MORRIS BRODERSON, RENOWNED DEAF ARTIST, DIES AT 82
Renowned Los Angeles artist, Morris Broderson, 82, passed away on January 4, 2011. Born deaf, Broderson’s talent was discovered at age fourteen by his beloved aunt, Joan Ankrum, in whose gallery Broderson built an impressive career that spanned sixty years. His exquisite water colors and oil paintings are in hundreds of private collections worldwide. Morris Broderson is survived by his cousins, David and Barbara Ankrum and their children, Challee and Brian, his dearest friend, Bernard Bragg, and his niece, Paula Easton, who will greatly miss his sweet and gentle spirit.

DEFENDANT WITH NO LANGUAGE PROVES DIFFICULT TO PROSECUTE
With a flick of his wrist, the interpreter at the front of the courtroom mimed the bang of a judge's gavel, his other hand pointing to the ceiling. The crude gestures were meant to convey that the case against Juan Jose Gonzalez Luna would be heard in a higher-level court. Gonzalez's face, however, remained vacant. Did the 42-year-old -- who is deaf, mute, and illiterate, including no known knowledge of sign language -- understand what had just happened? / The Philadelphia Inquirer

NAD FILES SUIT ON BEHALF OF DEAF BOY SCOUT
The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) and the law firm of Chason, Rosner, Leary & Marshall L.L.C., filed a complaint in federal court against the National Capital Area Council, Boy Scouts of America (NCAC), alleging that the NCAC has failed to ensure effective communication for one of its troop members, Wolfgang Staley, who is deaf. Despite requests by the boy’s mother, Cindy Officer, the NCAC has refused to provide ASL interpreters at troop meetings and at their monthly outgoings. / NAD

DEAF PRISONER FROM DISTRICT FILES RIGHTS VIOLATION LAWSUIT
A federal inmate from the District who is deaf has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Bureau of Prisons, saying that the agency has jeopardized his safety and violated his rights by failing to provide him with communications aids that he needs. David Bryant, who is serving a 99-year sentence for rape, says he was punished by staff for ignoring instructions that he couldn't hear and that he was attacked by other inmates when he tried to activate the closed-captioning function on a communal television. / The Washington Post

COPS: DEAF MEN CAUGHT RED-HANDED IN A/C HEIST
Two deaf men were caught last Wednesday morning when they tried to strip the air-conditioning units at a Rockledge warehouse off Murrell Road, police said. A tip led investigators to the suspects. Police said they caught them red-headed trying to steal thousands of dollars worth of copper wire from the units. The warehouse owner, Jim Swann, spoke with WFTV and said he will never forget the incident. "These guys took it very seriously," Swann said. / WFTV

AUSTIN COMMUNITY COLLEGE HOSTING UNIVERSITY FOR THE DEAF
The Austin Community College District was picked to serve as a regional center for Gallaudet University, a school that caters to the deaf and hard of hearing. The Gallaudet University Southwest Regional Center opens today in ACC’s Riverside Campus. “This partnership will be an incredible resource for deaf and hard of hearing people and all others connected to the deaf community,” said Lyman Grant, dean of Arts and Humanities for ACC. / Austin Business Journal

SCHOOL FOR DEAF TACKLES BULLYING
When a deaf student bullies another using sign language, one insult hits deepest: the one meaning “you’re worthless, you’re nothing.” Teachers at the Mill Neck Manor School for the Deaf in Nassau County, N.Y., know to look out for it. Last year, they began to notice students reacting oddly to the sign for tiger -- a sweeping gesture of the fingers from nose to forehead. Students looked hurt as if they’d been told they were worthless. In fact, they had -- the sign for tiger had become the code word for the insult. / Newsday

As Gov. Dannel P. Malloy closed the week with an open house at the Capitol Saturday, he said he was inspired by a text message from a deaf couple. “Congrats,” Jim and Susan Pederson of West Hartford wrote to Malloy and Lt. STATE STILL SPRUCING UP GEORGIA SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF
Nearly three years worth of renovations at the state-run Georgia School for the Deaf to the tune of about $5.5 million are nearing completion in Cave Spring, but some work still continues. “We have done HVAC and re-roofing work, replaced flooring and ceilings, improved lighting, demolished the old Cub Land building -- which had become a hazard -- infrastructure and fire alarm improvements, installed an entrance gate, built a new gym, and replaced windows,” said Matt Cardoza, director of communications for the Georgia Department of Education. / Rome News-Tribune

ROOMMATE ARRESTED IN SLAYING OF LAY MINISTER
Police have arrested the deaf roommate of a slain Chilliwack church official, but no charges have yet been laid in the death. The body of Robert-Jan (Robbie) Planje, 64, was found two weeks ago on a forest service road near Hope by a man walking his dog. The lay minister at Chilliwack United Church had not been seen since Dec. 12. Officers searched his home after his disappearance and found signs of an altercation. / Victoria Times Colonist

DEAF CAMP HEARING SET FOR MARCH
Discord between residents and a local camp for deaf children in Seguin Township has taken to the courts.
In 2010, residents hired a lawyer, Eric Gillespie, to charge the Ontario Mission for the Deaf -- which operates the Ontario Camp of the Deaf (OCD), a summer camp that hosts motocross events -- for allegedly exceeding provincial noise regulations during a motocross on September 19. / CottageCountryNow.ca

