NOT EVERYONE IS CHARMED BY THOSE VIDEOS OF BABIES HEARING FOR THE FIRST TIME
Comments on YouTube videos of babies hearing for the first time are mostly positive. People ooh and ahh over the child's responses to their mother's voice. But every video has some detractors. It would be easy to attribute the down votes to the immutable laws of the internet, which state "For everything, there is a hater." But there is more behind those down votes than just random negativity: It's a fight for a culture and a people who feel under attack. / The Daily Dot

DEAF MINISTRY INTEGRAL TO GREEN BAY CHURCH
Patricia Sebranek and Bob Kamasky were every bit as involved in the Mass at St. John the Evangelist Parish last Sunday morning as celebrants the Rev. Joe Dorner and Deacon Tom Mahoney. But Sebranek and Kamasky didn’t utter one word as they performed their duties. Even in silence, their roles were integral — Sebranek as a sign-language interpreter and Kamasky as an interpretive reader and drum player. Evangelist has served the deaf community for many years. / Green Bay Press Gazette

IMPLANT RESTORES SOME HEARING FOR WOMAN WHO WENT DEAF AFTER MENINGITIS, STROKE
About three years ago, Monroeville resident Donna Mahaffey started out her day the same way she had for the past 22 years as a bus driver, but before that day was over, her life would be changed forever. Donna, now 62, had finished her first run of the day and was about to take her break before her second run, but she never made it. The last thing she remembers was having back pains and being taken to a hospital. She awakened two days later after being in a coma. “I woke up and my world was silent,” she said. / Tribune-Review

ASDB LEADER SEEKS TO RAISE EXPECTATIONS FOR STATE'S DEAF. BLIND STUDENTS
As the Arizona State Schools for the Deaf and the Blind began searching for a new leader, the agency was pulled in several directions. Questions of whether the new superintendent should have a background in deaf or blind education were pitted against the need to have a leader with administrative experience who could manage the $53 million budget and ensure the school complies with state standards. It turned out one candidate — Annette Reichman — could meet all of the school’s needs. / Tuscon.com

INSTRUCTIONAL AIDE WORKS WITH DEAF-BLIND WOMAN
Sandra Hein, an instructional aide at the Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah School District, waits on the steps of the high school every morning and greets 19-year-old Brittany Eberle with a soft touch on the arm. Eberle cannot see, hear or speak, but the woman's family said Hein understands her all the same, picking up on everything from a groan to a gentle smile. Eberle, who is deaf-blind, has made strides in her development with the help of Hein, and the two have developed a bond that brings to mind that of Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan. / WRAL

DEAF RAPPER SIGNMARK SIGN/SINGS FOR SOCIAL INCLUSION
A deaf rapper? When Marko Vuoriheimo told his friends and family that he wanted to pursue a career in music he was met with everything from raised eyebrows to outright ridicule. “My teachers, relatives and some of my friends … didn’t really believe in my career at all,” said the Finnish native, whose stage name is Signmark. “But I thought, I’ll still get there and I want to … give an opportunity for this dream of mine.” And so he did. / The World Bank

AT HUNTINGTON, DEAF, GAY CHARACTER IS FOCUS OF POWERFUL NEW CRAIG LUCAS DRAMA
There is a lot to take in during the few scenes of “I Was Most Alive With You,” but like the title character in the “Book of Job,” an ancient writing alluded to continuously throughout the play, we can persevere and maintain our faith. THIS IS WHAT IT'S LIKE LISTENING TO MUSIC AS A DEAF PERSON
Anyone who thinks American Sign Language isn't hip-hop needs only to look at the videos of ASL interpreter and performer Amber Galloway Gallego. She turned A$AP Rocky and Kendrick Lamar's "Fuckin' Problems" into a fist-thrusting anthem at Lollapalooza 2013; she took Eminem's "Rap God" and translated his dense, record-breaking rhyme patterns into a complex flurry of hand signs. / Mic

NYLE DIMARCO SIGNS 'STAR-SPANGLED BANNER' AT NBA FINALS
Nyle DiMarco was invited to perform the National Anthem in ASL for game four of the 2016 NBA championship in Cleveland before the Cavaliers took on the Golden State Warriors. The huge honor had all eyes on DiMarco as he stood on the court and performed the “Star-Spangled Banner” entirely through sign language as the crowd sang along. He follows in the footsteps of Marlee Matlin, who has performed the National Anthem in ASL at three Super Bowls, including this past February. / Gossip Cop
