A deaf 5-year-old boy was fighting for his life after he was mowed down by a cab in Brooklyn — as his horrified parents, who also can’t hear, looked on. Timothy Keith’s mother and father were inconsolable after their first family trip to the city turned to heartbreak Saturday. With tears streaming down her face, Timothy’s mother described what happened in a wrenching written interview. “I was with my son. The(n) he walk to road. I say NO to him,” wrote Eva Keith, 29, of Washington, D.C. “I saw taxi yellow so fast. Driver hit my son but my son can’t hear.” / NY Daily News

95 YEARS IN BEATING DEATH OF DEAF MAN
A convicted killer who used a baseball bat to bludgeon a deaf man from behind received a 95-year prison sentence in Allen Superior Court Monday. Manuel Silva, previously found guilty by a jury of killing 39-year-old Christopher Deaton last summer, sat shackled in a chair as family members of his victim called him a coward and told him that no matter what punishment befell him, it'd never make up for what he took away. Afterward, Judge John Surbeck sentenced Silva to the maximum for murder - 65 years - and tacked on another 30 years for Silva's past. / The Journal Gazette

DRAMATIC PLANE CRASH TRIAL ENDS ABRUPTLY WITH SETTLEMENTS
The legal saga of Alec Naiman, Jeffrey Willoughby and Jessica Willoughby vs. Cessna Aircraft Company ended abruptly last week, after the three 2005 plane crash victims accepted settlement offers. The nearly month-long Edgartown trial concluded Wednesday when Mr. Naiman, the pilot who suffered crippling injuries in the crash at Katama airfield, agreed to a confidential settlement. The Willoughbys -- who were passengers in the plane -- dropped out of the case after they agreed to a $1.7 million settlement offer from Cessna. / Vineyard Gazette

WENDY'S FRANCHISE SUED BY EEOC FOR DISABILITY DISCRIMINATION
The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission announced Tuesday that it has filed suit against CTW L.L.C., a Wendy’s franchisee, for denying employment to a hearing-impaired applicant because of his disability in violation federal law. The EEOC charges in its suit that the general manager of a Killeen, Texas Wendy’s refused to hire Michael Harrison, Jr. for a cooker position, despite his qualifications and experience, upon learning that Harrison is hearing-impaired. / EEOC

911 BOARD LAUNCHES TRIAL TEXTING PROGRAM
The Vermont Enhanced 911 Board has launched the first statewide pilot program that will allow hearing impaired Vermonters to access emergency services by texting on their cell phones. The trial project will run for the next 6 months and will be available only to Verizon wireless customers. Keri Darling, the director of a group known as Deaf Vermont Advocacy Services, said the new service is a critical step forward for the state's hearing-impaired community. / Vermont Public Radio

JUDGE TO DECIDE DISPUTE OVER ARTWORK BY JAMES CASTLE FOUND IN HOME IN BOISE
A judge will decide who owns three bundles of artwork by James Castle found tucked away in the famed artist's home and potentially worth thousands of dollars. Artwork by Castle, who lived in a northwest Boise home until he died in 1977, is collected worldwide. Individual pieces have sold for as much as $50,000. Castle was born deaf and mute. The self-taught artist's drawings were made with a sharpened stick dipped in soot and saliva. Some are in collections at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. / The Associated Press

INSTITUTE FOR DEAF CHILDREN TO CLOSE KC CAMPUS
Blaming a lack of enrollment and funding, the Saint Joseph Institute for the Deaf will close its Kansas City Metro Campus in Lenexa this summer. Leaders of the Institute say it has unique services and it was distressing to make the decision to close the campus. / WDAF

POLICY TO REQUIRE SIGNING FLUENCY
In the 141-year history of the West Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind, there has never been a policy outlining employee sign language requirements. "There is no (sign language) standard at this point that anyone needs to have for any position on campus," said Dr. Lynn Boyer, superintendent of the school. An aggressive new communications policy aims to change that: Starting in July, every employee at the school will be required to attain a certain degree of fluency in sign language or Braille comprehension. / Charleston Daily Mail

DEAF, NEARLY BLIND TEEN VISITS WHITE HOUSE
Most kids celebrate Easter with egg hunts in their backyard, but only a select few can say they found theirs at the White House. Even fewer can say they participated without the ability to see or hear. Ashley Riva, a 17-year-old student at Perkins School for the Blind in Watertown, and three of her classmates participated in the 134th annual White House Easter Egg Roll on Monday, where they used spoons to carry their beeping eggs in a race against thousands of other participants. / The MetroWest Daily News

LETTER: DEAF SCHOOL SEARCH GOT CIRCUMVENTED
The Iowa Board of Regents’ appointment of Patrick Clancy as superintendent of the Iowa School for the Deaf was made with very little discussion, no consultation with the deaf community or with deaf education specialists. A search for the most qualified person was circumvented to appoint someone who admits that he has no background in deaf education, his American Sign Language skills are lacking, but he feels it is “less ideal” and “we’ll manage.” / Des Moines Register