A week before the anniversary of the earthquake that devastated Haiti, the Red Cross fulfilled its promise to provide shelter those left homeless on January 12th to some very special people. “Deaf Camp,” a sector of La Piste, one of Haiti’s largest tent villages, is home to a group of audio-deficient residents. Liam Rowe is an international rugby player -- but he hasn’t told his teammates at Wyeside, writes Ian Morgan. RNID SURVEY FINDS SHOP HEARING LOOPS 'NOT USABLE'
A quarter of shops and businesses in Scotland which display signs claiming to have hearing loops do not have a usuable system, according to a study. A survey by the Royal National Institute for the Deaf (RNID) sent mystery shoppers to 500 shops in Dundee, Glasgow, Paisley and Falkirk. Some 132 shops displayed a loop sign but in 32 cases they were not working or staff did not know how to use them. / BBC News

LURNEA'S ONITA THORNTON, 95, IS OLDEST SURVIVING STUDENT
When Onita Thornton, 95, was a schoolgirl, it was rare for hearing-impaired students to make it past year 10. Deaf students weren’t allowed to sit the Higher School Certificate until the 1980s and many weren’t required to go to school at all. Mrs Thornton, of Lurnea, was the oldest surviving student at the recent 150th anniversary of the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children (RIDBC). / Liverpool Leader

Nichols said the need to teach sign language in Craig is greater than most people believe. “There are more deaf (people) than we think in this town,” Nichols said. A Saint James sophomore’s passion for sports overwhelms any obstacle life has thrown at him. Josh Waggoner works as hard as any other kid in coach Matthew Anderson’s wrestling room. Director of Client Support Services
Full-time * Exempt * San Leandro, CA

This position directs and supervises all aspects of Client Support Services (CSS) offices as well as specialized programs. Represents the agency in educational and advocacy contexts; coordinates program development and evaluation, and monitors department budget. This position reports to the Executive Director.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
-- Coordinate and implement staffing and programs in the San Leandro, Fremont, San Jose, and Fremont Oak Gardens (FOG) Client Support Services offices
-- Provide training and supervision to all Client Support Specialists, Program Developer, and contractors (for ASL classes and computer classes)
-- Develop linkages and working relationships with other agencies serving the deaf and hard of hearing community
-- Implement grant research and grant writing priorities to sustain the programs within the agency
-- Oversee the compliance of contracts that fund programs within the agency
-- Conduct evaluations of programs to ensure that services are meeting the current needs in the community
-- Monitor department budget
-- Facilitate regularly scheduled department meetings
-- Participate in management team meetings to support department as well as agency operations
-- Represent DCARA and/or the deaf and hard of hearing community at meetings and community events

REQUIRED SKILLS:
-- Bachelor’s degree in counseling, social services, deafness, or related areas. MA degree preferred.

-- Demonstrated organizational, analytical, and writing skills
-- Demonstrated ability to work well with others and to initiate projects independently
-- Knowledge of MS windows software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)

DCARA has a full-time job opening for the position of Director of Employment Services. This position has two major responsibilities: 1. Manage the Employment Services Department which is charged with the task of working with Deaf and hard of hearing residents of the San Francisco Bay Area to enhance their vocational skills, increase their employability, place them in jobs, and work with them to retain their employment; and 2. Develop and implement the Deaf Employment Training Center, a pre-employment skills training and development program for Deaf and hard of hearing individuals. This position will report to the Executive Director and will occupy an office at the Fremont EDD office (primarily) and at DCARA Headquarters in San Leandro.

Summary: The National Account Manager will be responsible for introducing CSDVRS to new business customers, while also strengthening CSDVRS' relationship with current business customers. Responsible for sharing new exciting products and features with customers who desire to use video relay service in their place of employment by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate supervisors.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
* Plans and directs sales and service programs to promote new markets, improve competitive position in area, and provide fast and efficient customer service.
* Primary POC for Business users in assigned region.
* Prospect assigned region for new customers.
* Suggesting and implementing creative and practical methods for selling CSDVRS, strengthening client relationships, and increasing visibility.
* Coordinating aspects of CSDVRS marketing efforts.
* Work with other Regional Account Managers to plan and implement state and region-wide events and promotions.
* Coordinate referrals of installations of CSDVRS equipment in homes, agencies, and/or businesses through our installation program; Confers with potential customer to ascertain equipment, supplies, and service needs.
* Work closely with local interpreting agencies.
* Communicate with and submit regular activity reports to the General Manager of BVS.
* Perform additional sales related responsibilities and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
* Must have strong knowledge of Telecommunications Relay Service Industry.
* Must have excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work successfully with a variety of people.
* Must have the ability to communicate fluently in American Sign Language
* Must have a good understanding of Deaf Culture.
* Must have strong written and verbal communication skills.
* Must have extensive customer service experience.
* Must be willing to work a variety of hours and to travel frequently.
* Must have knowledge of Video applications.

Requirements:

Education and/or Experience:
* 1-2 years of sales experience preferred.
* Bachelor's Degree in related field strongly preferred.
