DOCUMENTS DETAIL CASE OF PRIEST ACCUSED OF MOLESTING DEAF BOYS
The case of the Rev. Lawrence C. Murphy, accused of molesting as many as 200
deaf boys at a school in Wisconsin, stands out among the cases of sexual abuse
by Catholic priests because of the number and vulnerability of the victims,
and the availability of documents revealing how church officials handled the
matter. Father Murphy died in 1998, still a priest, despite documents showing
that a priest had informed church officials as early as the mid-1950s that deaf
children had complained that Father Murphy was molesting them. The police and
prosecutors in Wisconsin were also informed by the victims and their advocates,

The modest clapboard cottage projects a sense of simple rural peace, nestled
amid tall pines on quiet Trout Lake. The house, in the Northwoods of Wisconsin,
had been in the Rev. Lawrence C. Murphy’s family for years, his getaway
in the summer months and his sanctuary where he was sent to retire in 1974,
at age 48, after victims of sexual abuse demanded he be removed from work at
a school for the deaf near Milwaukee. But Father Murphy’s time around
Boulder Junction was not so secluded, according to recent interviews with people
who live in the area and Roman Catholic Church documents. / The

TOP VATICAN OFFICIAL REBUTS NEW YORK TIMES' ATTACK ON POPE
Cardinal William Levada, the head of the Vatican’s Congregation for the
Doctrine of the Faith, strongly refuted charges first reported in the New York
Times that then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger - now Pope Benedict XVI -
declined to punish a priest accused of abusing as many as 200 deaf boys from
the 1950’s to 1970’s. Levada, who succeeded Ratzinger when the latter
was elected Pope in 2005, called the Times’ reporting on the issue, and
an accompanying editorial, “deficient by any reasonable standards of fairness.”

JUDGE IN FATHER MURPHY CASE SAYS HE WAS NOT TOLD TO DROP IT
The judge assigned to the Catholic Church trial of a priest accused of molesting
up to 200 deaf boys said Thursday that he was never told to drop the case, as
suggested in court records, and that if he had been told to do so, he would
have appealed the order to the highest reaches of the Vatican. "I would
have directly appealed the case to the Supreme Court of the church. I would
have tried to get it to Pope John Paul II," said the Rev. Thomas Brundage,
a canon lawyer assigned by then-Archbishop Rembert Weakland to preside over
the trial of Father Lawrence Murphy in 1996. / Journal

DEAF COMMUNITY SHOCKED BY PRIEST SCANDAL AT DEAF SCHOOL
The latest news in the deaf community about sexual abuse by a priest at a deaf
school is astonishing for people who are not aware that there are indeed issues
at deaf schools all over the nation. The reason that this has not been a widespread
issue is because not all deaf schools are affiliated with the Catholic religion.
Catholic priests have been under investigation for sex abuse in the recent decade
and most recently, the Pope has been pointed at for not being more strict with
priests around the United States. Is this a widespread scandal or are we only
focusing on the 200 deaf boys who were molested in Wisconsin? / Disaboom

they were trying to get someone -- anyone -- to do something about Father Lawrence
Murphy, the priest who had abused them as children, might have been crude, but
they were not base or petty, nor were they propaganda or the “gossip of
the moment.” They were the story of these men’s lives. They just
didn’t have a palace and a press office at their disposal, as Benedict
does, or even anything like the office he inhabited in Rome as Cardinal, when
he received a letter of appeal from Murphy, after which proceedings against

POPE: I THOUGHT PRIESTS WERE 'AMUSING' CHILDREN
In the latest development in the ongoing Catholic Church child abuse scandal,
Pope Benedict XVI is blaming his failure to stop pedophile priests on a hearing
problem that has plagued him for decades, or at least since the first abuse
reports surfaced. "For years, I thought my aides were telling me that people
had come forward to say the priests were amusing children in their parishes,"
said Benedict in a prepared statement released by the Vatican. "With laughter
being one of God's greatest gifts to mankind, you can understand why I didn't

PRIEST CLEARED OF SEX ABUSE IN 2006 FACES NEW CHARGES
A Catholic priest in Weymouth who was cleared of sex abuse charges by the Boston
Archdiocese four years ago and reinstated at his church has voluntarily stepped
down after a second person came forward last week and accused him of abuses
four decades ago. The Boston Archdiocese said it learned of the new charges
against the Rev. Charles J. Murphy just over one week ago and contacted civil
authorities. The Archdiocese said that it has launched its own investigation
into the allegations and Murphy has voluntarily stepped aside from his ministry

ARLINGTON CHARTER SCHOOL FIGHTING TO STAY OPEN
Educators at Jean Massieu Academy in Arlington say they're close to turning
the low-performing school into a place where teachers and students consistently
meet expectations. But first, the charter school's officials must persuade the
Texas Education Agency not to close it July 1. Jean Massieu started in 1999
to serve deaf children, their siblings and peers. Over time, the student body
has grown to include students who aren't hearing-impaired who struggled or did
not feel safe in the large public school system, Principal Kathi Johnson said.

