ONLINE CAPTIONING IS UNDER ATTACK!
Remember the hard-fought victory of getting the 21st Century Video Accessibility Act made into law so we’d be able to have full access to online videos? That law is now at risk at being gutted massively, and made toothless. Customer Electronics Association (CEA), a coalition of over 2,000 corporations, launched a massive assault on the CVAA (a law recently passed that’d have required the majority of online videos to be captioned if previously broadcast on TV). When you take a look at who their members are, I’m very much confident you’ll get pissed off, and say HELL NO! / Don Cullen

DEAF COMMUNITY TELLS COUNCIL: KEEP SERVICES IN CANTON
Members of the deaf community pleaded with City Council on Monday night for help in keeping their services and advocacy based in Canton. The deaf residents, both from the city and other parts of Stark County, told council that they are concerned about the impact of proposed changes related to the services provided to the deaf community locally. “Please do not fail our deaf community,” said Rolland Doudt. / Canton Repository

FRIENDS RALLY AROUND FORMER LOCAL COUPLE WHOSE SON WAS KILLED
On April 14 everything changed for former Waco residents Joseph and Eva Keith. Their son, Timothy, 5, was killed when a taxi hit him while the family was visiting New York City. The Keith's are deaf, as was their son. After attending Texas State Technical College, the Keiths recently moved to Washington, D.C. and were on a day trip to New York City when the accident occurred. Six weeks later, the deaf community of Central Texas held a fundraiser Saturday at the Lion's Den in Waco to help the family with funeral expenses and to remember the energetic little boy. / KWTX

FIFTH-GRADERS WIN NATIONAL SCIENCE PRIZE, $10,000 EACH
The task for the fifth-graders was intimidating: Come up with a science project analyzing how a current technology could be used 20 years in the future. Considering all four team members were only 10 years old, that meant thinking ahead more than twice the time they've been alive. What started as a project that focused on how spinal-cord technology might be used to cure hearing loss turned into a personal quest that forged strong friendships. And led to big success. / The Orange County Register

MARYLAND SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF GRADS READY FOR NEW CHALLENGES
For the seniors at the Maryland School for the Deaf, it has been a journey taken together. Years of taking the same classes, and even living together in dorms for some, culminated Saturday morning when 38 graduating seniors received their diplomas at the school's 144th commencement. "I'm a little anxious and nervous," Kyle Andrew Blakely, 19, from Silver Spring, said through a sign-language interpreter. / Frederick News-Post

EARLY LANGUAGE EXPOSURE AIDS DEAF
Most agree that the earlier you expose a child to a language, the easier it is for that child to pick it up. The same rules apply for deaf children. According to a new study, early exposure to sign language in addition to spoken language for all deaf children is the best way to maximise linguistic and cognitive skills to overcome any delays or difficulties due to deafness. La Trobe University’s Dr Adam Schembri -- Director of the National Institute for Deaf Studies and Sign Language -- and colleagues examined the effects of age of acquisition in deaf adults who use British Sign Language (BSL). / Science Alert

DEAF PEOPLE NEED TO LEARN TO COMMUNICATE WITH THOSE WHO CAN HEAR
It is important for deaf people and those who can hear to interact so that they can learn how to communicate with each other. Ellen Arthur, a 15-year-old deaf girl, told the Independent that it was "very important" for her to mix outside of the hard of hearing community so that interaction skills can be picked up. She has undergone years of speech therapy which has enabled her to be articulate, which leads to many people being surprised that she is deaf. / Mediplacements

NO BIRTHDAY PRESENTS -- HELP OUR SCHOOL INSTEAD
A surgeon who spent part of his career helping deaf people in Africa has used his 100th birthday to help them once more. Pioneering ear, nose and throat doctor Peter Roland became the first ENT specialist in Uganda in 1957, and during his time there discovered that deaf children had no access to education. His determination to correct this led him to arrange for Ugandan teachers to come to the UK to learn how to teach children with hearing impairments - and the founding of the Uganda School for the Deaf, which opened in 1959. / Cambridge News

LOVE BEING DEAF
At 36, I am a programmer who is Deaf, cannot speak a whit, use American Sign Language, and I love it. I am married to a lovely Deaf wife and have a 5-year-old son who brings me nothing but joy. If I attempted speech, zoo keepers will storm out, thinking a chimp just broke out of its Oakland Zoo cage. Suffice to say, I never speak and never wear any assistive hearing devices… and yet, you may think, life is good. / Productivity Geek

STUDENTS DEVELOP PORTABLE SIGN-LANGUAGE TRANSLATOR
Sign Language is definitely a boon to deaf people when it comes to communicating with each other, or with non-deaf people who are trained in the system. If a hearing person doesn’t regularly deal with the deaf, however, then there's an obvious communication barrier. In order to address that situation, a group of engineering technology and industrial design students from the University of Houston have created MyVoice - a prototype American Sign Language (ASL) translator. / Gizmag

HELEN KELLER IN LOVE: A NOVEL OF UNTHINKABLE ROMANCE
When the publisher of Helen Keller in Love by Rosie Sultan asked if I’d like to receive a review copy of the book, I jumped at the chance. The book is fictional, but includes many details from Keller’s life. The author uses those details as a background to her story, imagining what it might have been like to be blind, deaf, and in love. While most women during the early 1900s could imagine a romantic relationship, so long as it was handled with propriety, the idea of a love affair would be entirely different for someone like Helen. DEAF COMEDY JAM
Deaf comedy hasn’t had a lot going for it ever since black people ran it into the ground in the 90s. There’s that episode of Seinfeld where Rob Schneider pretends to be deaf, but that’s kind of it, and I’m not sure deaf people think that counts. Andrew Fisher is trying to end the deaf-comedic world’s long silence by telling jokes in American Sign Language and then having an interpreter say them out loud, which produces a weird, slightly staggered laughter between the hearing and nonhearing members of the audience that’s arguably as funny as the jokes themselves. / VICE

Traditionally, the film studios trot out their big movies starting on Memorial Day to take advantage of all the kids and families looking for something to do. HAND SIGNALS AID DEAF SWIMMER'S OLYMPIC BID
Born almost completely deaf, Marcus Titus has grown used to overcoming obstacles. He has never let his impairment slow him down or stifle his aspirations in or out of the swimming pool. In his latest victory, Titus successfully led a social media campaign that persuaded USA Swimming to allow the use of hand signals in his events at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Omaha, Neb. DEAF PLAYER WILLIAM HOY INSPIRED BASEBALL SIGNALS
When William Hoy broke into the then-major leagues umpires simply yelled "Ball" or "Strike" as they called the pitcher's deliveries. But William Hoy had lost his hearing as a child. Despite that handicap he went on to become a major-league baseball player, the first deaf player in the league's history. As a result, he was given the nickname "Dummy Hoy" -- it was common at that time to refer to a person who couldn't hear as "dumb," a slur unacceptable today. Hoy took it in his stride and although he was only 5 feet 4 inches in height became an excellent center fielder. / Loveland Reporter-Herald
