THE FCC IS ACCUSING THIS COMPANY OF CHEATING THE DEAF
The Federal Communications Commission announced Friday that it will issue a $11.9 million fine against Purple Communications, for allegedly improperly billing a government fund dedicated to providing assistive communication services. In its statement, the FCC said that Purple was reimbursed for providing some of its services to "customers with names that were so clearly false that they could not have been the actual names of eligible users." These names included “sdfsdf cicwcicw,” “ Myname Yourname,” and “Lot$a Money," according to the release. / The Washington Post

Since 1908 the Austine School has been working with students who are deaf and hard of hearing. Now that tradition is slated to come to an end -- but students and staff hope it's not for good. After more than 100 years in business the school will close this spring. MAN WHO SWINDLED DEAF AND BLIND WIDOW GETS SEVEN-YEAR PRISON TERM
A Vermont parolee was sentenced to state prison Monday for stealing more than $280,000 from a widow with dementia to buy a classic record collection, a Tiffany & Co. engagement ring and a "sex swing." John Thomas Windsor, 44, of Costa Mesa was sentenced to seven years and four months for stealing thousands from the woman, who was also blind, deaf and confined to her home, the Orange County district attorney’s office said in a statement. / Los Angeles Times

BOND UPHELD FOR MAN ACCUSED OF ABUSING DEAF AURORA TEEN
A 30-year-old Aurora man accused of sex abuse remains held in Kane County Jail on $100,000 bail after a judge denied a bond-reduction request Wednesday. Travis A. Armstrong was arrested April 18 and charged with aggravated criminal sex abuse and solicitation to meet a child. The arrest followed a sheriff’s office investigation that began in March involving a teenager who said she met Armstrong at Jaycee Park in Aurora where they engaged in sex acts on “several occasions,” according to court documents. / Aurora Beacon News

CUED SPEECH HELPS COLORADO BOY 'SEE' WHAT OTHER SAY; MAX ONLY DEAF CHILD IN STATE USING METHOD
A rap video is raising awareness about a little-used form of communication for the deaf called Cued Speech. One Colorado mother says her middle school son is the only deaf child in the state using the method. "We found out Max was deaf when he was 3 years old," said Lisa Weiss. "So he had already lost three years of acquiring spoken language." Her son, Max Tucker, 11, now has bilateral cochlear implants and can hear in quiet situations, but has trouble when there is background noise. / 7NEWS

BARRINGTON NATIVE ON GLOBAL QUEST TO PROMOTE DEAF RIGHTS
Marissa Polvere is on a mission to travel the world — and she has a lot to accomplish on that mission. Polvere, who was born deaf, wants to use her travels to enhance rights and accessibility for deaf people all over the globe. A current student at Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, N.Y., Polvere recently traveled to South America with 13 other RIT students to study the sign languages of Chile and other countries and to examine how rights for deaf people differ in that part of the world. / Lake County News-Sun

The North Carolina School for the Deaf Foundation — comprised of NCSD alumni, parents of students and graduates, educators, business and community leaders, interested private citizens and a liaison from the school’s administration — has selected the old Morganton High School location as the future site of its North Carolina Senior Deaf and Blind Community project. Lamar University public radio 91.3 KVLU is one of 26 NPR member stations that has been selected to participate in a pilot program to demonstrate the delivery of emergency alerts to people who are deaf or hard-of-hearing in the Gulf Coast states. We’re not sure what Thamsanqa Jantjie was thinking when he recorded this advert for a live video-sharing app, but we’re pretty sure that the company he’s advertising, Live Lens, knew what they were doing: causing a bit more controversy, at the expense of Deaf people, to help publicise their product. The UN has given its Prize in the Field of Human Rights to a Finn for the first time. Liisa Kauppinen was recognized for her work on behalf of deaf people all over the world. COURT TOLD DEAF MAN'S SIGNING WAS MISTAKEN FOR AGGRESSION DURING STRUGGLE WITH POLICE
Police arresting a deaf man “did not handle the situation appropriately”, a court has been told. Peter Drinnan, 29, was treated tactlessly by officers and was not offered an interpreter, despite being unable to hear anything, his solicitor told Dundee Sheriff Court. The “rough” incident happened after a drunken Drinnan, accompanied by a friend, attempted to enter a casino. The visibly intoxicated pair were refused admission, leading Drinnan to punch a casino employee on the head. / The Courier

A man described as a “shining example” to his community has been nominated for an award. Alex Duguid is up for the Achieving Excellence accolade in this year’s Pride of South Tyneside. DEAF COUPLE UPSET AS DRIVER REFUSES FARE
A Worthing private hire driver refused to take a fare from a profoundly deaf couple because they were travelling with a hearing assistance dog. Paul Tolchard called A2B Taxis to book a vehicle on March 28. But when the driver arrived at the Edwards’ home, he said that his insurance would be invalidated if he allowed Cleo, a small cocker spaniel/miniature poodle cross, which has been specially trained, to travel. / West Sussex Gazette

PROFESSIONAL MUSICIANS FOUR TIMES MORE LIKELY TO GO DEAF
Professional musicians are four times nearly more likely to suffer from deafness caused by exposure to loud noise than the general population, a new study has shown. Whether playing in rock bands or in an orchestra, career musicians are also 57 per cent more likely to develop tinnitus. Creighton asked him to walk onto the field. The coach did not need Franklin to reenter the game. "Need you to sign for me, please," Creighton said. The Advocate also works with businesses, agencies, and service providers on both an individual and systems basis in order to educate them on the needs and rights of deaf and hard of hearing individuals as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Domains within which the Advocate may provide support to clients include but are not limited to the following: communication assistance, peer counseling, disability benefits, health care, housing, money management, transportation, independent living, assistive technology, and employment.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

Experience working with persons who are deaf and hard of hearing
Fluency in American Sign Language
In-depth knowledge of Deaf Culture

Thomas Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences (GCCIS). The successful applicant's duties include course instruction (teaching and tutoring), computer laboratory instruction/supervision, curriculum/course development, participation in departmental efforts, and maintaining liaison relationships with faculty in other colleges of RIT.

Required Minimum Qualifications
• Master of Science in Information Technology, Computer Science or related computing field.
