SUIT
Olsten Staffing Services Corp., a nationwide temporary employment agency, will
pay $75,000 to settle a disability discrimination suit filed by the U.S. Equal
Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the agency announced last Thursday.
In its suit, the EEOC charged that Melville, N.Y.-based Olsten violated the
Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) by refusing to refer a deaf job applicant
for temporary employment as a production worker at Main Street Ingredients,
a La Crosse, Wis., food products manufacturer. / EEOC

The Justice Department last Thursday announced a settlement agreement under

in the provision of tax preparation services and courses. HRB is an H&R
Block Inc. franchisee with multiple offices. The settlement agreement requires,
among other things, that HRB furnish appropriate auxiliary aids and services,
including sign language interpreter services, when necessary to afford a person
who is deaf or hard of hearing equal access to the goods, services and accommodations

DISABLED MAN SUES MOBILE FOR BEING TASERED IN A STORE BATHROOM
A lawsuit against the city of Mobile and Dollar General was filed yesterday
on behalf of Antonio Love, a deaf and mentally disabled man whom Mobile police
forced from a store restroom using pepper spray and a Taser last year, his lawyer
said. On July 24, 2009, Love was inside a Dollar General store restroom, feeling
sick to his stomach, when police arrived in response to a call from a store
manager who thought Love was inside too long. / Press-Register

DEVICE FOR DEAF USED TO REPORT FAKE EMERGENCY
Investigators are searching for the person who reported a fake emergency to
911. The call put several agencies on alert. We’re told the 911 call came
from someone sending a message through a telecommunications device for the deaf

sister and was threatening to kill his mother-in-law and other relatives inside

MSD RAISES MONEY FOR DEAF STUDENTS IN HAITI
Keeping up with homework is hard enough. For students of the Institut Montfort,
a deaf school in Port-au-Prince, keeping up with homework is impossible. Their
school building collapsed during the Jan. 12 earthquake, said Sylvie Marc-Charles-Weir,
whose mother helped found the school in 1957. Concern for the education of Montfort's
600 students motivated parents and faculty at the Maryland School for the Deaf
to spearhead a fundraising drive. / The

DEAF EDUCATION TEACHER LET GO FROM PROGRAM
Last week the teacher of the deaf program housed in Mount Anthony Union Middle
School was dismissed from the school, leaving many questions in the minds of
supervisory union administrators and parents of students in the program. Kathy
Buck, director of Southwest Vermont Supervisory Union special education services,
said Ruthann Weaver was dismissed on March 18. Since deaf education services
are contracted by MAU and provided by Austine School in Brattleboro, MAU does
not control the program. The Austine School administration has not made public
the reason Weaver was removed, or told local supervisory union or school administration,
Buck said. / Bennington

Ponte Vedra High School junior Morgan McMahon dreams of a career as an interpreter

PRINCIPAL AT SCHOOL FOR DEAF OPPOSES PLAN TO MOVE ANOTHER SCHOOL INTO
BUILDING
Officials at Manhattan's only school devoted to deaf and hearing-impaired students
oppose a city plan to bring more children into their building in order to alleviate
school overcrowding across the borough. Watfa Shama, principal of the American
Sign Language and English Secondary School, said the Department of Education’s
proposal to move Chelsea’s Clinton School for Artists and Writers into
its already cramped building could compromise the children's education. / DNAinfo.com

NEW LOCATION OF SCHOOL FOR DEAF AND BLIND CHILDREN OPENS IN SALT LAKE
CITY
Students who attend Utah schools for the deaf and blind celebrate a new campus
location in Salt Lake City after years of planning and construction. Students,
teachers and administrators celebrated with a ribbon cutting last week. "This
has been a long time coming. I've been involved with trying to fund this school
and get it built for eight years," Gregg Buxton said. The students have
been moved eight times in the last ten years. "They really needed a home.
We've been moving them around because we've never had a permanent location,"

KSD CROSSING GUARD ENDURES WEATHER FOR THE KIDS SHE LOVES

Persons who are Deaf, Deafblind and hard of hearing are grossly underserved
by both the physical health and the behavioral health care system. In many cases,

SEE WHAT I'M SAYING: THE DEAF ENTERTAINERS DOCUMENTARY REVIEW
An outstanding documentary exploration of the travails of four deaf entertainers,
Hilari Scarl's "See What I'm Saying" provides a glimpse into a performance
circuit that few hearing-enabled Americans likely realize exists. Rather than
a disability, deafness begins to seem almost an entry fee into a singular subculture
with celebrities, traditions and prejudices all its own, and this community's
actors and artists face troubles that are both familiar and fascinatingly strange.

'FOUR DAYS IN MICHIGAN' -- NEW BOOK BY DEAF DOCTOR
On her deathbed, Sandra Winter calls her only son back home to tell him a secret,
a secret she kept even from her now deceased husband. The telling of the secret
by itself would be a remarkable tale. What makes the story one-of-a-kind is
that Sandra is Deaf. The Deaf community, even more isolated from hearing society
back in the 1940s, has its own culture, language and customs. The novel conveys
the richness of Deaf culture, weaving everyday Deaf experiences into the plot,
revealing unique ideas most hearing persons have no concept of, thus creating
situations that would never occur in an ordinary tale. / Durban

A BAD HAIR DAY SHOOTING CAN MAKE YOU DEAF AS A POST
One of the biggest secrets in the shooting sports is that it takes only a single
blast to damage your hearing permanently. Take the roar of a motorcycle

average gunshot, wrote Hearing Loss News and Reviews. It’s shocking, but
even experienced hunters deliberately leave their hearing protection at home
— believing they can hear their quarry better with the naked ear. / AmmoLand.com
