New York, NY
VATICAN DECLINED TO DEFROCK U.S. PRIEST WHO ABUSED BOYS
Top Vatican officials -- including the future Pope Benedict XVI -- did not defrock a priest who molested as many as 200 deaf boys, even though several American bishops repeatedly warned them that failure to act on the matter could embarrass the church, according to church files newly unearthed as part of a lawsuit. The internal correspondence from bishops in Wisconsin directly to Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, the future pope, shows that while church officials tussled over whether the priest should be dismissed, their highest priority was protecting the church from scandal. / The New York Times

Rome, Italy
POPE 'FAILED TO DISCIPLINE US PRIEST' WHO ABUSED DEAF CHILDREN
The Vatican last Thursday faced an allegation that the pope failed to take action against a dying US priest who admitted molesting deaf children. The claim, made by the New York Times, is the latest in a wave of child abuse scandals to hit the Catholic church and its leaders, and brings the storm closer to the pontiff himself. At the weekend he issued an unprecedented apology and an admission of institutional errors. / The Guardian

Milwaukee, WI
CRITICISM OF VATICAN IN WIS. OVER ABUSE SCANDAL
A man who says he was among some 200 deaf boys allegedly molested by a priest in Wisconsin said Monday the Vatican's defensive responses to revelations about the case make him feel like he did when he was 12, when no one would listen to him about the abuse. Arthur Budzinski, 61, said at a news conference outside the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist that Pope Benedict XVI is trying to protect himself against criticism of his handling of the Wisconsin case against the Rev. Lawrence Murphy. Murphy was accused of molesting some 200 boys at the St. John's School for the Deaf outside Milwaukee from 1950-1975. He never was defrocked. / Associated Press

Burleson, TX
FOR YEARS, DEAF BOYS TRIED TO TELL ABOUT THE ABUSE BY PRIESTS
They were deaf, but they were not silent. For decades, a group of men who were sexually abused as children by the Rev. Lawrence C. Murphy at a school for the deaf in Wisconsin reported to every type of official they could think of that he was a danger, according to the victims and church documents. They told other priests. They told three archbishops of Milwaukee. They told two police departments and the district attorney. They used sign language, written affidavits and graphic gestures to show what exactly Father Murphy had done to them. But their reports fell on the deaf ears of hearing people. / Black Christian News

St. Francis, WI
DEAF SCHOOL STUDENTS SAY WIS. PRIEST ABUSED THEM
Steven Geier says that four times in the mid-1960s, the Rev. Lawrence Murphy coaxed the then-14-year-old student into a closet at St. John's School for the Deaf just outside Milwaukee and molested him, using God to justify his actions. Geier said when he told Murphy what was happening was wrong, the priest replied, "Oh, yes. God sent me. This is confession." Geier, now 59 and living in Madison, was one of about 200 deaf boys at the school who say they were molested by the late priest decades ago in a case now creating a scandal for the Vatican and threatening to ensnare Pope Benedict XVI. / Washington Post

Atlanta, GA
MOST INTRIGUING PERSON, MARCH 26
61 years old, he embodies the "Never Give Up" philosophy. Finally, he says, people are learning about a long list of sexual abuses allegedly committed by a Catholic priest, including against him at age 12. He is Arthur Budzinski, he is deaf, and he is one of 200 people who claim his priest at a school for deaf boys molested him decades ago. He's never stopped fighting, and for that, he is most intriguing indeed. / Rick Sanchez CNN Blog

Rome, Italy
VATICAN SAY ABUSE RESPONSE CRUCIAL FOR CREDIBILITY
The Catholic Church's response to cases of sexual abuse by priests is crucial to its credibility and it must "acknowledge and make amends for" even decades-old cases, a Vatican spokesman said on Saturday. The church is reeling from a series of media reports this week that Pope Benedict, before being elected pontiff, may have looked the other way in the case of the abuse of hundreds of boys by a priest at an American school for the deaf. / Reuters

Rome, Italy
POPE WILL 'NOT BE INTIMIDATED BY PETTY GOSSIP' OVER SEX ABUSE SCANDALS
In a clear indication that the Vatican continues to insist the stream of abuse revelations are part of a conspiracy the Pope said: "From God comes the courage not to be intimidated by petty gossip." Although he did not directly mention the crisis that has seen claims of abuse from Ireland, Germany, Austria, Holland and Brazil the 82 year old Pontiff's message was evidently clear. / Telegraph

