FORMER DEAF SCHOOL PRINCIPAL DENIES ALLEGATIONS OF A COVER UP
The former principal of the Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind denies
allegations he covered up sexual abuse at the school. Two sets of parents of
two blind students who are suing the school and its former leader claim five
children were sexually assaulted at the school by another student and the acts
were covered up. The assaults allegedly took place over a period of years begining
in 2009. / CBS

EEOC CLAIMS TOYS 'R' US DISCRIMINATED AGAINST DEAF JOB APPLICANT
The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission sued Toys "R" Us,
alleging the company broke the law when staff at its Columbia store refused
to provide a sign-language interpreter for a job applicant who is deaf. In October
2011, Shakirra Thomas applied for a "team member" position at Toys
"R" Us, and the store contacted her by phone to invite her to a group
interview that November. Her mother told the store that Thomas is deaf and requested
a sign-language interpreter for the interview. The store said Thomas could attend
the interview but would have to provide her own interpreter, the lawsuit says.

Marsha White, who has been deaf since birth, alleged that when she retained

she stressed the need to have an interpreter available during all phases of
the litigation. [Editor's Note: Unfortunately this article cannot be read without

DEAF CATTLE DOG RUBY HAS BEEN TRAINED AS AN ASSISTANCE DOG
Ruby is proof you can teach a deaf dog new tricks. The albino cattle dog-cross,
who is totally deaf, was rescued from a brutal life and retrained as a certified
public assistance dog. She is a constant companion for Stephen Woodhouse, an
army veteran with severe post-traumatic stress disorder, even waking him when
she senses he is having a nightmare. Disability Aid Dogs founder Alex Van Oeveren
said a Clever Paws dog trainer spent months retraining Ruby and teaching Mr
Woodhouse to communicate with her through sign language. / The

BLIND IN ONE EYE, PARTIALLY DEAF AND FACING MAJOR SPINAL SURGERY BUT
THALIDOMIDE MOTHER IS STILL FOUND FIT TO WORK
A Thalidomide victim who is blind in one eye, partially deaf and can barely
walk is being stripped of welfare payments - because officials say she is not
'disabled' enough to be out of work. Martine White, 50, was left severely disabled
after her mother took the anti-sickness drug while pregnant with her during
the 1960s. She can barely dress herself or even brush her hair, uses a wheelchair
and will undergo spinal surgery later this year. / Daily

REPORTER GOES 'DEAF FOR A DAY'
A regional daily reporter experienced what it was like to be deaf for a day
for a feature to raise awareness about hearing problems. Warren Manger, the
health reporter at the Coventry Telegraph, decided to discover what it was like
to be deaf after being contacted by the Coventry and Leamington Hearing Centre.
The experiment saw him have his ear canal flooded with a quick-setting solution
which meant that he could only hear muffled noises, as though his head was underwater.

SPOTLIGHT ON AIDS FOR DEAF CHILDREN
Students at City College Plymouth are more deaf aware thanks to a visit from
the National Deaf Children's Society. The college played host to the NDCS listening
bus and two of the roadshow team. The popular Listening Bus has been travelling

WRONG MEDICATIONS KILL PREGNANT DEAF PERSONS
The Ghana National Association of the Deaf (GNAD) has observed that the inability
of doctors and nurses to understand and interpret sign language was leading
to wrong prescriptions of medicines to deaf persons. The GNAD said the phenomenon
was leading to many deaf expectant mothers losing their lives while others were
disheartened and disappointed, given the unfair treatment meted out to deaf
persons visiting health centers across the country. / VibeGhana.com

MAN WHO ALLEGEDLY RAPED DEAF, MUTE AND BLIND SISTER FOUND DEAD IN LAKE
A man who is believed to have raped and impregnated his 13-year-old deaf, blind
and mute sister in Uganda has been found dead in a lake. Sanyu was attacked
in 2007 and she gave birth the following year. Because of her disability, she
was unable to identify her rapist so her mother called for DNA testing of her

DEAF FOODIES SAVOR GOURMET GHETTO TASTING TOUR IN SIGN LANGUAGE
My pair of professions straddles two worlds. By day, I work as an American Sign
Language (ASL) interpreter and otherwise, I’m a food writer. Although
these domains rarely intersect, it’s a thrill when they do. In 2011, I
broke the news of San Francisco’s first Deaf-owned restaurant, Mozzeria
and followed up last Spring with an interview of the owners in ASL. But there
are plenty of Deaf Bay Area food lovers who aren’t chefs, and I recently
took a dozen of them-software developers, college professors, actors and
retired folk-on an only-in-sign-language tasting tour of Berkeley’s
Gourmet Ghetto through Edible Excursions. / Bay

DEAF WOMAN WEEPS AT HEARING FAMILY FOR FIRST TIME
Born deaf, Amy Barber and her family were told she wouldn't be able to restore
her hearing through medical procedures due to her neurological hearing loss.
But as an adult, Barber decided she wanted to try a cochlear implant, after
seeing videos of other people finding success with the electronic devices that
are surgically installed. In an emotional YouTube video going viral this week,
the 26-year-old Barber can be seen hearing the voices of her parents and her
6-year-old son, Blake, for the first time. / TODAY

'SWITCHED AT BIRTH' CAST VISITS SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF
Stars including deaf actress Marlee Matlin and Gilles Marini chatted with students
at the school for deaf youngsters, the only educational facility that primarily
teaches students who are deaf or hard of hearing in the area. The school is
close to the show's heart as executive producer Lizzy Weiss toured the campus
for inspiration while creating the series, set at a school named Carlton. The
show, which stars both hearing, hard of hearing and deaf actors, made history
earlier this month when it becomes the first-ever drama to air an episode entirely