DEAF AND DUMB GIRL KILLED FOR HONOUR
When Sharif told his 20-year-old daughter Rehana that he was taking her to her aunt's home a few miles away, in last July, the deaf and dumb girl had no idea that it was going to be her last journey and that her father would turn her killer. The police investigation revealed that Rehana, who was deaf and dumb since birth, was pregnant. Her parents had approached doctors for `medical termination of pregnancy' but they refused as it was too late and abortion would have been risky. Sharif and his son Sahil then hatched a conspiracy to kill Rehana. / Deccan Herald

COURT REMANDS DEAF AND DUMB OVER HOMOSEXUALISM
The Magistrate Court Osogbo, Osun State, has ordered that, one Akinyemi Ojo, 35, a deaf and dumb be remanded in Ilesa Prison for alleged involvement in homosexualism. Ojo was accused of practicing homosexualism with a 12-year-old boy after he had kept him for three days in his room. The prosecutor told the court that the accused had carnal knowledge of the victim by putting his manhood into him, knowing that he is a male. / The Sun

Well, this is embarrassing, isn’t it? You try and do something a bit different and special and then Johnny Depp goes and messes it up for you. In the promo for McCartney’s new single, My Valentine, Johnny, along with Natalie Portman are seen making a number of mistakes while trying to sign. First up Nat signs the word tampon rather than appear (oh bloody hell, it couldn’t have been another word could it?) and then Johnny signs enemy while trying to sign valentine (yeah that’s pretty major considering the song is called My Valentine). / Mr Paparazzi

A groundbreaking communications system is being launched to make life easier for people who are profoundly deaf or have hearing loss. From next month, local charity Deafness Support Network will be offering online interpreters to Cheshire’s 90,000 residents. DEAF RAPPER FEELS THE MUSIC AND SINGS BY SIGNING
Here’s something you never hear: “He’s a deaf rapper.” That’s how Marko Vuoriheimo (a.k.a Signmark) is often introduced, not that he can hear the description. Most of us associate music with our earsm but not long after he was born deaf in 1978, Signmark recalls feeling music. Growing up in Helsinki, he “translated” Christmas carols into sign language so that the entire family (his parents are deaf, his grandparents are not) could perform together — a bilingual affair uniting singing with signing. Somewhat improbably, Signmark then discovered hip hop. / Toronto Star

FARMERS GOING DEAF
The National Centre for Farmer Health is worried about the number of farmers reporting hearing loss. The Centre is conducting noise audits on farms in western Victoria to help people manage noise levels on their properties. Centre director Susan Brumby says shearing and milking sheds, as well as motorbikes and machinery, all contribute to the problem. "There's reports and published articles saying that it's up to 60 per cent (of farmers reporting hearing loss)," she said. / ABC Rural

DEAF PERTH COUPLE BURGLED
An elderly deaf woman had her handbag stolen from her home while gardening in her backyard with her husband. Police spokeswoman Ros Weatherall said a man broke into the Cooloongup home of an elderly deaf couple while the pair were in their backyard gardening on Sunday about 3pm. An 84 year-old man and his wife were still at the back of their property on Grange Drive when the burglar fled the front of the house with what appeared to be a handbag. / The Sydney Morning Herald

DEAF MP LEADS CALL FOR DVD SUBTITLES
Members of the deaf community say they feel excluded by most locally made DVDs, which have no English subtitles. Deaf MP Mojo Mathers says most DVD productions do not include subtitles, and ONE News has discovered there is no requirement for them to do so. "I feel really excluded and lots of hard of hearing people in New Zealand feel the same," Mathers said. / TVNZ

DEAF BURGLAR ARRESTED AFTER STEALING FROM OVER 30 HOUSES
A press conference was held on Friday evening to publicize the success in closing the case of multiple burglaries. The offender was a deaf man, Mr. Weerasak Reuan-a-raam, aged 32, from Nong-pla-lai, Banglamung. The fellow was caught with 16 different stolen items, including electric appliances, Buddha images, music equipment and bicycles. / Pattaya People

Vlad Mateoiu, 12, is a student at the Special School for Deaf Children No. 1 in Bucharest, Romania’s capital. His family lives in Dambovita, another county in Romania, so he stays at the boarding facility connected to the school. But shaky state finances now threaten Vlad’s education. This post on Consumerist.com got me thinking and I'd be interested to hear your opinion. In the post, a man reported about his visit to Target. In the checkout line, his cashier had a sign which read "Cashier is Hearing Impaired." He was worried it was embarassing for the cashier and calling attention to something that might not be a big deal. In my line of work, I work with the public a lot, although it's not retail. Usually at least 60% of my day is spent answering questions from people. This got me wondering if I would want such a sign at the computer I work from. / Hearing Sparks