HEARING LOSS CASE COSTS COMPANY $250,000
Lawyers believe a judge’s award of damages to five former refinery workers
for hearing damage is the first of its kind in Louisiana. A judge has ordered
Murphy Oil Corp. to pay the five employees $50,000 each for noise-induced hearing
loss, a total of $250,000. The five employees worked at the company’s
Meraux, LA, plant. The company may have to pay out more for hearing loss, as
the court has yet to rule on the claims of 35 other former employees. / Safety

BILL WOULD REQUIRE CLOSED CAPTIONING
A bill pending in Congress aimed at helping the hard of hearing and other disabled
people access television and Web casts with greater ease is being praised by
local advocates. According to disabilities activist Jamie Berke, who is deaf,
HR 3101 is a proposed federal law spearheaded by the Coalitions of Organizations
for Accessible Technology and includes local and state chapters of the Hearing

DEAF SPEAKER SHARES LIFE STORIES
After being falsely pronounced dead at birth, Richard Pimentel was abandoned
by his biological mother. Four years later, his grandmother adopted him from
an orphanage and raised him. Even with a rough start to his life, Pimental enlisted
in the army during the Vietnam War, where he suffered a brain injury and severe
hearing loss. Now a disability activist Pimentel spoke in HHS Monday, during
Disability Awareness Week, about his life and experiences with a disability.

DEAF CARETAKER CHARGED WITH BATTERY TO 7-MONTH-OLD INFANT
A deaf West Side woman was charged with aggravated battery to a child last Thursday
for allegedly shaking and squeezing an infant she was caring for earlier this
month. Angela Harris, 47, of 5200 block of West Quincy, was charged early Thursday
after police questioned her through a sign-language interpreter, police said.

DEAF MAN HIT CROSSING ROAD IMPROVING
A deaf man remains hospitalized two days after he was struck by a vehicle while
attempting to cross North Broadway near the Warren County Fairgrounds. The condition
of Kenneth Martz, 31, has improved from critical to fair condition this morning,
April 1, according to officials at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton. Martz was
trying to cross the street around 3:20 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, when he was struck

CLAIMS
Dozens of former factory workers who had their hearing damaged in the workplace
could be in line for thousands of pounds of compensation. Employees whose health
has suffered due to noisy machinery have been urged to attend a free clinic
in Crewe. They are being hosted by Hartshill-based injury lawyers Attwood Solicitors.
Last year, the law firm helped more than 100 ex-potters in Stoke-on-Trent pursue

COTTON BUD LINKED TO BOY'S HEARING PROBLEM
Nine years is a long time for an 11-year-old boy to be without any hearing in
his right ear, however, this is what happened to Jerome Bartens who had to cope
with this handicap. He was diagnosed as deaf in his right ear when he was just
2-years-old. Doctors and hearing aid audiologists could offer no help to the
Bartensâ?? and the cause of his deafness was left unresolved until 27
January 2008 when he and some friends were playing in a church hall. Something
popped in his ear and when he put his finger in his ear, a 1cm-long waxy cotton
bud came out. It is believed this bud has been lodged in his ear for the past

DEAF SCHOOL IN YAMAGUCHI PREFECTURE TO BE CLOSED THIS SPRING
A parting ceremony took place for 16 teachers and staff leaving their position
at Yamaguchi Southern General Special Support School (originally Shimonoseki
School for the Deaf) located in Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture on March
29. The school was established by the Prefecture in 1929 to serve the Deaf young
children and students. Closing the Shimonoseki School for the Deaf had been
decided in haste in the end of last year because of the prefecture's finance
problem and a decrease in the number of the enrolled students. / Deaf

An innovative programme in Old Havana has given the hearing impaired greater
access to the historical and cultural wealth of the restored historic city centre.
"Havana Radio is a public interest station with a focus on historical and
cultural themes, and the hearing impaired are a segment of the population who
would visit us and walk along these streets, but remained excluded from our
work of restoring our cultural heritage. That was why the Cultura entre las
Manos (roughly Culture in Our Hands) project was born," Yalena Gispert,

DOG PROVIDES COMFORT, AID FOR HEARING-IMPAIRED WOMAN
Myrna Wood knows she’s no young pup, but during the night, she certainly
has the ears of one. That’s because when she removes her hearing aids
at bedtime, Kiki, a 2-year-old hearing-ear dog, goes to work listening throughout
the night and alerting her mistress to sounds that otherwise would go unnoticed.
Wood is virtually deaf without her hearing aids and relies on those around her
to let her know if the phone is ringing, someone is knocking at the door or
the smoke alarm is sounding. When her grandson moved out, she lost the security
of knowing she could be warned about things that go bump in the night. Kiki

DEAF BULLDOG SHOWS OFF HER READING ABILITIES
Peaches, a 48-pound English bulldog, can read, said her owner, Bluebonnet Elementary
Principal Lucy McVey. Last Tuesday, Peaches bellied her way across the stage
at Hutto Baptist Church after McVey held up a flashcard that said "Crawl."
The 45 children in the audience started laughing. McVey and Peaches do demonstrations
at schools and other organizations to encourage children to read. The white
dog, who has been deaf since birth, also serves as an example of how disabilities