New York, NY
A NOPE FOR POPE
Yup, we need a Nope. A nun who is pope. The Catholic Church can never recover as long as its Holy Shepherd is seen as a black sheep in the ever-darkening sex abuse scandal. Now we learn the sickening news that Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, nicknamed “God’s Rottweiler” when he was the church’s enforcer on matters of faith and sin, ignored repeated warnings and looked away in the case of the Rev. Lawrence C. Murphy, a Wisconsin priest who molested as many as 200 deaf boys. / Maureen Dowd (The New York Times)

Washington, DC
THE SINS OF THE FATHERS ARE CRIMES
Q: Should Pope Benedict XVI be held responsible for the escalating scandals over clerical sexual abuse in Europe? Should he be investigated for cases of abuse that occurred under his watch as archbishop of Munich or as the Vatican's chief doctrinal enforcer? Should the pope resign? / On Faith Panelists Blog (The Washington Post)

STATE SUED FOR FAILING TO PROVIDE MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES FOR THE DEAF
While the state is focusing on repairing its damaged mental health system, the deaf who need those services have been totally shut out of getting any help, according to a federal lawsuit. The suit was brought by 25-year-old Gwinnett County woman and a 22-year-old Harris County man, but they ask the court to allow 350 other deaf people with mental be included in the complaint as a “class.” The federal lawsuit says the state has violated the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Equal Protection Clause of the U.S. Constitution because there is no system for matching those with mental disabilities with providers who are fluent in American Sign Language. / The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

DISCORD CLOUDS FUTURE OF AN AGENCY FOR THE DEAF
After 14 years of providing a lifeline to this community, the Center on Hearing and Deafness (CHAD) in West Chester is without a permanent director, and most of its staff has quit, putting its services on hold. Dissension surfaced in December with the exit of Bill Lockard, the cofounder and longtime executive director. It escalated with the January appointment of an interim director who cannot sign and had difficulty communicating with some staffers, half of whom are deaf. / Philadelphia Inquirer

S.D. LAWMAKERS UPHOLD DEAF EDUCATION BILL VETO
South Dakota lawmakers on Monday upheld Gov. Mike Rounds’ veto of a bill that would have required the state Education Department to set up programs to promote the education of children who are deaf or have impaired hearing. The Senate voted 30-4 to override the veto. But the measure failed on a 33-34 vote in the House, falling far short of the two-thirds, or 47 votes, needed to pass a bill over a governor’s objections. / Associated Press

FCC FOCUSED ON CLOSED CAPTIONING RULES
The FCC adopted rules mandating closed captioning of video programming in 1998, establishing benchmarks for a phase-in of captioning over the years that followed. The FCC is in the midst of an ongoing review of its closed captioning rules, now that more than a decade has passed since the rules were first adopted. Recently, the Commission revised the rules with an eye toward making them more consumer-friendly. / RTDNA

DEAF MAN TRYING TO CROSS STREET HIT BY CAR
A deaf man trying to cross North Broadway was struck by a vehicle today, March 30 near the Warren County Fairgrounds. Dianna Brown said her fiancee, Kenneth Martz, 31 was trying to cross the street around 3:20 p.m. when he was struck by a woman driving a Buick Park Avenue. Brown said Martz often attempts to cross the five-lane roadway to visit a store. / Middletown Journal

Castle Rock, WA
CAR PROWLERS' HAUL INCLUDES TODDLER'S TWO $1,700 HEARING AIDS
Car prowlers took more than backpacks and belongings in Castle Rock on Monday -- they stole a disabled girl's ability to hear. Inside a backpack in Shanna Blevins' car were the hearing aids for her 3-year-old daughter Emma. The toddler has several disabilities, including a seizure disorder, inability to eat without a feeding pump and problems seeing and hearing. The two hearing aids cost $1,700 each, and Emma relies on them to communicate and undergo developmental therapy, Blevins said. / The Daily News

Spartanburg, SC
ROCK HILL TEACHER HELPS SPRUCE UP SC SCHOOL FOR DEAF, BLIND
Years passed and chances of renovating a student dorm at the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind slimmed. It badly needed updating, but a shrinking budget forced the school to focus on more pressing needs. Revamping the building where 18 deaf girls live during the week fell farther down a priority list. Then Bryan Coburn stopped by. / The Herald
