Milwaukee, WI
POPE, VATICAN SUED IN SEX ABUSE CASE
A Milwaukee attorney filed suit against Pope Benedict and the Vatican for failing to take action against a priest who abused deaf students in Wisconsin. Attorney Jeffrey Anderson said his client, who was identified in the suit only as John Doe, 16, wrote to the Vatican, saying the Rev. Lawrence Murphy had molested him at St. Francis School for the Deaf in St. Francis, Wis., but received no response. "That letter from a deaf man fell on deaf ears," Anderson told ABC. / UPI

Vatican City
U.S. LAWSUIT AGAINST POPE NOT LEGITIMATE -- VATICAN
The Vatican on Friday dismissed as illegitimate a lawsuit filed in the United States against Pope Benedict and his top aides over a case of sexual abuse at a school for deaf boys in Wisconsin. "The case against the Holy See and its officials is completely without merit. Most of the complaint rehashes old theories already rejected by U.S. courts," Vatican lawyer Jeffrey Lena said in a statement. "While legitimate lawsuits have been filed by abuse victims, this is not one of them," the lawyer said. / The New York Times

THE PUBLIC EDITOR: QUESTIONING THE POPE
A top Vatican official said The Times “lacks fairness in its coverage of Pope Benedict.” The archbishop of Brooklyn urged parishioners to “besiege” the paper and send a message that the Catholic Church will no longer be its “personal punching bag.” Writers in The Wall Street Journal and other publications have assailed the paper. Hundreds of people have written to me. “I am outraged each time The Times intentionally disparages the Catholic Church, its pope and its bishops,” said Richard Kelly of Pittsburgh. / The New York Times

SCHOOL LEADER ARRESTED: ENCSD LEADER PLACED ON LEAVE AFTER ASSAULT CHARGE
The director of the Eastern North Carolina School for the Deaf is on investigatory leave after being charged with assault on a female and second-degree kidnapping. Reginald Redding, 42, was arrested and charged Thursday, officials said. The accuser told authorities Redding pushed her and "placed a pillow over her face several times" before she was able to get away. Redding was placed in the Nash County Jail under a $15,000 secured bond. He posted bond and was released. / The Wilson Daily Times

Conroe, TX
DEAF TEXAS MAN INDICTED ON CAPITAL MURDER
While her deaf client has been indicted on a charge of capital murder in the stabbing death of his estranged wife, a Houston attorney said she doesn’t believe that charge should stick because he “didn’t mean to kill her.” Willis police arrested Earl Handy Jr., 39, of Conroe, Jan. 16 for allegedly fatally stabbing Donna Allen Handy, 34, in her home. He also is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after allegedly injuring Handy’s boyfriend, Joseph Taylor, of Conroe. Handy is still in the Montgomery County Jail with no bond amount set, according to jail information. / Conroe Courier News

MICAH BROWN, DEAF STUDENT TEACHER, ARRESTED ON FELONY SEX CHARGES
A student teacher for the American School for the Deaf in Connecticut, Micah Brown, was arrested by the New York police after he traveled to New York to have sexual relations with girls between the ages of 14 and 16. Brown, 30, allegedly met one 15-year-old girl in an AOL chat room, then continued to contact her through texting and eventually met her for sexual contact. The investigation began when the girl reported to the state police in Elbridge that she had sexual relations with Brown. / Disaboom

St. Louis, MO
ADVOCATES FOR DEAF SUE STATE OVER MENTAL HEALTH CARE
After Sheri Cerame's son was assaulted, suffered post-traumatic stress disorder and became a potential threat to himself and others, his parents followed a psychiatrist's advice and took him to a residential mental health facility. Within an hour, they said, a nurse tried to strap on a straitjacket because of the "flailing hands" of the then-preteen boy, who is deaf and cannot speak. That flailing -- Cerame's son's attempt to communicate by using sign language -- is emblematic of a systemic statewide problem in Missouri, advocates for the deaf said Monday after filing a lawsuit aimed at fixing it. / St. Louis Today

Baton Rouge, LA
DEAF WOMAN'S SUIT CLAIMS STATE POLICE DISCRIMINATION
A 66-year-old Baton Rouge woman who is deaf contends her firing Thursday as a data entry clerk from the Louisiana State Police amounts to “disability-based discrimination and harassment’’ as well as “illegal retaliation." Camille Brewton, who worked for State Police since 1999, sued the state Thursday for an unspecified amount of damages. Lt. Doug Cain, a State Police spokesman, painted a different picture about her termination. “This is about a substandard employee who did not meet the expectations of her job,’’ Cain said. Jill Craft, one of Brewton’s attorneys, said she was terminated eight days before vesting for her retirement. / The Advocate

Greenville, SC
EX-GREENVILLE PD OFFICER PLEADS GUILTY TO CIVIL RIGHTS VIOLATIONS
Former Greenville Police officer, Jeremiah Milliman, has pleaded guilty to two counts of misdemeanor civil rights violations. The charges stem from two separate incidents last September, involving alleged abuse of the homeless. In one incident on September 12, Milliman and several officers encountered a deaf mute homeless man who was intoxicated. After arresting him, the goverment charges Milliman "poked the man with a pen" and made him "cry out" with a noise common to deaf individuals. When he cried out, Milliman "poked him again" so other officers could hear the noise. Federal prosecutors then say Milliman poured hand sanitizer on the man. / WSPA

