Thanks to email, I've gotten an eyeful from supporters of the Indiana School for the Deaf as legislation to remove a key function from that institution has progressed to passage. "Their outreach program is a successful model of meeting the needs of every Deaf child in the state," Gary Fitts wrote. His use of the capital D speaks volumes. The pride of the deaf community, identified by its use of American Sign Language, is very much at stake in the battle over outreach and intervention services, which the Deaf School will lose under House Bill 1367, passed last week. / Indianapolis Star

JUDGE: DEPUTIES DID NOT VIOLATE DEAF MAN'S RIGHTS
A federal appeals court rejected a deaf Middletown man’s complaint that deputies with the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office didn’t do enough to accommodate his disability while responding to his home. In January 2008, sheriff’s deputies responded to Robert Seremeth’s home for a reported domestic incident. In its decision Monday, the U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that sheriff’s deputies were justified in handcuffing Seremeth’s hands behind his back -- leaving him unable to communicate through sign language or by writing notes to the officers. / Gazette.net

NEW SCHOOL FOR DEAF FACES NEIGHBORHOOD OPPOSITION
No one denies that the Rocky Mountain Deaf School desperately needs a new home. The highly regarded school currently rents space in a Golden strip mall that's also home to a bar and a hookah bar. After years of trying, the school has won a $13 million grant from the Colorado Department of Education to build a new prekindergarten through 12th-grade school in Lakewood's Hutchinson Park area. But, like many construction projects, the proposed school has run into conflict. / KMGH Denver

LEGISLATURE PASSES BILL GIVING FLORIDA SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF AND THE BLIND EMINENT DOMAIN
With just hours left in the state’s 60-day legislative session, the Legislature passed a bill giving Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind eminent domain powers. The St. Augustine school is the only public education entity, which includes school districts, colleges, and universities, that does not have the power. With no debate, the Senate passed the legislation on a unanimous vote at 10 p.m. It now heads to Gov. Rick Scott. / The Florida Times-Union

James Alzate-Medina’s first day of school was bewildering. Teachers and students at the Horace Mann School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing sat together in circles, waving their hands in the air like frenzied birds. Alzate-Medina, now 22, is one of a handful of students to have graduated from a two-year-old program at the Horace Mann School, one of the first in the country to target deaf teenagers who immigrate to the United States. / The Boston Globe

TRUCK STRIKES, KILLS DEAF CHILD, 3, ON BURKE ROAD
A 3-year-old deaf child died this morning after she ran into the highway in Burke County. According to the Georgia State Patrol Sgt. 1st Class Chris Lacienski, the child was playing about 9:30 a.m. with another child in her front yard when she darted across the 400 block of Georgia Highway 56 North near the Church of God. The child was returning across the highway when she was struck by a log truck. The child died at the scene. / The Augusta Chronicle

DEAF STUDENT A VICTIM OF SEXUAL BULLYING, POLICE SAY
Two police agencies are investigating two South San Antonio High School students on allegations of bullying and sexual assault on a 15-year-old deaf girl. One of the students, 18-year-old Javier Maya, was arrested and charged with public lewdness on Tuesday. According to an arrest warrant, Maya in October 2011 had persuaded another deaf student into groping the victim to the point of pain. The suspects then allegedly threatened the girl not to tell anyone what happened. / kens5.com

Deaf MP Mojo Mathers has been granted funding for support in the House to be paid by Parliamentary Services. Speaker Lockwood Smith this morning announced he had directed Parliamentary Services, which funds support for all MPs to do their jobs, to provide the legal authority to fund electronic note-takers for Mathers. "This support will be in addition to that to which she is already entitled, to ensure she may fulfil her role as a member of Parliament," Smith said. / Stuff.co.nz

FRESH PROBE INTO DEAF AND DUMB YOUTH'S DEATH
Jharkhand government on Monday announced a fresh probe into the death of a deaf and dumb youth, whose body was recently exhumed for post-mortem following allegations that he died in police firing during an anti-naxal operation in Latehar district on January 31. COMPUTER TURNS SIGN LANGUAGE INTO TEXT, CREATING NEW WORLD FOR DEAF TRAINEES
A computer program that translates sign language into written text could revolutionise the lives of the deaf and hard of hearing, scientists say. The software, which can be used on portable devices and provides near instantaneous translation, would be the first of its kind. Researchers at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland hope the move will help young deaf people find work and communicate with colleagues. / The Age

VICTORY IN FIGHT TO SAVE BRISTOL SCHOOL FOR DEAF CHILDREN
Campaigners in Bristol have succeeded in their battle to save Elmfield School for Deaf Children. The school has been under threat for more than a year because of the high cost of each pupil place. But parents, staff, governors and supporters strongly opposed Bristol City Council's move to shut it and replace it with specialist resource bases attached to mainstream schools. Today the council has announced the school will stay open, although its maximum number of places will be cut from 36 to 30. / This is Bristol

Two of Sarah Colbeck’s children attend Sir James Whitney School for the Deaf and her other two will enroll in the provincial school when they are of age. However, the family’s confidence that the children will receive an education among other deaf children was shaken in recent weeks when the provincial government released the Drummond Report, a massive study examining options to reduce government spending. It's all much to the surprise of their coach, who was floored when he realized how competitive his players are. B.C.'s deaf community is rallying against the cancellation of a high-tech pilot program that gives them the ability to make video calls with a live translator. As technology rockets forward with tools like Facetime and Skype, deaf British Columbians feel they are being asked to go backwards with the end of the Video Relay Service. / CTV

TROOPS OCCUPYING 4 KANALS OF SCHOOL FOR DEAF AND DUMB
For more than 20 years, four kanals of land owned by Abhinanda Home, Valley’s sole school for deaf and dumb children, has been under the occupation of security forces. In total, Abhinanda Home is spread over 10 kanals of land. However, the remaining six kanals of land are not being properly utilised. The play ground has no required facilities for sports and other activities. No improvement has been made in the infrastructure of the school. / KashmirWatch

Lee Calvaruso was sound asleep in his Buffalo, NY apartment when there was an explosion and fire. Despite the commotion, Calvaruso didn't hear a thing because he's deaf. "I didn't realize it because I was asleep," he said through his translator. "Everybody got out of the building, but the landlord forgot to get me." If a firefighter hadn't been able to make it to his apartment within minutes, Calvaruso could've certainly died. When the parents of a Purdue hurdler found out their son was deaf at a young age, they didn’t know the devastating diagnosis would morph into a blessing. Josh Hembrough, a senior in the College of Health and Human Sciences, was walking at 10 months old but still couldn’t form words. When his parents took him to an audiologist, they were told their son was profoundly deaf in both ears. Job Description:
This position provides culturally affirmative mental health services to D/HH adults coping with mental health issues. The main responsibility of the Mental Health Specialist is to provide psychotherapy/ counseling services and the remaining of time will include clinical case management/coordination, consultation, training, aftercare planning, and community placement assistance for D/HH adults.

Minimum Qualifications:
Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL)
At least 2 years advanced profession experience, OR 1 year advanced professional experience plus 2 years professional experience providing direct mental health services to D/HH individuals.
Master's Degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work or behavioral-health related field
Licensed or license-eligible for LPC, LPCC, LP, LICSW or LMFT in the state of Minnesota