LUTHERAN CHURCH SERVES THE AREA'S DEAF
Warren Adolf grew up deaf and was baptized in a church where everybody else
could hear. Then when it came time for confirmation, he was helped by a minister
who was pastor of a church that catered to the deaf. "He didn't know before
that there was such a thing as a deaf church," said the Rev. Richard Moody.
Moody is pastor of Holy Cross Lutheran Church for the deaf, which once was led
by the minister who helped Adolf. Adolf was so impressed that he eventually

Throughout the year, they can be spotted everywhere from military bases in Virginia
to patriotic events in Fairfield County to even the occasional birthday party
or funeral. It's not often the Christian-based Remnant Expressive Signing Team
turns down an opportunity to minister to others -- after all, that's what they
have been called to do. "These kids, they're no different from other kids
their age," said Jeannie Phillips, who started the team about six years
ago. "The only difference is that God is using them to spread his love

Urbana High School teacher Michelle Shearer believes it is important to motivate
students and get them charged up about science. That attitude and approach to

in Shearer being named Maryland's recipient of the Siemens Advanced Placement
Teaching Award. While Shearer teaches a full-time schedule of advanced placement
chemistry, she has taught students with special needs at Urbana. The holder

'CORPUS CHRISTI' CONTROVERSY CONTINUES AT ANOTHER COLLEGE
John Otte at Tarleton State University might have started a new college trend.
For a class project he prepared an excerpt from the Terrence McNally play “Corpus
Christi,” which presents Jesus as gay. Now Gallaudet University in Washington
D.C. is presenting the play with some additional twists to rankle the radical
right who protested the Texas production into cancellation for safety reasons.
(A presentation of Otte’s class production in the Metroplex in a larger
venue is still pending). The show was just recently added to the theater department’s

Deaf performer and producer Catherine MacKinnon attended the LA Weekly Awards
in support of nominees Shoshanna Stern and the Deaf West Theatre, only to discover
that the LA Weekly had failed to provide American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters.
I must say that this upsets me as well and I’m not even deaf. I would
be pissed off and I would demand my money back. And so does the deaf community.

Surely this was an April Fool's joke. It had to be. According to celebratory
text messages received by family and friends from members of the Gallaudet University
baseball team, the Bison had defeated Stevenson University, 5-3, on Thursday
in the first game of a doubleheader. But such news was hard to believe on April
1, and harder still because Gallaudet hadn't won a Capital Athletic Conference

The Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind is once again organizing a competitive
high school track team to compete against other local schools. The team consists
of both deaf and blind runners, and spectators might be surprised at how discreet
the differences between VSDB athletes and non-disabled students really are.

fans would be unable to even realize the students had any kind of vision or

USA Deaf Sports Federation in conjunction with DeafNation will conduct the first-ever
USA Deaf Tennis Open to be held on July 15 to 19, 2010 at Las Vegas Hilton Tennis
Center and Lorenzi Park Tennis Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Open will be
held prior to the DeafNation World Expo on July 19 to 23. Sanctioned by the
International Committee of the Sport for the Deaf, and recognized by the United
States Tennis Association - Nevada District, the USA Deaf Tennis Open
will have four following events that will be counted toward tennis ranking points.
Open Men’s Singles; Open Women’s Singles; Open Men’s Doubles;

ELLEN CLARK FOUGHT FOR A CURE FOR THE DISEASE THAT KILLED HER AT 50
Ellen Clark's father, grandfather and great-grandfather died of a rare, hereditary,
genetic disease. She was diagnosed with the ailment five years ago, and her
two biological children have a 50 percent chance of developing the fatal disease.
The disease, which was discovered in St. Louis, is called cerebroretinal vasculopathy,
or CRV. It prevents new blood vessels from growing, as they would in a healthy
person. Ellen Clark died March 16 at her home in Richmond Heights. Mrs. Clark
helped raise $1 million for the Central Institute for the Deaf, her husband
said. She was born with a hearing disability. / St.

A non-tenure track Lecturer position in ASL will be available beginning in August, 2010. This is a 10 month appointment with the possibility for additional teaching in the summer.
Qualifications: Native or near-native competence in American Sign Language; Master's degree in teaching ASL, linguistics, or related field preferred but qualified individuals with a Bachelor's degree plus ASL teaching experience will be considered. Candidates should have expertise in Deaf culture and interpreting and must be able to work with Deaf and hearing students and faculty.
Responsibilities: Teach ASL courses ranging from introductory to advanced, develop course content and curriculum. The qualified applicant will be able to engage in the ASL program including external symposia and retreats. Participation in faculty service also is expected.

This position focuses on working with Visually Impaired and Deaf-Blind students who are in a behavioral health residential facility. This position also requires extensive knowledge of assessments and services in order to help the visually-impaired students maintain or improve their quality of life while they are in treatment and for transition.
