SCHOOL OFFICIAL RECALLS HARROWING DRIVE TO RESCUE FOUR DEAF STUDENTS
They were stuck and someone had to go get them. Four Dalton Public Schools students who are deaf — Raymond Bravo, Diego Olvera, Raul Real and Jenelle Serrano — attend special education classes contracted through Gordon County Schools. Most school days, they make the trip to and from Calhoun without any issues. But on Tuesday, Jan. 21, as a winter storm started, the students were stuck miles from home. So BeLinda Parrish, director of transportation for the Dalton schools, took it upon herself to go get the kids in her truck, hoping its four-wheel drive would keep her on the road. / Dalton Daily Citizen

ONLINE PREACHER FOR THE DEAF COMES OUT AS ATHEIST
Justin Vollmar, a pastor who has been running the Virtual Deaf Church online for the last four years, made a shocking announcement to his followers Friday, declaring he has become an atheist because there is "NO GOD" and Christianity is "all nonsense." Vollmar explained his decision in a blunt and blasphemous YouTube video Friday. "This may shock you completely," signed Vollmar in the run-up to his revelation made through subtitles. "Yes, I have become an atheist." / Christian Post

MEDFORD CARE CENTER AGREES TO PROVIDE ASSISTANCE TO HEARING IMPAIRED FOLLOWING SETTLEMENT
A privately-run nursing and rehabilitation facility must provide a sign-language interpreter for the deaf and the hearing impaired as the result of a discrimination lawsuit, Acting Attorney General John J. Hoffman announced on Monday. The agreement is part of a settlement that resolves a lawsuit filed by the family of a deaf patient, Mary Jane Barton, against the Medford Care Center in 2012. Barton’s family claimed Medford Care Center continually failed to [provide] a sign language interpreter for her outside of two conferences with physicians during a six-month stay in 2012. / Patch.com

NANCY: 'DUNN HALF DEAF, YET HEARS THREAT ON LIFE?!'
Michael Dunn took the stand in his own defense Tuesday, telling the jury he shot and killed 17-year-old Jordan Davis in self-defense. Dunn told the jury that he lost hearing in his right ear from scuba diving when he was younger. “So he’s trying to tell this jury that with his windows up that he could hear a kid in another car threaten to kill him, and he’s half deaf?” asked Nancy Grace. / Nancy Grace

Westerville, OH
DEAF ELDERLY WOMEN TARGETED IN LOTTERY SCAM
Police say an elderly deaf woman helped swindle thousands of dollars from women with the same disability. Westerville police believe the lottery scheme has been going on for more than two years over video phone. Detective Ted Smith tells ABC6/FOX28 he got a call from a detective in North Carolina last April about a woman living in a deaf community in Westerville. Smith says the people behind the 700K Deaf Awareness Lottery took advantage of her inability to hear. She's accused of using sign language to tell other deaf women, including an acquaintance, they've won $700,000 but first have to wire their own money for taxes and fees. / WSYX

COMPOSER DUBBED 'JAPAN'S BEETHOVEN' ADMITS HE CAN HEAR
A man dubbed “Japan’s Beethoven”, who admitted someone else wrote his music and came under fire when his ghost composer claimed he could hear perfectly well, apologized on Wednesday, but insisted he used to be deaf. Mamoru Samuragochi said his impairment had improved in recent times but that when he had first paid part-time music school teacher Takashi Niigaki to pen works in his name, he had been unable to hear. “I feel deeply ashamed of myself for living a false life,” Samuragochi said in a statement. / South China Morning Post

DEAF CAN: DO SELLS SOUTH TCE PROPERTY FOR RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT
The fight to save the city base of Adelaide’s deaf community has ended with the sale of the South Tce property for a residential development. Deaf Can: Do has sold the property to an unnamed development consortium, who plan to demolish the modern hostel wing and Adelaide Deaf Club addition to the 86-year-old heritage building to make way for an apartment complex. Plans for the sale caused protests and deep resentment last year from deaf community members, who argued they were being unfairly punished for Deaf Can: Do’s financial woes, while the organization said the cost of maintaining the old building was crippling. / Herald Sun

OTTAWA MAN CHALLENGING CONTROVERSIAL NEW VICTIM FINE SURCHAGE
Tim McCooeye is poor, drug-addicted and sometimes holds a sign warning of the zombie apocalypse. The 51-year-old panhandler may also be the person to bring down the Conservative government’s controversial mandatory victim fine surcharge. On Wednesday, McCooeye and his lawyer filed what is believed to be the first serious constitutional challenge to a law that would levy a victim surcharge that McCooeye says he can’t afford to pay. NINA RAINE'S 'TRIBES' GETS TONE DEAF PRODUCTION
Nina Raine’s Tribes has been acclaimed and showered with awards in London as well as New York and it’s not hard to see why. It tells the story of Billy, deaf since birth, whose family have shunned such usual communication tools as signing and instead treat him as though he can hear, just not very well. The resulting clash of cultures, perceptions and emotions is highly dramatic, deeply touching and profoundly thought-provoking. Or it would be in a decent production. The one now on view through the combined auspices of Theatrefront, Canadian Stage and Theatre Aquarius is, not to mince words, an almost total mess. / Toronto Star

WHY SCOTLAND BECOMING INDEPENDENT WOULD BE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THE SCOTTISH DEAF COMMUNITY
I am a supporter of Scotland becoming independent for many reasons. Here, I will write about what I believe are the major plus points. I will also outline briefly why I think that Scotland becoming independent is one of the best opportunities that the Scottish Deaf Community is ever going to have. Looking enviously at model countries such as Finland and Norway, for me, this is a great opportunity for a modern Scotland with a fairer traditional attitude to make deaf people’s lives more positive. / The Limping Chicken

SOMEWHAT DEAF AND COMPLETELY SCARED
I was born with nerve deafness in both ears. My left ear is much worse than my right, but neither are very good at picking up basic sounds. When I was a young boy, my mother would get mad at me because she thought I was just ignoring her. I'd be nestled in front of the TV and she'd ask me something from the kitchen. When I didn't reply, she'd say it louder, which of course I didn't hear. Exasperated, she'd come to the doorway of the living room and ask rather loudly why I didn't respond, and I'd tell her that I didn't hear her. Naturally she just assumed I was simply not paying attention like most kids, but that was not at all the case. / The Huffington Post
