CHARGES DROPPED IN ALLEGED SAN BENITO CO. RAPE
A man accused of raping a deaf and mute woman is walking free after a judge ruled there isn't enough evidence to hold him. Roberto Cavillo, 36, who is accused of holding and raping a deaf and mute woman inside his Aromas trailer over a period of several days in August, walked out of the San Benito County Jail on Monday. "He belongs in prison. I hate to say this word: dead, gas chamber -- whatever they do nowadays, because that's horrible. Especially to a woman like that," Beatrice Angulo said when she heard about the crime. / KSBW

DEAF MAN SAVES WOMAN FROM BURNING APARTMENT
A deaf neighbor saved a woman from a burning apartment at about 6:30 a.m. Monday in the 1100 block of Red Bluff. Residents of the complex said one of the buildings caught fire, and it spread quickly. A woman was trying to escape her apartment when the flames blocked the stairs and she became trapped on a second-story balcony. That’s when neighbors said Darell McCollough, a deaf man who lives across the parking lot from the burning building, sprung into action. / KVUE

Moreover, he fears pending changes in health care may further snarl what future he has left. / The Spokesman

JUDGE FIRM ON SENTENCE FOR NEGLECT
Jeanne Peterson and her husband, Buel "Chuck" Peterson, both told Superior Court Judge Carlisle Overstreet they did not notice that 30-year-old Christina Baxter -- their deaf, blind relative -- was losing weight during the several years she was in their care. Judge Overstreet, however, rejected the claim, asking the couple why they had not taken Ms. Baxter, who was on Medicaid, to a doctor. In October 2007, emergency workers found Ms. Baxter dead in her front yard from severe malnourishment. / Augusta Chronicle

Spartanburg, SC

Authorities accuse a South Carolina man of letting a pit bull and five puppies starve and freeze to death in his backyard, according to the Charlotte Observer. Multiple media outlets report Friday that 28-year-old Anthony Murphy of Spartanburg faces multiple charges, including unlicensed animal breeding, inhumane treatment of animals, and failure to dispose of dead animal bodies. Murphy, who is deaf, told police through an interpreter the dogs were fine when he returned home from a trip Sunday night, but they were dead Monday when he went to feed them. / USA Today

BOARD APPROVES SCHOOL OF DEAF REORGANIZATION

I HOPE THEY SERVE BEER IN HELL: REVIEW OF THE DVD VIDEO
The big screen version of I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell is, we are to assume, one of author Tucker Max's supposed adventures. When the movie begins, Tucker (played by Matt Czurchy) is screwing a woman from behind. The cops bust in, thinking she's being raped. As it turns out, she's deaf, and quite enjoying herself. She lets the cops know this in one of those stereotypical deaf person voices -- and we're off and running. / DVD Talk

DESPITE ILLNESS AND TRAGEDY, COOK GETTING GALLAUDET BACK ON TRACK
"Do you know what you're getting yourself into?" A friend posed the question in September 2007, when Kevin Cook accepted the head-coaching job at Gallaudet (D.C.) University. A man of diverse basketball experience, Cook thought he was ready for the challenge of coaching a struggling Division III women's basketball team at the world's only all-deaf college. But when only seven players showed up at the first practice with a coach who didn't yet know sign language, Cook realized he still had a long road to travel. / ESPN