STUDENTS AT MADONNA LEARN SIGN LANGUAGE BY HEART, HAND
The students' eyes locked onto Sharon Meldrum as she stood at the front of the classroom. They couldn't glance away or look down at their notebooks. It was quiet, except for the whispers of an interpreter translating Meldrum's sign language for a classroom visitor. Even when Meldrum briefly stepped out of the room, there was no sound as the 15 or so students chatted with one another, their hands and fingers flying. There was much anticipation and excitement apparent in the conversations of the crowd assembled for the event “Signs and Rhymes: Intersections of Deaf & Hip Hop Cultures” last night at New York University. Both hands and lips moved feverishly as the large crowd filed into their seats. Having only seen American Sign Language used when providing interpretation during public events, it was incredibly compelling to see an entire crowd conversing with each other. / NYU Local

LOCAL ARTIST PORTRAYS MULTIPLE DEAF CHARACTERS IN HALF MOON BAY SHOW
An independent deaf-blind man, a deaf prostitute, a man awaiting trial for murder, and a psychologist who serves as an advocate, interpreter and chauffeur for her clients will all make an appearance in Half Moon Bay later this month during "Deaf Poets Society," a one-woman show written and performed by Montara artist Nancy Margulies. Before moving to the Coastside, Margulies worked in art therapy for many years with deaf individuals in the state prisons of Illinois and Missouri. BOSTON MARATHON PUSHES BLIND, DEAF ADVENTURER TO LIMIT
Conquering challenges is nothing new to adventurer Bill Barkeley. So when the Boston Marathon organizers offered racers the ability to opt out of Monday's event because of the high heat index, Barkeley knew what he had to do. Barkeley has climbed Mount Kiliminjaro and Mount Quandary, he's led a group of teens with hearing loss on a trek through the Peruvian Amazon as part of the No Barriers organization, which aims to help people with disabilities lead more full and active lives. He's also legally blind and deaf. No, weather wasn't going to stop Bill Barkeley. / MLive.com

DEAF SPEED SKATER HAS OLYMPIC ASPIRATIONS
Speed Skater Michael Hubbs has his sights on the 2014 Winter Olympics. A graduate of the Texas School for the Deaf, Hubbs is fast on the ice. Now, he’s training to make it to the Olympics. His career began when he was 10 years old with roller skating. He became a serious skater at the age of 12 and traveled for competition until the age of 16. “By the time I was 16, I started skating on a national level. Later on, when I was 27, I went to the ice and I realized ice skating was quite a bit different from roller and inline skating,” he said. / YNN

FLORIDA DEAF HIRES ERIC LEFORS AS FOOTBALL HEAD COACH
The Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind football team filled its coaching vacancy on Wednesday, promoting assistant Eric LeFors. LeFors, whose brother Stefan was a quarterback at Louisville and a fourth-round draft pick of the Carolina Panthers in 2005, has been at the school more than a decade. He replaces Johnny Samuels, who retired following the 2011 season. / The Florida Times Union

ASSISTANT OPERATIONS DIRECTOR for RESIDENTIAL SERVICES: (Full Time Position) The qualified candidate shall possess: Bachelor’s degree in Human Services field with two years of supervisory experience in behavioral health and/or developmental disabilities program; OR a HS with 5 plus years of experience working in the mental health field, two of which must be in a supervisory role. Advanced ASL fluency required. Strong leadership, administrative, organizational and interpersonal communication skills (both in person and in writing) required. Strong ability to manage and complete multiple tasks, priorities and projects as well as the ability to lead, teach, advise and motivate staff and consumers.

Responsibilities include:

Regulatory Compliance -Insure compliance with the health, safety, and occupancy regulations and contract requirements of all relevant Governmental and professional accreditation entities. Assure the maintenance of DPW and other licensures as required.

Budget -Insures that program expenses are kept within budgetary limits. Work with Operations Director and other fiscal management personnel to develop yearly budgets..

Supervision -Maintain a supervisory process including both individual and group meetings of all program staff for direction, guidance and support. Communicate agency policies and procedures, client information, and all other relevant information to staff as needed.

Personnel -Oversee and recruit, hire and train qualified staff to provide sufficient supervision and support to meet client needs, agency standards, and contractual or regulatory requirements. Develop department/division standards in compliance with agency policies.

Liaison - Maintain effective working relationships with clients, officials, families and agency personnel. Insure full participation in an interagency planning process for individual clients as well as for service system development and problem solving. Provide ongoing communication with psychiatric service providers such as the psychiatrist, therapists and specialized consultants or practitioners as well as county and state governmental agencies.

Job Description:
This position provides culturally affirmative mental health services to D/HH adults coping with mental health issues. The main responsibility of the Mental Health Specialist is to provide psychotherapy/ counseling services and the remaining of time will include clinical case management/coordination, consultation, training, aftercare planning, and community placement assistance for D/HH adults.

Minimum Qualifications:
Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL)
At least 2 years advanced profession experience, OR 1 year advanced professional experience plus 2 years professional experience providing direct mental health services to D/HH individuals.
Master's Degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work or behavioral-health related field
Licensed or license-eligible for LPC, LPCC, LP, LICSW or LMFT in the state of Minnesota