Minneapolis, MN
DEAF MAN'S CASE AGAINST ST. PAUL POLICE, RAMSEY COUNTY JAIL AIRED
It all started when Douglas Bahl, driving to visit his wife in the hospital, ran a red light. Three and a half years after the traffic stop, Bahl's beating by a policeman, arrest and jailing have become the foundation for a federal lawsuit claiming the city of St. Paul and Ramsey County violated the Americans with Disabilities Act in the way they handled Bahl. On Friday in a federal courtroom in Minneapolis, lawyers for the city and county argued that Bahl had no claim and said the suit should be thrown out. "This is a simple case about a deaf man who spent 67 hours in jail because he fought with police," said Assistant Ramsey County Attorney Thomas Ring. / Pioneer Press

ZOO'S CAUTION KEEPS NEW DEAF GORILLA SEGREGATED, OFF VIEW
Oliver moved to Columbus in September to make friends and, potentially, babies. But seven months later, the 21-year-old Western lowland gorilla is still alone, waiting for his public debut and his female harem. Oliver is deaf. No one knows when or why he lost his hearing. But his deafness makes him unusual enough that not every zoo is equipped to integrate him into its gorilla families. / The Columbus Dispatch

The grandmother was injured when she was attacked in her home in the Northland Road area of Londonderry last May. NOISY POLICE RADIOS MAKING COPS DEAF
Hundreds of police officers have been injured over the past five years ... by their radios. Screeching feedback through the earpiece has damaged their hearing, some permanently, according to a study by the Police Review magazine. Some 613 officers around the UK have reported having their hearing damaged by police radio screeches. One cop, who did not want to be named, said: "Sometimes you just hear a massive screeching in your earpiece and you have to take it out. It takes you a few minutes to get your head together." / Mirror

A half-deaf country music fan was told yesterday to buy an iPod or risk jail -- because he plays his records too loud. EMPOWERING DEAF ADULTS: MIRAKLE COURIERS
Can you earn your living without speaking to anyone? Well, Mirakle Couriers’ team of 55 delivery boys do not speak, much as they cannot hear. But they are perfectly empowered to be a part of society. Dhruv Lakra, Founder and CEO of Mirakle Couriers tells us more. Q. How did you get the idea of empowering the deaf? A. One day in a bus, a deaf boy sat next to me. I was amazed at how well he communicated -- by writing on a pad. This got me thinking about how the deaf are perfectly normal except for the one disability. / Ennovent Blog

DEAF CHILD FROM RUSSIA NEEDS A LOVING HOME
There’s a little boy in Russia who is deaf and needs a loving home. Read this email that I received from Elizabeth Gastelum, an attorney from Illinois: My husband and I adopted our kids from Russia last fall (both with hearing loss). We thought they were the only kids there with a hearing loss, but once we arrived we realized that another little boy in the same group as our daughter also has a hearing loss. He is 5 years old and Buryat (Russian, but of Mongolian descent). He is a sweetheart! / A Deaf Mom Shares Her World

DEAF CHILDREN BENEFIT FROM EDUCATION, WORK IN BESIEGED GAZA
Sherihan Zeyada, 24, seems to oscillate between her shyness and a high desire to communicate. Working in the pottery-painting unit, she is one of thousands annual beneficiaries of Atfaluna Society for Deaf Children located in Gaza City. "Atfaluna" is an Arabic word meaning "our children" and the society has been working in the field of deaf education and allied services since 1992. The organization runs a full time school for pupils aged from four to 17, and helps deaf children and adults to reach their full potential by providing quality education, health care, social services, and work opportunities. / Xinhua

DEAF PARENTS SHOWED LOVE
As a little girl, Marianna Stewart remembers sitting on the curb outside the Deaf Club in Brooklyn, N.Y., thinking “these people are the greatest people -- the best people in the world.” As a hearing child of deaf parents, “I knew there were differences,” Stewart said. And one was most obvious. Whether it’s because smiles, frowns and intense body language are so much part of what she calls “the grammar” of signing, she’s not sure. “But the love,” Stewart said, pausing briefly. “What a difference with deaf people. The love is there.” / Springfield News-Sun

THEATER REVIEW: 'MY SISTER IN THIS HOUSE' AT DEAF WEST THEATRE
In 1933, the savage murders of a French woman and her daughter by their live-in domestics gained international attention, inspiring Genet’s “The Maids,” Chabrol’s “La Ceremonie” and Wendy Kesselman’s award-winning 1980 play, “My Sister in This House.” Now Kesselman has rewritten her drama for a striking new production by Deaf West. Here, convent-raised siblings Christine (Deanne Bray) and Lea (Amber Zion) are deaf, intensifying their working-class subjugation and isolation. / Los Angeles Times

To many people, storytelling means fairy tales, fables and make-believe, and the audiences are usually children. During performances at Ocean County College's recent Deaf Awareness Day, the storytellers seemed more like stand-up comics, sharing true accounts of growing up deaf and living and working in a hearing world. DEFYING DEAFNESS, ONE SONG AT A TIME
Broomfield resident and jazz vocalist Mandy Harvey always had issues with her hearing. "The first six months of my entire life, I didn`t hear anything, and then it just kind of started working," she said. She lost her hearing again around age 5. "Then I had a severe ear infection when I was in third grade that ... ate through a third of my eardrum tissue," she said, "so I`ve had serious problems all my life." The experience so terrified her that she became obsessed with wearing earmuffs to protect her hearing, but she doesn`t think that experience drove her to music. "Music is an expression of the soul," Harvey said. / Broomfield Enterprise

DEAF ICON CURTIS PRIDE BRINGING BIG-LEAGUE GAME TO GALLAUDET
When Gallaudet hired Curtis Pride to coach its baseball team, the move served two purposes: It gave a woebegone Division III program credibility by snagging an 11-year major leaguer to lead it. And it gave deaf athletes nationwide a chance to play for an iconic figure in their community. So last fall Danny Gabel left New York to re-enroll at Gallaudet, majoring in deaf studies and history.
