of Boston is ministering to the deaf community in Cumberland County. Father Shawn Carey led Retreat Day for deaf Catholics in Mechanicsburg. Father Carey is one of 14 deaf priests worldwide. The entire retreat is held in ASL with no voice interpretation. It gives the deaf hope to continue to practice their faith despite not always being able to communicate in a church. / Fox43.com

Patricia Sebranek and Bob Kamasky were every bit as involved in the Mass at St. John the Evangelist Parish last Sunday morning as celebrants the Rev. Joe Dorner and Deacon Tom Mahoney. But Sebranek and Kamasky didn’t utter one word as they performed their duties. Even in silence, their roles were integral — Sebranek as a sign-language interpreter and Kamasky as an interpretive reader and drum player. IMPLANT RESTORES SOME HEARING FOR WOMAN WHO WENT DEAF AFTER MENINGITIS, STROKE
About three years ago, Monroeville resident Donna Mahaffey started out her day the same way she had for the past 22 years as a bus driver, but before that day was over, her life would be changed forever. Donna, now 62, had finished her first run of the day and was about to take her break before her second run, but she never made it. The last thing she remembers was having back pains and being taken to a hospital. She awakened two days later after being in a coma. “I woke up and my world was silent,” she said. / Tribune-Review

Sandra Hein, an instructional aide at the Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah School District, waits on the steps of the high school every morning and greets 19-year-old Brittany Eberle with a soft touch on the arm. Eberle cannot see, hear or speak, but the woman's family said Hein understands her all the same, picking up on everything from a groan to a gentle smile. Eberle, who is deaf-blind, has made strides in her development with the help of Hein, and the two have developed a bond that brings to mind that of Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan. / WRAL

Nyle DiMarco was invited to perform the National Anthem in ASL for game four of the 2016 NBA championship in Cleveland before the Cavaliers took on the Golden State Warriors. The huge honor had all eyes on DiMarco as he stood on the court and performed the “Star-Spangled Banner” entirely through sign language as the crowd sang along. She’s on the women’s United States Deaf Soccer Team and will head to Salerno, Italy, later this month to compete in the World Deaf Football Championship — the Deaf World Cup. Cano, who is from Woodhaven, has had hearing issues since birth. She wears a cochlear implant in her right ear and uses a hearing aid in her left.
